Daphne's attitude is so funny, it's as if so many knights have tried to rescue her, now she presents the key like a "Price is Right" item and reacts to the knight's moves like if it was part of a tv game show.

I have a theory that she was never actually in danger. The way she reacts and gives insight makes me 100% believe she set all this up just to find someone brave or something. I mean the way the rooms are set up are less like a defensive castle and more like a step by step trial or labyrinth. I mean I know it's a video game, and the point is she's an object of fascination, but she is definitely too well put together to be in any kind of danger. That gold is hers and she uses it to play a sick game of suitors.

Same, some of this was absolute bullshit with the timing, even when you knew what to do. It's funny how you can tell how much of a novelty FMV games were- when Dragon's Lair first released kids were lined up, snaking through the entire arcade, then 9 years later when SEGA CD released and a bunch of companies dumped these weird experimental FMV games onto that platform and other CD based consoles, games LIKE Dragon's Lair, they were panned for being awful games, and mediocre movies. Kinda cool though how "movie games" have come around a lot since then, the first big one I remember was Metal Gear Solid, but of course there were others like it that just weren't very popular, stuff like Enemy Zero or D. And now there's games like Until Dawn and Detroit Become Human, finding a really great middle ground between a cinematically-presented story, and enjoyable gameplay where your decisions change the plot.

I've always liked Dragon's Lair for being a cartoon video game where everybody seems to kind of realize there's something less than completely serious about reality. And I've always kind of liked Princess Daphne for feeling like she's an in-game actress who knows exactly how stupid this role is and is treating the entire thing as a source for future audition material.

@Koriander Yander It was a laserdisc game that had interactive gameplay. Either you give the right command, and proceed toward the ending, or the wrong command, and Dirk dies in one of many different ways. The death scenes actually account for most of the animation that had to be produced. The game had a sequel, Time Warp, and a spin-off Space Ace. As well, some other game companies produced similar content like Mad Dog McCree.

Daphne's parents wanted to make sure she only married the best possible nobleman in the kingdom, so they had her live in a castle full of treasure (treasure that was for her and her future husband's kingdom), then they bought a dragon from a wizzard, probably Merlin, to act as a guard dog for Daphne and the treasure. The dragon would kill all who were not strong or smart enough to slay him, but Daphne was never in any danger as the dragon's job was to protect her. Then finally the bravest and wisest of all the knights in the kingdom killed the dragon and thus passed the test set down by Daphne's parents. And the knight didn't just save Daphne, he also removed a magic sword from a large diamond, this sword was likely Excalibur. It can therfore be argued that Daphne's father is/was King Arthur and in his old age had set up the entire Dragon's Lair quest simply as a way to find the man who could remove the sword by virtue and thus inherit the kingdom and marry his daughter. This also explains why there is so much magic in the quest as King Arthur was friends with Merli likely helped build all the magic puzzles.

"Seeeve me!" When I first played this game, it was in a CD-ROM multimedia pack we got on sale at the department store. It was the 320x200 very pixellated MS-DOS port. We were pretty stoked that it was essentially a cartoon that you were playing through, even though it was obviously brutal and very short sequences to enjoy before you had to frantically press something. But there were many funny moments that my brothers and I remember. My youngest brother's favourite bit was when the king lizard thing donks Dirk on the head and he goes "Hmph!"

1980s fantasy was inspired by Conan the Barbarian, Fafhrd & Gray Mouser, Tolkien presented in a fashion that was far more nuanced in scope compared to the Peter Jackson films, etc., where most characters were normal people, and he most powerful were simply "heroes." Fantasy for the current generation is based on 80s & 90s fantasy with superhero-level powers mixed in as the norm, not the exception.

@@princesspeachfan100 Well who knows. I respected the idea how princess peach was the damsel in distress. It was just a character trait of hers. I don't understand why people have to reflect on fantasy characters so much thinking it's how the world views women or something. Women (as well as men) are dynamic and unique. Everyone is different. Just as there are women who are damsels to be protected, there are those that aren't. Just like there are men who are strong and confident knights in armour, there are those who are insecure and timid who only wants a hug to night cry before they sleep. And I think that is ok. Idk, each to their own. Everyone can like what they want. Which means I can like what I like too. It harms nobody.

I have always loved this game. I remember spending all day one summer on my old Xbox 360 trying to complete it and when I finally did, I unlocked the little helmet for my Xbox avatar and equipped it immediately. I was so proud

1980s fantasy was inspired by Conan the Barbarian, Fafhrd & Gray Mouser, Tolkien presented in a fashion that was far more nuanced in scope compared to the Peter Jackson films, etc., where most characters were normal people, and he most powerful were simply "heroes." Just like there are men who are strong and confident knights in armour, there are those who are insecure and timid who only wants a hug to night cry before they sleep. And I think that is ok.
