The scene with the time machine, Dirk and Daphne is in the original game. The scene where Dirk is trying to grab Daphne as they are falling is from the second level.

Don Bluth, the animator in charge of this, did start at Disney, so it would look like that. He also had a bunch of really good animated films in the 80's and 90's, like the Secret of NIMH and All Dogs Go To Heaven.
