Drag Radials vs Slicks: Which You Need & Why

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Scott is back to talk about what it takes to be faster on a drag strip. When it comes to drag time, you want to do everything you can to reduce your ET, meaning more grip on the launch plays a major role. We’re talking tires and which type of compound you want if you are going to run depending on your driving style, racing setup, and more.

It's funny you bring up Dwayne Guthridge and his notch back. I remember seeing that car at E-Town quite a few times and it launching so hard that all 4 tires would leave the ground when the rear bumper hit the track.

Good video, but you should have gotten into the wheel/tire sizes and how the radials give you those larger wheel diameters.

As an owner of a muscle truck. I can firmly say the nitto nt555 r2 is the "worst" drag radial in terms of all out drag time and grip. But it is the "best" street radial. Ive been caught in rain storms (above 60 degrees f mind you.) and I put about 10k miles annual on them they last and they do well. Even drove in sub 40 degree weather and they do fine. A mickey t can't do that. However a nitto won't trap like a m/t will. For me it's the nitto all day. Should I get some side money though? I'll get another set of rears for those bracket days!

@@ZackNakazora1 well I think you need to get your suspension right because I've put down some big power on those nt555r2 on a street 20" wheel setup. I was pleasantly surprised with them. They're literally my favorite radial for street duty but yes the et street r is one of the best at the track.

At what point would you switch from radials to slicks? I mean as far as I know there are no radials in TF, FC or Pro Mod.

I like the Hoosier DR2 28" x 16" They dead hook on the track(1.5 60')and drive perfect even with lower tire pressures. Just not for when it's raining.

I race a Vega that's not tubbed, so I have very little room for tires. Hoosier 235 DR2's are so far the best I've tried (including M/T street SS, street R, and Hoosier Quick Time Pro). Also running 1.5 60'. I got used to changing when arriving and leaving the track when I ran slicks, so not being able to use them in the rain doesn't bother me.
