Welcome to my review of by far the most ambitions home-brew game i’ve reviewed so far! This is the epic new RPG for the original Game Boy, Dragonborne! Made by Spacebot-Interactive.
If you love classic JRPG’s like Dragon Quest or Final Fantasy, mixed with the dungeons of a Zelda game, then you’re sure to get a kick out of this! I’m going to start with an unboxing so you can see the amazing detail that went into this physical release, then we’re going to take a look at the game it’s self and find out what makes this game so special!

Let’s begin Let’s begin by taking a quick look at the packaging before i get into the game it’s self. As you can see an amazing job has been done to recreate the nostalgic feeling of the gameboy packaging, including an amazing piece of artwork on the box, and a nice full colour instruction manual. I especially like all the extra detail that’s been put into the cartridge. They even made sure it’s the exact shade of grey as the original gameboy!
So, what is a brand new RPG for the Gameboy like? Let’s find out!
Straight away after this opening sequence it was apparent that this game was so much more in depth than the other GB studio games i’ve played so far.
I explored around for a bit and found some caves and a dragon to fight, then I stumbled upon the first town and fought some enemies and brought peace back to the town. Did a but of general PRG stuff like shopping and talking to everyone in town before continuing on to explore the rest oft he land.
With every new area I uncovered I was getting more and more impressed by the scope of the game! The game has a great sense of scale and I can tell just how much love and passion must have gone into crafting the world and making everything flow together!
It’s definitely not an easy game though, there were many times where I got stuck trying to solve a puzzle or not being able to find a certain place I needed to go to proceed. I even messaged the game’s developer several times to ask for help! Each time I did so though I ended up figuring it out for myself anyway. So my advice to anyone looking to play is to take it slow, be patient and take notes and you’ll find your way no problem!
The battle system is a typical turn based RPG style system. There’s a few special abilities you can acquire throughout the game such as magic spells and special weapons which do a lot more damage than a regular attack, but are also limited in uses.
Without spoiling anything, the story is very well told as well, with lots of NPC’s that you meet thought the adventure, as well as many letters you can find that have been left by your father, the narrative slowly unravels until you eventually manage to track him down and face the final dragon!
As you’ve been doing throughout this video, the game has some great sprite work and backgrounds. The enemy encounter screens look great too with nice full screen portraits of the characters. The dragons are all fantastic screen filling sprites which really give off an air of power and foreboding.
The amount of time, effort and passion that went into this game is amazing and I can’t wait to see what the Spacebots team work on next!
Also, If you want to see my videos early and get a behind the scenes look then please check out my patreon, I just got 2 more patrons so before we finish here I just want to say a HUGE thank you to Keighey Egerton and Kevin from the Mega Man Cave!
and thats it for this episode, i’ll see you next week for the next one! Goodbye!

I really miss Instruction Manuals - they were like mini art books. I just recently got a cartridge in box of Superstar Saga and Minish cap, and those instruction booklets are like little works of art. Glad to see people still value and appreciate them. Thanks for this video, Retrobreak! I need to look into this game...

One of the things I missed most about old games were the booklets. After purchase of the game, I remember fondly reading the instruction manuals on the train journey home. There would usually be a story synopsis, a few hints/tips/tricks, control layout, sometimes level descriptions, enemy type guides, character bios, and sometimes even a poster or map!

@@derp195, says the person that has the rather ironic username, but, in all seriousness, the Switch was honestly a Hail Mary for Nintendo, even more so than the Game Boy/Game Boy Color, Wii, DS, and 3DS/2DS, and all of its other systems sold either at, or below the level of, the NES/FDS and SNES/NSFC. Moreover, given the increasing amount of mistakes that Nintendo has been making, as well as the video game industry as a whole, it is wiser, as well as easier, for people to make new video games for simpler and easier retro video game platforms, especially for small, and/or new, video game companies, as those older systems still have exploits and tricks that can be achieved that have yet to be discovered by people.

@@RetroBreak I was given a emulator and rom version to use as unfortunately my gameboy had died and I have no recording equipment that I can use on hand helds. It must of taken me 7-8 tries at least to do that mini game, even when you know the locations its a little glitchy getting them to appear and 30 seconds is barely enough time to collect them. I admittedly used a save state to retry as I didn't want to have o run all the way back to the fishing spot again to earn more money. I did have issues with the sheer amount of luck based puzzles causing delays and there was actually one (the first or second button in the chest ) I completed and didn't realise it opened the door. I spent the next ten minutes going through every possible combination attempting to figure out what it did until I checked Spacebot Interactives guide for confirmation to make sure it hadn't bugged out. The only only other four that really stuck in my mind were the intial forest puzzle with the invisible path which I kept missing when I checked for one, finding the dynamite, the two room puzzle with the 3 boxes in the 3rd dungeon and finally waiting for the princess which I did by accident whilst ansering a text. I must admit I dispised the combat system by the end, after Rykard did All Seeing Eyes 5 times in a row in the first fight I pretty much lost my cool and got a somewhat bitter afterwards. I have far more respect for you completing it on a hand held without the time saving features of the emulator.

I wish you didn't mention the dragon being the opening point of the game. That's kind of a huge spoiler. I wasn't ready fir that. Mayve in the future word it in mystery as if there's kind of a spin, or just that you thought it was almost over at a certain point than it really opened up

How is it dodgey? they sell high quality games, and the name change makes sense as the term “dragonborn” is trademarked by ZeniMax Media Inc. a quick search and you will find that the game isn’t currently available as they are updating the game to make a sort of DX version.

@@RetroBreak I don't accept that excuse, they never should have released without color support in the first place. It should have been a high priority. It just means the blame goes to GB Studio instead of this dev Hell, they should have aimed for Super Gameboy and did what Pokemon Yellow did and used that for it's color pallets, at bare minimum

@@NeoTechni I'm sorry but this is the stupidest complaint I've ever heard for a game. "hOw DaRe YoU uSe An EnGinE tHaT's StIlL bEiNg AcTiVeLy DeVeLoPeD aNd ImProVeD uPoN?!" And besides, even if it weren't a limitation of the engine, the developer's choice of the game's art style is *entirely* their own choice. There are plenty of games that go for the classic GB aesthetic *intentionally* because that's what their developers wanted those games to look like. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that.
