Drake Maye's Pro Potential: Another Trevor Lawrence? | The Play Sheet

Спорт

The field of quarterback prospects is a crowded one in this year's NFL draft, and while USC's Caleb Williams is a presumed lock for the first pick, UNC's Drake Maye is just ahead of LSU's Jayden Daniels for the no. 2 spot, according to Vegas oddsmakers. Maye's aggressiveness, mobility, and arm strength have The Ringer's Ben Solak comparing him to Trevor Lawrence. But with those upsides come some question marks regarding footwork, decision-making, and risk assessment as a passer. Solak digs into the tape in this QB prospect breakdown.

Commanders fan here. I gotta think the Jayden Daniels hype over Drake Maye is other teams trying to bring Maye's stock down so they can scoop him up at 3. Maye's traits are top end, with footwork issues that I would think can be cleaned up. Is he a sure thing? No such thing, but the ceiling is higher than Jayden Daniels. To be fair, Jayden Daniels has better pocket awareness and is a better runner, but JD isn't a creative passer. JD doesn't typically scramble to make off platform throws like Maye. JD mostly scrambles to run, he puts his head down and runs, which doesn't translate to the NFL (at least not until Lamar Jackson wins a chip). Can JD change that? Maybe, but he's 2 years older than Maye and played a lot of college ball, so I'm doubtful. Whereas Maye just needs to keep getting better at what he's already doing.

Washington *already hired* Dan Quinn & Cliff Kingsbury. So what's a little more? I'm not even joking. CK couldn't win in college with Mahomes & his lack of ability to go beyond basic plays both caused that & his idiotic pressuring of Kyler Murray to learn to play like Dan Marino. So yeah, Jayden Daniels would be a disaster under him for 100% sure. This doesn't mean Maye _won't be_ though. People don't realize how much play-calling affects games, even after seeing the Eagles go from the S-B to a laughing stock with the Same Roster. This was *all due* to play-calling as was the Ravens losing to K.C. in the playoffs. Some coaches (Reid, Shanahan in the first half of games) adjust to the game on the field. _MOST_ can't adjust under pressure. Most fall apart under high pressure (Shanahan in the second half is a Completely Different play-caller). Sean McVay just hired an assistant because he realizes that this sometimes happens to him. Most NFL coaches can benefit from this.

If the Commanders were a serious team, they would have an offensive coordinator / head coach so they could have stability in that role. Best for everyone that Maye lands in a Shanahan system like the Vikings, especially with a top receiver in Jefferson. @@pmb2p4 it’s really not about the teams. It’s about the GM and the coach. It’s the only uncapped part of your team, getting a good GM and head coach. The Bills hired their GM and head coach along with an excellent coordinating staff ahead of drafting Josh Allen. And they supported him with good trades and good drafts. It’s getting harder as his salary is too high, in my opinion, but that’s a different topic. Same with Joe Burrow. They are finally drafting well and actually spending money on free agents in Cincinnati. That’s what you’re supposed to do when you get a top 10 quarterback. And the Jaguars are doing what they’ve always done. They have a bad GM making mediocre decisions. HC Doug Petersen got the benefit of following terrible coaches and is messing up Trevor Lawrence’s progress with bad offensive coordinators and mediocre head coach decision making. It could all shorten his career and It’s completely unnecessary. Just pick a stable organization with a very good offensive coordinator as a head coach and that’s the right formula for the NFL, at least for the next 10 years. Jacksonville has no leverage if he decides not to sign the next contract. As for Washington, I know they have new owners and that’s great, but they picked the wrong head coach and we all know it was not anywhere close to their first choice. No clue if their new GM is any good, but why waste your career trying to find out?

@@terencebarnes7393 it’s not rare to hear people describe head coaches as leaders of men when that is all there is to talk about. They waited way too long to land their head coach mostly because they did it by committee. everybody knows they did not get their first, second or even third choice for head coach and then double down by picking Cliff Kingsbury for OC. Dan is a good defensive coordinator, no doubt, but look at the trend across the whole league. It’s mostly offensive coordinators as head coaches and the best ones have come out of the Shanahan system as it elevates players and allows quarterbacks that are just OK to thrive. See the 49ers and their last two quarterbacks to lead them to the Super Bowl.

I think one thing you’re consistently overlooking is his issues with quick game. He dirts so many outs, and his precision is spotty at best. You gotta do the little things right _ALL_ the time & be able to come through in the clutch *when needed.* _Unless_ your "play-caller_ is Sean McDermott, whose three offensive calls are mainly "hike the ball. Then uhh, Josh does something with it." They made Such A Mistake keeping him & letting Daboll go. Daboll made the playoffs with Dan Jones & no receiving corps. He very well could become a viable starter in the league but he would need to fix his Accuracy issues, Footwork issues, decision making, processing, release…all of these would need addressing and working on consistency and the drifting drives me to curse. He often times in the games I watched him drifted into pressure. Not just that but when he didn’t and wouldn’t be pressured he’s throw an inaccurate ball. He often tried to throw wide receivers where the defender had leverage and in the NFL that’s an interception. I see him more as limited starter turning into a backup.

I love these but it's a bit disingenous to talk about his red flags and not mention his inaccuracy issues or just show one play where a bad route affects the throw. There are examples like his pick 6 against Clemson in the red zone where he makes a dumb decision coupled with an innaccurate throw that hurts his team. I understand this is more about questioning the narrative and that's fine, but those type of plays are why people have soured on him and it isn't mentioned at all. That is just one example, but his lowlight reek is as bad as his highlight plays are good. Watch Kur tWarner's analysing a couple of full games and it looks like a compilation of bad plays, I would've loved to see Ben's analysis in those plays.

Pretty sure the play at 11:00 where you think the OL let him down was 100% Drake's fault. The play worked as planned, he had the guy wide open like they intended and it just needed timing and touch (btw Drake is shy about touch throws too). He passed it up and created a sack. The video started with 3 or 4 highlights starting in 3rd and long, which points to my biggest concerns with him. His aggressiveness is a double edged sword as he passed up way too many productive plays in early downs and was largely responsible for putting his own team in bad situations way too frequently. I still have Maye QB2, I just felt like this video underplays the risks and is a little misguided with parts of the praise.

The Best Team for the Vikings to trade with are the Commanders for Two Reasons. 1) They need a QB for JJ. 2) Anyone the Commanders pick with what you trade will hurt you less than giving picks to competent teams. They drafted Forbes over Gonzales. They hired Quinn & Kingsbury, _KNOWN failures_ at the positions they hired them at. New owners? Doesn't matter. Some things are inexplicable. How did the Ravens who were the crappy Browns become good at drafting & the new Browns sucked again? Chargers gonna Charger & Commanders are gonna screw up all their high-end prospects. It's like Joseph Conrad's "Heart of Darkness." The location seems to determine how crappy they are? (Except the Chargers who moved).

NFL team _KEEPS making_ terrible management decisions. I didn't watch in the 2010s but a former player talked about how they were on pace to break a team rushing record when they stopped running & stopped winning. The player was getting a little too familiar with the HC begging him to return to the play-calling that won them games & the HC lost his mind & said "I'm tired of you guys getting all that attention from the press." So they had a child as HC, not for the first time. Just as Chargering follows the franchise & not the location, there seems to be the opposite magic occurring in Cleveland & D.C. The original Browns moved to Baltimore & became one of the consistently greatest franchises at drafting, then the new Browns continued to suck so badly at it, they may have appeared in 3 S-Bs by now had they drafted Lamar. Be it the influence of the pool of corruption that is congress, let's face it, the poor management of the Commanders goes back decades, to the '80s at least. But no, I don't *expect them* to give up their #2 pick. They traded Howell though why? To not have a back-up QB in case the rookie doesn't pan out the year after their rookie QB didn't pan out? Also, Justin Fields the QB who turned the lowly Bears into the #1 offense in the NFL 3 weeks straight *BEFORE* they acquired D.J. Moore was available for next to nothing. They're picking a QB at #2 when they don't have to for the joy of it instead of examining other options. It's one thing if you have what to build around, like the Jets with an amazing defense & lots of talent at key positions. Get a QB & some o-line help & boom. But they let Sweat & Samuel go, also have no d-line, or secondary & Robinson didn't have a great year due to that o-line. Every single prospect that isn't Caleb has problems that make them seem like they aren't NFL-ready _now._ It's one thing for _fans_ to idiotically think that only QB play determines wins, quite another to find coaches, owners & managers think that. Aaron Rodgers is a _FAR_ better QB in his worst season than Brady ever was at his best but people don't see it.
