Two weeks after Fischer's sensational 6-0 shutout streak in the Fischer - Taimanov Candidates Quarterfinal (1971), at Vancouver, he met at Temple Buell College, Denver, Colorado USA to play a 10-game candidates match against Bent Larsen starting on July 6, 1971. Larsen had qualified from the Larsen - Uhlmann Candidates Quarterfinal (1971). Fischer said to a reporter before the match: "Been traveling for a year, match to match. I need a personal life. I'm not as narrow as some people think, you know. But right now all I think of is the world championship. Chess is my whole life" ... "(Larsen)'s good. But I think I'm the best around. I don't say that to brag. I think it's true. I love the game - and I hate the Russians because they've almost ruined it. They only risk the title when they have to, every three years. They play for draws with each other but play to win against the Western masters. Draws make for dull chess, wins make for fighting chess." (1)
And fighting chess is what Fischer delivered. After six consecutive wins he dispensed with Denmark's best, repeating another amazing 6-0 performance. Preparing to face Boris Spassky in a World Championship match, he would first meet the winner of the Petrosian - Korchnoi Candidates Semifinal (1971). This turned out to be Petrosian, hence the Fischer - Petrosian Candidates Final (1971).

    I have a friend that deals with altitude sickness. We discovered this while climbing a (small) mountain and had to cut it short. It's actually quite a difficult condition to cope with. It's thoroughly uncomfortable, especially if you're doing something that requires concentration or endurance. I can't imagine trying to play Fischer in his prime feeling that way.

    Philip Lee I’m sure that obscene attacks might provoke retaliation. Hopefully, they feel loyalty to their coworkers. The SLCC is a long standing, highly respected member of the chess community. If the response had been respectful towards them, I’m sure they’d listen and evaluate. Asking for mature responses in 2018 might be optimistic but communication shouldn’t be stifled. Cheers.

    The Pittsburgh Steelers used to have a safety named Ryan Clark. When the Steelers played the broncos in Denver, he was unable to play because he had sickle cell trait. He played once and it almost killed him. He sat out every other time we played in Denver. Just bought that might be a good example of how serious altitude can be for some people. Keep up the great work Agad. Cheers to you for being so classy with the Saint Louis chess club and telling people to change their dislikes to likes. That said, you’re the best chess channel on KZread. Finally, tell your dog to keep up the great work as well :).

    1:05 this is real. Everybody thinks they get sick when they go somewhere because there’s people when a nationality is the altitude adjustment as well as the temperature I went from Florida to Vegas for a month and when I went back to Florida it took me at least a month to feel normal again However I agree there’s no reason it would’ve randomly kicked in on match 4.

    It seems that Temple Buell College, later renamed Colorado Women's College, is located in Denver, which is about 1609 meters high. It would be unusual for altitude sickness to occur below 2500 meters unless Bent Larsen had a chronic disease of some sort. It should be something else.

    At that elevation, altitude sickness can last several days. Drinking lots of water helps reduce the symptoms, but I would not want to play chess. Funnily enough, last time I got it, when I was physically active the symptoms went away until I sat down and rested, when they would return. The symptoms are fairly specific to the person and can vary from each visit to high altitude. Combined with another dehydrating condition would be problematic.

    He's from Denmark, highest point in the country being 161 m/528 ft, so not unlikely yeah, though one would imagine he'd have traveled enough around Europe at various higher elevation places and be aware of his disposition to altitude sickness.

    I moved from sea level to high altitude (3300 metres) a few years ago and noticed that while the immediate symptoms dissipated within about 48 hours, I was noticeably less sharp at taxing mental tasks for at least a week. I could only feel the difference when I tried to do something extremely cerebral - in everyday life everything felt normal. So 'OK to climb' and 'OK to play competitive chess' may not be directly comparable.

    #suggestion Anand vs Topalov, 2010 World chess championship match. Btw your videos are amazing 👍.. i started playing chess again after 8 years. So, thanks ! "Before the World Chess Championship 2010 match with Veselin Topalov, Anand, who had booked on the flight Frankfurt-Sofia on 16 April, was stranded due to the cancellation of all flights following the volcano ash cloud from Eyjafjallajökull. Anand asked for a three-day postponement, which the Bulgarian organisers refused on 19 April. Anand eventually reached Sofia on 20 April, after a 40-hour road journey.[46] Consequently, the first game was delayed by one day.[47] The match consisted of 12 games. In Game 1, Topalov quickly defeated Anand in 30 moves, utilizing a very sharp line of attack that broke through Anand's Grunfeld Defence. It was revealed afterwards that Topalov had found the line during his opening preparation, with the help of a powerful supercomputer loaned to him by Bulgaria's Defense Department.[48]Anand quickly responded with a win in Game 2, employing a novelty out of the Catalan Opening that was not easily recognized by computers at the time (15. Qa3!?, followed by 16. bxa3!). Anand would win again with the Catalan in Game 4, only to drop Game 8 and leave the score level once again.[49] After 11 games the score was tied at 5½-5½. Anand won game 12 on the Black side of a Queen's Gambit Declined to win the game and the match. Topalov chose to accept a pawn sacrifice by Anand, hoping to force a result and avoid a rapid chess tiebreak round. But after Topalov's dubious 31st and 32nd moves, Anand used the sacrifice to obtain a strong attack against Topalov's relatively exposed king. Topalov subsequently resigned, allowing Anand to retain the World Championship." Ahh, nice pawn end game here after the bishops are off the board. You could tell the chess beginners about the King VS Passed Pawn, can it go or must stay? The tutorial you can use is based on the pawn's box if you cut diagonally, if the enemy king is in the box, the pawn will fall before it can promote. I never play Rapid, so I wonder if regular players would encounter situations like that, would they blunder or play it right like Fischer did?

    To enrich your vast knowledge: there's no such thing as "oxygen pressure", (unless you are in a oxygen tank). It's oxygen level and/or air pressure, which both is low at high altitude. :)

  • @UnshavenStatue

    @UnshavenStatue

    Actually it's very fine to talk about oxygen pressure as a shorthand for the "partial pressure of oxygen", which is commonly referred to, as it is the partial pressure of atmospheric oxygen compared to the partial pressure of internal oxygen (in the lungs and blood) which describe whether or not hypoxia (aka "altitude sickness") occurs.

    But If you can talk about the pressure of air then you can talk about the pressure of gas obviously as gas is related to volume which is about the topic of pressure, because oxygen is a gas you can talk about the pressure/density(but for volume scale) of oxygen in the current atmosphere which means Oxygen pressure is clearly a thing.

    Oxygen level isn't much responsible for altitude sickness. Its low atmospheric pressure. As a result, one has to breath a lot more air for the same amounts of O2.

    @1:52 - Larsen may well have had oxygen problems, even though it wasn't on the 1st day. I experienced low oxygen on a mountain hike. But, it happened on the 3rd day of the hike, and it was at the end of the day, and fortunately, it was at the end of the hike and the ranger station was close by. They gave me oxygen. I can't explain why the oxygen problem didn't strike me earlier in the hike. After they gave me oxygen, I felt normal again.
