i feel like what you said was incredibly valid, sometimes you do just have to step back and go back to basics and practice and improve. no one is going to buy art they don't like so try your best to constantly improve

First off, as an artist who has had commissions, I am getting more people asking for commissions charging MORE than when I tried charging less. Partially due to skill and partially due to the fact that people will respect you more as an artist if you respect yourself and the time and energy it takes to make art. I put 30hrs into a commission that I got paid 20$ for and that paid for my supplies at most. I’ve have been creating art my whole life and it is just now that I’m starting to realize that I AM entitled to the price I post at because I not only have the skill to charge those prices but I’ve put work into it that SHOULD be paid for. And never stop trying to better yourself as an artist because later on you will be sought after for your skill and style which is why people will hired you to begin with.

You literally said it the best way possible😂 Not everyone is at a skill level to sell their art and that's okay! It's better for people to realize it now and work on it to grow, we've all been there!

Love your speedpaints and art so much.: DDDD like its soo good omg anyway, You inspired me to start taking art more seriously "again" with this video. Also its tweeter people will always twist words to fit their perspective or narrative. There always has to be a villain in an argument, no middle ground to agree on a tough subject.

i feel like things get very sensitive when it comes to artistic skill, i think its fair to acknowledge that you come from a place privilege while also holding truth to your own statement, you weren't wrong, improving your artistic skill will 100% increase the chance of getting a commission, not that it guarantees one but it definitely helps.

LMAO the tweets that had people mad. Wow. I totally agree with you. It's a harsh truth, but people need to hear it. If you want to make a living at art, you have to charge a living wage and you have to have a good product. If your skill level isn't high enough for you to charge more than $20, you need to improve in order to make it as an artist. I did a sale 3 years ago where I did pixelated chibis for $5 each because I needed money in a pinch. I don't regret it because they only took 30 minutes each, since I was just dressing a tiny base, and I only had to raise about $100. But I can't imagine sustaining a career like that. If I did it all over again, I'd charge $20/hr or more. I was pretty bad at digital painting at the time (I literally used a mouse back then💀) but my pixel art was really good. And if I don't get any customers, oh well, I hate doing commissions anyway. I'm glad the youtube algorithm pointed me to your channel btw. I like to watch other people draw while I'm drawing to stay on task. Internet people will go out of their way to be offended, try not to let it get to you. They're probably just jealous because you have a platform and your art is awesome. Haters are basically a compliment. 🤷

There comes a point where every artist has to "decide" they want to get better if they hope to make a living off their art. Fundamental ability is so important and the people not getting commissions have likely never done a spread of boxes, anatomy, gesture, or figure studies in their sketchbooks. It can take away from the fun of drawing a bit, but it is somewhat necessary to reach a skill level where commissions come from your work promoting itself. And it lends itself to the joy felt when you look at something you drew and can't believe its your work. Great video and thank you for your portrayal of Black characters, in how you don't whitewash aspects of their appearnce (hair, lips, nose etc.). And for the record I don't believe you were speaking from a place of privilege in your tweet. You spent time on your craft, developed your ability and saw an increase in the gravitation of people to your art. You get what you put out and like you stated, most people want to buy good art. You produce that and that's what has led to your success in receiving fair commissions. Anyone offended by your sound, honest and not unkind advice, likely needed to hear it most.

Sometimes it's hard for me to take things in so you casually talking about it and being so in depth makes learning all the better. I'm still working hard to gain more of an audience, especially on Twitter. I've got the compliments down which makes me feel better. I really appreciate the conversation aspect of this and speaking of your experience -- you're incredibly helpful and watching the way you colorize your lines and add warmth makes it that much easier. Not many people ever really talk about it and I’m not sure if it’s still going on, but I’m sorry that you got criticized for summarizing that in the manner that you did, your intentions are good and I’m happy to hear someone say what you did, it really helped me remember and understand that while growing my social media is good, aiming to increase my own skills as an artist can hold a place as important if not more beneficial in the long term!

So happy to discover your youtube channel! Been following you for a bit on twitter and happy to find your here. I really enjoy your 'talking' art vids, you have a nice voice and its therapeutic watching you work. I love artist vlogs so maybe weekly vlogs? Ultimately up to you but I'd be down for that haha. I love your idea for the art contest. I always felt that way about DTIYS and other artist-hosted art contests, like it's a way for them to get all this free art of their characters and it kinda rubs me the wrong way. But i LOVE your idea of a theme or outfit and everyone can draw whoever they want.

Thank you for this video! The points that you make are extremely valid. I do feel like Social Media has a high weight with luck. I also have commissions that I have opened twice now and the only times I've ever received from people was some friends. It's a constant uphill battle juggling 7 apps in hopes the right client will come across my art and go to the call of action. No matter how much genuine support I give out to others nothing happens... I'm going to continue to work as hard as possible to one day meet clients that genuinely like my work to allow me to make something for them. I'm going as far as making an animation in hopes that it would appease the algorithm and someone with a kind heart. Also want to say I truly enjoy the way you illustrate darker skin tones!

You are absolutely right for what you tweeted. Unfortunately on the internet, people tend to get offended easily which they reserve the right to be because that's their free speech. But if you want to start to make profit off it you do need to have skill. In an ideal world, people would support all artists out of the kindness of their heart and not based on skill level/follower count. But this isn't an ideal world, this is the real world. In the real world, art is a luxury. If people have an extra 20-50 dollars to spend they will never realistically commission a poorly skilled artist over a well skilled one. It sounds harsh, and criticism hurts. But sometimes we need to get offended in order to change. Being too comfortable in your art skill and not wanting to hear criticism or want to improve is a big mistake many beginner artists make. Stubbornness or conformity is a deadly sin when it comes to art.

To the drama you had. I think you are right. Because its not worth to draw for money when you have like 7-8h of work. (if we take normal work hours like in a job). If you would compare this to an low wage of a fulltime job its like 12-14. So alone 1-2h of work would be more worth than 20 bugs. I hope my example is not too far off tho. I like the Video! Really inspiring! I always look for other ppl to talk about art and stuff but nowdays its so hard to connect. I always feel like I wanna write some artists and chat about art and stuff but then again fearing to get rejected and be a wierdo trying to talk to random ppl on the internet :D I am sure I am not alone with this wierd feeling.

All my friends and a few other followers tell me my art is beautiful and would love to commission me but in the end there's nothing so it really got depressive to me . Doesn't help that Instagram hasn't been kind to me too.... I'm just distancing myself from it and everyone, drawing a lot ( mostly venting) since there's other shit going on too ..well idk Ig I just wanted this out there . Even so I'll just continue with art hoping to fulfill my dream soon .

i definitely agree with if your not getting commissioned its probably because of your skill people want to commission good and high quality art because it falls into the category of getting what you pay for people are more willing to pay more for a higher quality and higher skilled piece than paying something cheap for a lower quality piece its not being mean its just sadly how things work in the commission community taking a step back to improve will not just help you get more commissions it'll help you and your skills as well its a win win situation when you improve your art your skills get better and a higher chance of commissions.

sorry if i tuned out and missed the info, but how would you go about delivering the finished commission piece? its what im most worried about, as i dont want the images quality to be horribly compressed through instant messaging. would sending it as a file via email be a better option?

I'm at a place right now where my commission post has been up for a while and still no commissions but that's fine with me. If there isn't anybody willing to commission a piece from me for the price I've set out then that's their decision, and I don't really feel obligated to lower them especially since I'm a minor and don't currently need the money. I think a lot of the reason I haven't gotten any commissions is because I haven't been around a lot on Instagram and haven't done enough for me to be trustworthy. I may have a fair amount of people as an audience because of my friendships with more influential artists, but I think they'd rather stick with what they know. I also agree that I have LOTS of room to improve and struggle daily with my art. I'm always trying to push myself by doing hard poses and backgrounds and just anything that feels out of my comfort zone and gives me that frustrated feeling. That frustrated feeling is how I know that what I'm working on is something that will help me level up :)

I remember when I gave someone a valid criticism and they flipped out on me. Were they expecting praises? But she was asking what I thought about it. And how I thought about it is that there was a lot to practice on. The arms were too thin, the pose was too stiff and the hands needed more practice because they were scribbles. Mind you, she wasn't a pre-schooler crying over their scribbled art. But she was a middle schooler, same age as me, who wanted to take art seriously.. I worded it the nicest way possible by telling them that there is certain things that needed more practice but overall, it was good. I even listed what needed some practice and she flipped out on me, storming off. I felt like shit for trying to help.
