Drawabox 📦 Review

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this video, I give a full overview of my experience with the drawabox course. I started drawabox.com in September of 2019 and completed the course on August of 2021. But that timeline will vary for most people. It isn't a race, it's a marathon.
My old drawabox.com profile can be found here: drawabox.com/community/sketch...
I hope this helps you an encourages you to try drawabox. It helped me learn a lot of fundamentals, although I still have a lot to learn.

OH LARS! I went through DAB shortly after/ about the same time as you (I started later and caught up at lesson 6 or 7) and I remember looking at your homework and feedback and learning from it. Thank you for sharing your thoughts about the experience. Your treasure chest submission in particular was one I looked at a lot, because there are so few student submissions for it. I agree so much that taking the time to critique other students helps you AND the student, it works well. You're not the only one to go through revision hell in lesson 5, it is a toughie. For ellipse guides instead of a full set there are "master" ellipse guides which have a bunch of different degrees on a single sheet, they're cheap, but tiny. I understand the frustration of not having the ellipse you want, I remember the pain. Interesting that you fount the wheel challenge painful, for me it was easier than lesson 6. For lesson 7 I did a bicycle and a wheelbarrow to get away from doing a ton of wheels. And a blimp hahaha. HUGE congrats to you for finishing everything, it sounds like you had a rougher time than I did and I have SO much respect for your tenacity. Yeah, Uncomfortable is overhauling the lesson content, and recently updated the box challenge.

No problem. Quite possibly I suffered a bit more at the time due to time constraints. Drawing is one of those life long habits that gets easier the more you do it everyday. To be honest, I learned to ghost ellipses more on my own so I don't have to use the ellipse template. Possibly I should have bought a master ellipse set because I ended up buying a bunch of sets instead that never really had the right ellipse I needed. Wish I could have used digital because Lazy Nezumi works for technical, but free handing is what I enjoy more. The rougher time could have been from many factors as I had to balance a job with a lot of over time during the early 2020's. Thanks! I still draw everyday. Although due to time constraints I don't have enough time to make as much tutorials as I want to. Uncomfortable tends to do that a lot. It makes sense an iterative approach. I believe he has done that about two times already. He had to take burnout breaks as well. Which makes sense. I just hope he draws these days still. When I was giving a lot of critique, I got a bit burned out. I will have to check on the updated content Uncomfortable made. So I can keep up to date with practice. But I never stopped drawing boxes from time to time. It ended up kind of spilling into my other work. Haha. I tried to cover topics I learned from dab but possibly some of my stuff will be outdated based on his newer exercises. All in all, I think being able to freehand what I want was the greatest thing I developed overtime from dab. After completing it, I was a bit lost for an hour on what to do next. But I just kept practicing and drawing what I wanted to along the way. That appears to have worked for me.

Glad it helped. Having the determination to stick to it in the long run was the hardest for me.

It was really hard for me because I had no idea what to draw when I couldn’t draw. Like I was doing drawabox to learn to draw. It’s kind of like needing experience to get a job, but needing a job to get experience. 😕Haha. What helped me was trying out like online drawing multiplayer games. Draw with friends. I forget the name of the website, but I have it bookmarked. Whatever gets drawing in is my thought on the 50% rule.
