Dragonflight Is Doing WHAT To Malfurion? (Alpha Spoilers!)

Ойындар

So a story beat leaked from the Dragonflight expansion and when I tell you I'm not surprised as a night elf fan to see what the writers of this Sisyphean exercise of a game thought would be a good idea...
World of Warcraft has a lot of great and interesting lore, the world has a charm to it that is hard to find elsewhere, its engrossing and fun and wonderous as long as you don't think about it too hard or pay attention to the story skittering this way and that like water droplets on a hot pan.
"Why are you still here if you hate it so much?!" Because I still love it and I stupidly believe it can be improved.
This? This is just me venting as a night elf player.

Also, you forgot to mention that the great invasion of the Night Elf lands was done...at night. When Night Elves are at the height of their power. The only race that can see as well at night as in the day, the only race that can blend with the shadows. And they're effortlessly outmaneuvered and outplayed in their own territory and when they should be at their strongest. Literally all the things they're best at.

Oh fuck, that's even worse. I didn't even play BFA, and that sounds like a terrible plot point for the Night Elves to *lose* their only advantage in combat because there was a larger army of 'Rawr FOR THE HORDE!' Edit: It shows how much Blizzard cares for the Alliance. If they fucked *one* of the Alliance Races, a la, Not a single bit.

@@ArmageddonEvil I am not joking. The secret path mentioned in the game saurfang took? Climbing down the giant mountains, with no climbing equipment, from Felwood into Darkshore. Where a few druids or mounted sentinels, or even wild Chimaera, could wipe out the defenseless army. A single Ancient could have been told by the wind, as TBC showed they can hear the elements, and killed their army with a spell. But nope. Night Elf spirits and powers and basic military tactics are too annoying for blizz.

I have seen some people, mostly other Alliance players, respond to this with "what about all the attention the Night Elves have been getting with BfA and Shadowlands?" To which I retort: there is such thing as the _wrong_ kind of attention. It is something we on the Horde have known for years, that just because you are in the spotlight doesn't mean you like it. This is the same thing that makes Alliance players scream there is a Horde bias despite when they get attention the "attention" is more like a public shaming than being the star of the show. The Night Elves getting so much story does not mean it is good and they certainly haven't gotten any satisfactory resolution. It is ironic that the Horde knows their pain better than their fellow Alliance members do despite being technically the source of their hardship. Like you said if you were Horde or a Night Elf BfA was a lose/lose with most not being happy. Sylvanas grief Horde 🤝Night Elves

This is honestly super depressing cause i've always loved the night elves since Warcraft 3, they were the badass amazons with unique druid magics and now... -_- the writing just constantly f**ks them While questing in Ashenvale there's a gnome who mocks the night elves, claiming they're to stupid to deal with goblins, Xavius in Legion completely ruined Tyrande and Malfurion's reputation with the constant "Malfuion my love where are you! Tyrande help me D':" and the whole "malfurion for Ysera" thing makes no sense, hell Cenarius has died twice, how come he gets a free pass? Cenarius remaining in Ardenweald for Ysera would make way more sense, i've heard people say they're just killing Malfurion off because he's to powerful, but considering Jaina and Khadgar are still there (And the writers have literally never let Malfurion be his 'to powerful' self) that's total BS. I was looking forward to Dragonflight after the shitshow of Shadowlands, but if this is what the writings going to continue to be like then i'm done -_-

This video is amazing. Now for the rant. The "so tried" line just goes so well with how I feel. I've only play night elves since warcraft 3 and in wow. It was bad enough losing there immortality and the risk that they will lose power over nature in time, however with that there was always hints that they will get it back. It's been constant L. The night elves should have been there own faction , in lore there where too powerful to be just another alliance race. They could have had NE, dryads, mini mountain giants and furbolgs. I honestly thought dragon flight would be the expansion they really tried to make it up to the night elves but they decided to give them another huge blow.

Honestly, they made the decision to kill off Ysera, and then they cheapen it in Shadowlands and now futher cheapen it in Dragonflight and not only do they trivialize her death, they're taking down 4 characters (2 major old lore characters, 1 cosmic entity, and 1 new character that has much reason to step up and shine as Wrathion and Kalecgos combined), while also taking down the entire night elf race as well. Like holy shit, what is this writing? Ysera doesn't NEED to come back, you could just as easily have Malfurion look after the Emerald Dream while Merithra steps up to be the leader of the Green Dragonflight and then take her place as caretaker of the Emerald Dream after. But nah, lets add some uneccessary and cliche drama by having some bullshit sacrifice to bring a character back that doesn't even need to come back. So with this one passage in the lore, they further trivialize Ysera's death, they shit all over Malfurion, they shit all over Tyrande who they've been shitting all over for the passed 3 expansions, they shit all over Elune who they've already written to be the biggest dumbass in warcraft history, they throw Merithra back into obscurity because she has literal 0 reasons to EXIST if Ysera comes back and they further shit all over the Night Elf race. I don't even play Alliance and I absolutely despise what they're doing with the Night Elves.

Thank you for this video, it was very cathartic. It still baffles me that unlike the Systems Team who have taken blame upon themselves and made tangible steps forward in fixing the system mistakes that made Shadowlands so much worse, the lore team still has their noses high up in the air, unwilling to acknowledge anything. As you said, Cataclysm was the point where Night Elf fans like me started noticing some signs that that the writing for the race was going a bit fishy, but we still held on, hoping for good developments like the amazing Old God lore and the human/dwarf/gnome lore that we got back in WoTLK. It was baffling for me to learn that they had plans to burn down Teldrassil that far back and managed to fulfill it in BfA much against the community outcry, and the handling of the race afterwards to this day. I have also quit the game as many others who had faith and hope in the lore of WoW and after seeing it being dashed to pieces again and again. I care too much and it is simply too tiring to dread every piece of new information instead of speculating excitedly as I do for other games. As someone who fell in love with the Warcraft universe and the Night Elf race 20 years back with Warcraft 3, I vaguely cling to hope that the story team is wiped clean and they bring in people who hold fans in a higher regard instead of harbouring narcissists who only "care about the stories they want to tell", damn the previous lore. It would bring me so much joy for a new team to come aboard and say, "Hey everyone. We know you don't like what's been happening in the lore for the past x years. So we're retconning it all and here's the next exciting step". It would be amazing not only in terms of the Warcraft universe, but it would be a slap in the face to those who worked so hard to ruin it these past years. Yeah, I'm resentful, I know. Anyway, this video helped me channel the rage I felt for what has been done to my favourite race for the past 12+ years, so thanks!

Druids who'll trap you with vines and pull you under the very ground itself to bury you alive? A nocturnal race who can literally meld into the shadows to hunt you from? Who cares about orcs vs humans! Tired, played out. Night elves SHOULD have been the new, ultimate rivals to the orcs and Horde. Ashenvale should be an objectively terrifying place for the Horde; every tree branch rustle should make a Horde traveler in Ashenvale see their life flash before their eyes. Ugh. Now he's being locked away, just like Illidan was. Why can Blizzard not just give us the Night Elves we had? The only lore I care about is one of the Kaldorei but the masses haven't seen what we have. They don't know what the Night Elves are capable of because its looked behind books of old. So, I'll cuddle my fanon where the Night Elves are still the most ferocious race in the Alliance alongside worgen, Malfurion and Tyrande actually get character development besides "woman gets traumatized even further and malfurion does nothing to make illidan seem cooler´" and are actually appreciated by the rest of the Alliance (both in universe and by the writers)

Thank you! Finally, someone said what night elf players feel. My biggest problem with writing night elves was making them important but ignoring them at the end of the expansion. Since the legion, night elves seem to be an main part of the story. However, they always disappear after first patch, right after sacrifice or losing something. We lost Ysera in legion, and what next? Burning Teldrasill, what has tyrande done with power capable destroy Old god? Shadowlans, after killing innocent souls burned alive, Tyrande stops her revenge and won't even fight with Jailer, the source of all her suffering! Writers will always choose their favorites character for the most important moments, obeying logic

To make it even worse, in the beggning SL Elune wasn't one to stop Tyrande from killing Sylvanas, but Malfurion. During this conversation, Tyrande was to kill her husband and thus lose control of her power. As you see Blizzard has been trying to get rid of Malfurion since Teldrasill (maybe even sooner).

Now we do have a little hope they won't go through with it past alpha because in the past, there has been many big lore event that got written off in alpha thanks to fan backlash. Two popular ones were how Rommath was supposed to be a secret villain in cataclysm and a boss during the hour of twilight (to contrast Archbishop Benedictus for horde players) and how Wrathion was supposed to be the disguised shaman in highmountain during Legion. Both got taken out due to fan backlash as Rommath lorewise was described as an impatient mage who still resisted the fel temptation for the sake of his people and it wouldn't make sense for him to turn evil like this (he's more anti-hero imo) and Wrathion pretending to be the shaman leader of the highmountain wouldn't make sense unless he was born there thousand of years ago which he wasn't, he was born in the badlands and recently in cataclysm. There was some downside following those retractions. For the case of Rommath, they replaced the reveal with a character so minor in Horde lore that people were puzzled why that reveal seemed like a big deal and during the hour of twilight, horde players were supposed to be shocked that Archbishop Benedictus turned evil when... he has no involvement with the horde? It was kinda confusing for horde players and so much more when Thrall denounced the archbishop as a spiritual traitor of his people. Sorry why does he care about alliance religion? And with Wrathion well... his absence for legion was perhaps the biggest fan rage since he was the cause of the legion mess to begin with! He was nowhere to be found, not even a small hint anywhere. Like I myself am still angry to this day! So for the sake of highmountain's plot they created a whole new black dragon, Ebyssian, who for some reason existed without Deathwing's corruption for millennias somehow? Nah just conveniently add in that magical titan hammer fixed him upon birth! But there was good sides to these decisions! Rommath now "certified not a traitor" became very instrumental for blood elf lore afterwards, particularly in Mist of Pandaria where even though he was directly involved with the divine bell incident, he felt guilty that Aethas Sunreaver, a fellow mage he was tutored with in their youth, took the blame and personally lead a rescue mission. Add in the lore detail how different their politics are (one chose to serve Silvermoon city and serve the horde while the other to serve the Kirin Tor for the sake of neutrality) and that rescue arc became a symbol of how the blood elves, though culturally divided between those in Kirin Tor or Silvermoon city, are still one people with a tight cultural bond with each other. And Ebyssian himself was very important in both Legion and BFA story progression. Heck the interaction between Wrathion and Ebyssian as two long lost relatives finding out both existed without each other's knowledge (maybe not for Wrathion's spies) felt so genuine and wholesome it was probably one of the few highlights of BFA. Maybe this interaction was what made Wrathion decide he should return the black dragonflight back to their noble roles as the defenders of Azeroth instead of selfish goals and how he chose to uncorrupt the remaining black dragons instead of killing them like he has done in the past. Here's me hoping Blizzard will fix this Malfurion alpha mess and get creative like they did before. Heck, here's a personal pitch: Malfurion and Tyrande will learn to overcome their grief each in their own ways thanks to Merithra teaching them more about night elf culture and the wonders of the dream now that she's the new green dragonflight aspect. But she herself will look up to them as surrogate parents seeing she too is also grieving after recently losing her mother, Ysera, and even some of her close siblings like Karkarius and Thessera of which she saw their passing first hand during BFA. Each trying to overcome griefs of their own without feeling high and mighty about it and turning the plight of the night elf from "revenge is wrong!" to "wounded people need each other to overcome trauma"... Though they should still team up to hunt down horde as a treat cause revenge still taste very sweet >:D

The decline of the night elves started with the fact that for an MMO Blizzard needed to level the playing field. They had to allow both genders to be any race or class. That gutted the matriarchal society of the night elves. Then they had to split the existing races into two opposing factions for PvP. And for whatever reasons the night elves turned on the pacifist Thrall, whom they had just stood united with during the Battle of Mount Hyjal, only to be subserviant to the human king of the Alliance they have never actually met in WC3. And whom was missing for the first couple of expansions of WoW as well. There goes the more than 10.000 years old civilization out the window. The fact that the oldest race had to live in the newest capital city which they built atop a new world tree was also pretty lame. They never lived atop Nordrassil in the past 10.000 years. Didn't they have a capital during that time? Some ruin to rebuild?

Meet Blizzard, the company that doesn't respect its own IP. Spend ten seconds of applying logic, not only should the Horde have lost the War of the Thorns, the Horde as of the end WoD at least half way through Legion shouldn't have even continued existing as a political entity. But instead its members rather than act of independent will and a desire to be honorable instead give up all their free will to blindly serve evil warchiefs who will get them killed, and then to "prove" the Horde hasn't been written as blatant badguys next betray the Horde to the Alliance...because you know having anti-badguy dudes defect to team "good guys who do no wrong" totally paints the team they came from as good and honorable. Litterally shitting on the Night Elves is the only way Blizzard can fake the Horde being a viable threat or even a world power rather than a bunch of disjointed tribes beneath the Alliance's notice. If the writers at Blizzard could for once reverse the roles of the Horde and Alliance. Make it so the Ironforge Dwarves, or King Greymane were the guys blatantly in the wrong as they twirl their sudden unexplainable snidely wiplash mustaches the NE would get shown as the power house they are, and do the role of the Tauren...but better. The Horde went from the End of WC3 to WoW as the Underdogs with a bad past they were trying to rise above. Since cataclysm Blizzard's inability to do anything other than 70s/80s cartoon villains with no moral nuance whatsoever has made the Horde have to show some sort of dominant dark supremacy while the Alliance, the force with the Night Elf political world Super power as just one of their members and a trifacta that brings the equivalent of the entirety of NATO to the table by themselves....and these forces have to be initially intimidated by the cartoon villains of the Horde...the Horde that is an alliance of primitive tribes that were as of WC3 most of them on the verge of extinction. Blizzard's inability to write even half decent villains means that every time they need to make a villains or show how strong someone is, they need to wail on a existing character/faction. So they decided to Piccolo/Worf the entirety of the Night Elves.

They decided to kill off Ysera, it was upsetting (and cheap) so on one hand I like the idea of her returning, but on the other hand they're doing it in a way that further hurts the race they've spent way too long kicking (and its not like Tyrande needs more trauma either.)

Look thee game is fucked and unrecoverable. And i say that as someone who is interested in gaming industry, gamee design, public reaction to games and gaming every day for yours since childhood (i dont even own a tv). ALL the vectors are pointing TOWARDS the drain and blizzard is doing EVEEEEEEERYTHING in thir power to ACCELERATE THE DECLINE. The fundamentals of gameplay like leveling - which is there to create a soft method of pacing players through the content is GONE because IDIOT PLAYERBASE demanded it removed. (they literally pay to buy a game and then pay to skip it because of inferiority complex they are trying to placate instead of playing a game for fun. Infact the very fact the game makes demands of players time and skill is instead of being perceived as a natural fun challenge is perceived as an evil ploy to delay them from attaining the fabled yet untrue and long since lost position of prestige at the "endgame" which surprise surprise - they pay to have done to them. The players are now rushed to the endgame at ludicurous speeds to then have the last 5% of the games entire library of content be paperthin slice fed to them and prolonged by TIMEGATES as much as possible. Which are a HARD form of pacing unlike leveling which is a soft method which allows for faster new conteent acquisition to those players who clear content faster... Leveling allows for a much healthier pace through the game allowing the players to progress at their own speed. I belive the casuals hate this because it suggests that there are others who are faster more proficient than them and thus it makes their inferiority complex greater! This makes the need for a LIE of presigious position at endgame even greater. So they go apeshit if teh game is in any way steered towards a healthy system. Blizzard team long has lost hope their existing playerbase - which isnt populated by the smartest of players by now since most real gamers seen whats going on and left long ago - observing the mess with a mix of cringe and anger at a destroyed hobby from a distance. Blizzard would have to take financial losses to repair this game, they are not willing to do that ever. They want all the money, and this will result in them getting none of the money quite soon. Dragonflight WILL FAIL despite initial small bump in player numbers which will be screamed at everyone as proof of the game turning a new leaf... It wont... It did nothing to solve the fundamental core issues with the games structure. All it did was make things worse and worse. Sped up leveling even more, boosted gear acquisition, made things easier, made faction choice not matter as well as making as many other things not matter as possible. Is there any confusion then.. why is the game feeling hollow and pointless? Why acquire gear when you can get it for free later, why level when you can push a button and be at the endgame. Why raid if you can afk and kill all the bosses, why do dungeons if gear is pointless anyway. Why farm materials when they are cheap as dirt because of the plague of bots. You would have to be an idiot to compete with those for such small market share of profit, so why not buy a token and buy all the materials you need and some achievements while you are at it... which reminds me... WHY EVEN DO ACHIEVEMENTS YOURSELF? There literally isnt a single healthy aspect of the game left, the RMT and the constant pandering to people who fundamentally are not here to play a game has destroyed all aspects of the game. The patient doesnt have enough blood pressure to survive the operation. The game will bleed out or die of the cancer that roils all its organs. The problem is metastatic and incurable. Goodbye WoW. You could have had a better faith than this.
