    Wow so much to learn about colored pencil colors. I use to use Oil paint as a medium. I was awesome at mixing colors to get the color i wanted. But now moving over to colored pencils i have to learn all over again. Thanks for the advice and sharing your talents on youtube.

    This is the 1st video of yours I’ve seen. It was a no-brainer to subscribe because your teaching method is so clear & easy to understand. Due to Covid & life circumstances I stopped drawing for about 3 years. I’m starting again now & trying to get back to my first love, coloured pencil. I was looking for motivation & inspiration. You have provided that and I look forward to watching many more of your videos. Thank you for sharing your skill and knowledge.

    I actually made the effort and watched the video VERY OFTEN to really find (almost) all the colored pencils in the right order. Should I write the names of the colors and their brand in a comment so you can mark it afterwards? So that the followers of your channel who are interested don't have to do this extra work and can easily read the colors and order of the colored pencils here? Of course, I completely understand you and the decision is of course only in your hands - but there are some KZreadrs who do tutorials in such a way that, for example, they always show the name or at least the number of the pen in the top corner of the video - or also in the video description. And I personally, but I think many others too, love that! Because then you have the CHOICE - you don't have to do it like the KZreadr, but if you want the picture to look the same or if you still feel a little unsure about the color choice, you CAN. However, if you decide to do something different with your videos, then I would wholeheartedly ask for something if it were possible. Because I love your tutorials and am a big fan of your art and color choices and regularly draw tutorials from you. It would be great if you could hold each pen in your hand for at least a second while drawing so that you can see the color name in the video! (-that's how I managed to assign all the pens in this tutorial - well, except for two, for which it was unfortunately simply impossible to read the color name) Because even if you do NOT have the pen of this brand and color at home, it is so much easier to choose a suitable color for YOUR pens! (-please excuse the long message!)

    I have an important question cause I am drawing this rose bud at the moment and I have the same derwent lightfast set like you, but I dont understand how your color system works? How am I able to know which color you are using? Cause I didnt find any color names in the video or the video describtion or anywhere else- like for example ,,cinammon" or ,,dusty pink" or how the all are named 😅 And what does that number mean? For example, the first color you chose is number one- what does that mean? 😅 I am sorry for pestering you with so many questions, but I really want to use the right colors 😊

    Hello, I usually don’t post the colour name because many people won’t have that brand of pencils and the videos aren’t meant to be about exact colour replication of the work. You can get the colour swatches on my website, and compare as close as possible, link is in the description box . In reference to the numbers, as mentioned in video, they are the pressure number. Link to the pressure 60 second video is in the description box as well. Cheers

    Thank you for your amazing videos. I am trying to figure out which pencils to go for. I currently have a set of Derwent Procolour and Derwent Drawing pencils, but layering it seems to get waxy, not an effect I am too keen on. I was wondering whether the Faber Castell Polychromos or Derwent Lightfast pencils would be better for layering? I am looking to use them for drawing fluffy and feathered animals mostly. As the sets are quite expensive, I thought to ask for advice before purchasing more pencils.

    Hi, thanks for the comment. That’s a tough one, the Polychromos and Lightfast are both great pencils and layering is excellent. The Polychromos has a larger colour selection at 120 and their colours range has more saturated colours, while the Lightfast offer more muted colours with a higher lightfast rating at a higher price with smaller number 100. My go to pencil as a general pencil is the Polychromos, they are oil based, as the Lightfast, they have a slightly harder lead and hold a point longer making them great for fur and feathers. I would start with the Polychromos and then add to your stock with the Lightfast even getting 5 or so pencils at a time. Cheers

    @jeannettesirois thanks ever so much for your advice! :) I will have a hunt around for Polychromos pencils at a good price! I found a box of 120 for £170 It sounds like a reasonable price for so many colours. 😂 probably more than I will need to start with, but I do like having a good colour variation to choose from 😀 I am looking forward to being able to follow on with your videos! Big thanks! 😀

    Awesome explanation of layering, why straight up black can look flat, superb! Do you prefer to use Stonehenge wc paper when you use wc for some of those layers or do you prefer to use a different brand? I have used both hp and cp with it turning out fine with the blends. Some have said that when they try Fabriano Artistico ( Kilimanjaro is the same paper and mill) that they get repetitive little marks from the process. Maybe my eyes don’t notice it but I was curious as to if you switch with wc and then layering or mixing anyways. I use Arches and Saunders Waterford too. The Lightfast pencils lay very quickly and are so smooth and blend with so many brands. Really great explanations and example. Great timing as I am finishing some leaves and blurred foliage and blurred background flowers. Thank you😊

    Thanks for the comment. I stick to the Stonehenge White for and also use Fabriano Artistico quite a bit, Arches is a very nice paper for coloured pencils but I have found the Saunders Waterford is not a surface I am found of for what I do. The Lightfast are a good pencil and for sure work well with other blends as you mention. Glad this has helped, cheers

    Great advice. how do you like the Derwent lightrast pencils?

  • @Drawingwithcolour

    @Drawingwithcolour

    Thank you. As for the pencils, they’re good, I like the feel, good colour laydown with a strong pigment, the only thing is that I work with highly saturated colours, especially in the pinks and reds and I find that it is lacking in that department. Their range seems more muted, which is excellent for skin tones, doing white subjects, and darker shadows. How about you? Cheers

    @jeannettesirois I have never had much joy using Derwent pencils except for the drawing pencils, and the inktense I do like the color soft mostly I use prismacolor, polychromos or caran d'ache.
