I found some points to be important in using colored pencils as one who uses them all the time. Using some odorless mineral spirits would smooth out the granular appearance. Certainly one can use gesso or Art Spectrum multimedia and pastel primer mixed with a bit of gesso to let the pencils smooth themselves out. I am able to do larger format because the oms takes that waxy look away and gives it a painterly look. All of those lights are needed as you said. The music distracted me, it’s perfectly fine just to leave it out. If using primer or gesso then one would want it to thoroughly dry even overnight would be better. Thank you and enjoy your drawing. Another help is using pastels in the background and a very light spray of Degas Spectrafix for a fixative or the final fixative of Spectrafix in a very very fine mist bottle then everything else can be done in colored pencils. There are many ways to blur the background and emphasize the foreground so that the pencils can be used when necessary. Rembrandt has a 60 half stick selection that is archival and mixes together well. I use about four brands pencils of artist grade that have lasted and waiting for sales matters likewise. One certainly doesn’t need all the pencils but using a brand like Polychromos plus 10. -15 of each professional brand that would help without costing so much.😊
