Drake Maye - Episode #1 | Kurt Warner Breaks Down the Game Tape | College Series '24

Спорт

All right, welcome to part three of the college series StudyBall. So, we looked at my son, EJ Warner, two weeks ago. Go back and check it out. We looked at Caleb Williams last week. Today, we're going to look at Drake Maye. Okay, so no particular order on why I'm going through it like this. Here, a lot of people talk out there and say, "Okay, Caleb's one and then maybe Drake's two or whatever." I'm not worried about that. I may end up getting to that point as we get closer to the draft and ranking my guys. But right now, I'm just trying to break them down and evaluate who they are. Okay, so I'm gonna jump into Drake. We're looking at a game that I thought was uniform from a statistical standpoint, one of his better games against Duke. A double overtime win against Duke. Threw for 340 yards. Only one touchdown in the game, but a lot of yards, got a number of completions in this game. So I like to be able to see the gambit of a lot of throws and a guy that has a good game and puts up some yardage. So, last week the stats were really good for Caleb Williams. When you watch the tape, I don't think you're wild by how we played in that game. So we can't just go on stats. We gotta see a bigger picture. So let's dive into this game against Duke by Drake Maye and let's take a look at who he is as a quarterback. #drakemaye #nfldraft #nfl

    Separate from processing...After watching this, seems like Maye might be a bit more used to 'NFL open' than some of the other prospects just based on how little separation his guys are getting. Will be interesting to compare this to Daniels, who I think will have guys way more open. While it might not affect getting to the right read, probably makes it tougher when deciding whether to pull the trigger in that split second.

    He just needs a little work on his footwork to hit his short throws more accurate. He should work that out in camp and preseason and be comfortable with it by mid season. He's making the reads, looking off safety, throwing with anticipation, resetting pocket with eyes downfield. He's pretty much there. Week 1 starter after fixing "getting ready to throw".

  • @JaketheMongoose
    @JaketheMongoose2 ай бұрын

    Thanks for the breakdown Kurt! I think he really is naturally accurate but plays without setting his feet with good timing and rhythm too much and that causes inconsistency and major misses at times. Drake had an interesting discussion with Colt McCoy about how UNC asked him to handle hots. Drake would set the protections to slide away from the hot and have Drake bail away from the rusher and throw away from him. From what I've learned on this channel, that seems unsound but at least we can know what his process was there and NFL coaches may teach that differently. He has arm talent for days and a natural playmaking ability. I think an NFL coach that provides solid infrastructure will help him to play on schedule and be consistent more.

    He’s only 21. 2 years in college with no real talent around him and he still threw like 37TDs and like 8INTs. That’s the thing he may not be ready for the NFL yet. That’s why I want the Vikings to trade up for him, and sit him for a MINIMUM of 1 year. Mahomes first 2 years in college he went 50TD/20INT. In a run n gun offense. If he woulda went to the NFL after his 2nd year people woulda said he ain’t ready for the NFL. Which he wasn’t. And after 3years in college he still got drafted 10th overall. So 9 other teams missed out on his potential. And that’s what you have with Maye, Potential. He can dominate, and he would dominate if he stayed in college this year. Sam Howell was the most highly sought after QB in free agency. Could someone explain why? We have so many QB geniuses evaluating QBs during the draft process. All these pundits saying who's #1 or should be a first round QB. That said, why was Sam more valuable than Kenny Pickett, Justin Fields, Sam Darnold, Zach Wilson and Mac Jones who were all first rounders? In my evaluation, outside Caleb Williams, there are not any QBs in the draft better than Sam Howell. He can make throws at all levels. He has a time-to-throw at 2.4 seconds versus Caleb's 3.4. Caleb is a turnover machine. Jayden Daniels has the highest potential to be a bust. He's wrong on so many levels. All you have to do is have a cold one with any of his receivers. He puts either doesn't see his receivers, under throws them or puts them in jeopardy. I would gamble on multiple QB3..6 QBs than on Jayden. In regards to Drake Maye, he's prototypical. All of this b.s. can be cleaned up. That said, does he have Sam's experience, competitiveness, heart or desire? I think he falls short on these intangibles. I think Caleb is more about the $$$ and Jayden is going through the motions. When I look at Penix, I see a serious minded QB like CJ Stroud. Those are the real intangibles. I need a QB who's going to go through the grind and do the little things. I'm not too sold on many of these prospects.

    This guy is the definition of a mediocre QB. His tape is not better than Penix Jr. and they have him in the 2nd round bcuz of injury. He never played in any big games in college. He was destroyed by mid level teams. What do you think will happen in the NFL? He’s the second coming of Mitch Tribisky. A talented but very inconsistent player who is over hyped bcuz of prototypical size. As a Commanders/Redskins fan I seen all this same stuff in Sham Howell aka Pick Six Sam. Bad footwork. No timing. No anticipation. Bad mechanics. Not truly reading by the defense. This guy is gonna be bad in the league.

Before (like WAY before) the GM/Coach/Staff upgrades, I was like, trade down and get him top of 2nd rd. @ #36! Fast forward to now, the scheme KK has doesn't seem to suit him, BUT, they act like he wasn't scrambling when he had to! He's just a bit ol' school and ain't afraid of the rush. When it comes to someone this young it’s not about what they did, even tho his TD/INT ratio was really good. It’s what they are capable of with a teammate like Justin Jefferson, TJ hockenson, and a great OL. He had nothing on his team that stood out, yet he balled.

    Athleticism isn't important at QB & I wish people would stop talking about the pipe dream of a Dual Threat QB in the NFL.
