  • @updlate4756

    @updlate4756

    2 жыл бұрын

    The difference in weight makes a pretty significant difference. The Ford just has more power to overcome the extra 500 lbs. Shave 500 lbs off the Mach-E and improve its aero at higher speeds, and the Mach-E's acceleration increases off the line, with lower power requirements to move the vehicle helping to reduce heat production and allow that 5 second boost period to be extended. Ford obviously didn't think it was that important; as few actual customers will be running quarter miles. Plus the car is now sold out for 7 months, so customers don't seem to care all that much. Tesla's powertrains aren't as superior as what people claim. Their main strength is in the aerodynamics and weight of their vehicles which also helps with efficiency. The better efficiency allows for a smaller battery. The weight reduction is accomplished by using more aluminum in the chassis and body, and through the smaller capacity battery. It isn't exactly rocket science... as much as the Mythos of Musk would have the internet believe. EVs just aren't that complicated...

    @@mt2nv1 Weight has little impact on aerodynamics at high speed, and it's the air resistance that increases exponentially as the vehicle moves faster. That's based on the drag coefficient x front surface area of the car. The Mach-E certainly has an issue with drag coefficient. Weight impacts rolling resistance and energy required to accelerate. It also means that the car may not regen as efficiently. Due to higher energy requirements to accelerate the car, the powertrain is likely losing more energy through resistive heat losses in the electronics and wiring.

    Next test: take them for six or seven drag races and see which one poops out first... It's not going to be the Tesla. Ford is going through the same growing pains that Tesla did many years ago when their vehicles were having trouble managing heat after one hot lap. Everybody keeps saying silly things like "When the competition comes..."... Except the competition seems to be a half a decade behind Tesla, and that is for some of the best case comparisons. We are in the very beginning phases of a massive societal change when it comes to energy and transportation. All of the OEMs seem to have situational paralysis and appear to be incapable of jumping in the deep end of the pool, so to speak. They are barely treading water at best. The automotive landscape will be profoundly different by the end of this decade. We'll see lots of Chinese made electric vehicles dwelling majority of the transportation landscape. Those who look like they are large automakers today will represent a small minority of the overall automotive landscape and companies like Toyota, Honda, Nissan, general motors, etc will be a small fraction of their current cells. Furthermore, many of those companies, especially GM, are currently a small fraction of what they were just a mere few decades ago. GM used to own 50% or more of the automotive market in the US. Now it is down in the teens. By 2030 it will be in the low single digit percentages, if they make it at all. That's my prediction. It is not the biggest who wins. It is the most adaptive and most agile and the most innovative who will win. GM doesn't seem to be doing any of that. Ford at least is giving it a shot. We'll see how it goes.

    I don’t think OWMs can compete with Tesla on function. OEMs are too heavy corporate mentality. Their top priority is producing high volumes of cars to move cash. Tesla is ironically larger in market value, yet they still operate like a boutique auto maker. They are constantly tweaking their cars to make them better. I’m so eager to see all the goodies the put in MY 2.0, from Austin and Grunheude. I don’t think they will be happy to just push out more of the same model Y. I think they will want to push the envelope. Maybe carbon wrapped motors in the performance. Maybe dramatically lighter cars, with the smaller 4680 packs, maybe magnetic ride control, and some other really cool features to keep them in front of all challengers. Most of these things would have minimal cost impact to Tesla, but they would dramatically improve this great car.

Keep in mind to that team didn't have model y to bench mark it against until mid 2020. They leased model 3s for the engineer's starting in late 2017. So likely Ford didn't expect the model y to have such a quick perf variant. I bet they thought they could just slap another large drive unit up front and call it good. Instead they should've worked on getting more out of the regular awd er like tesla can do with the $2,000 upgrade ota. Those motors don't draw enough constant c rate to kill the pack's as quickly. 🤔

    Mach-E GTP w/ glass roof and co-pilot 360 is $3100 cheaper after tax credit... not $1k. Bit of extra tax and interest on the Tesla as well. From the race, the cars are head to head up to about 80 mph, which for most people buying these cars is about as fast as they're typically going to take them. That's pretty impressive by the Ford actually with that extra weight. The Ford's heavier weight is harder to get moving, and the weaker aero is harder to power through wind resistance beyond 70 mph, both of which adds up to heat in the battery, which is likely why the Ford has to throttle after 5 seconds. Put the same powertrain into a lighter and more aerodynamic chassis, and not only would the Ford be faster off the line, but that 5 seconds could would be extended. I imagine the Ford would wipe the floor with the Tesla. The Ford would also see a significant efficiency bump and longer range. Some tests have already shown the Ford ahead of Tesla on real world range highway range tests, but that's due to the Ford's larger battery. The Tesla adds miles back faster at DC Fast chargers due to its smaller battery and better efficiency. Both cars have their advantages, the Y has autopilot, better weight, better efficiency, is larger, and has sentry mode. Range is about equal as I mentioned. The GTP is the better driver's car. It has performance seats that will hold the driver in place around curves, an adaptive suspension for a more compliant ride and better cornering, and it has a quieter cabin with less road noise. Ford doesn't have Elon Musk, which is typically considered a positive. ;) Just sayin'. Ford did a fine job on this vehicle, and all the talk of Tesla powertrain superiority really shows for what it really is here; it's just talk. Tesla's real superiority is in weight and aero. Aero was possible by elongating the vehicle (hence the larger vehicle) and using a short (height) and pointy front end with steep rake in the windshield. The weight advantage was accomplished through Tesla's heavy use of aluminum in the chassis and body panels. The improved efficiency resulting from those two factors allows Tesla to reduce the capacity of the battery pack to shave weight there as well. The problem with the aluminum is that there simply isn't enough to go around and recycled aluminum will run out with more of it being sequestered in vehicles over long periods of time. New aluminum (not recycled) on a per ton basis using current refining and processing techniques generates approximately 6x more GHG emissions than steel. Due to the limited supply of aluminum and the huge demand to help reduce weight in EVs, the price of the metal has rapidly risen since March, now sitting near all time highs since June. If every OEM decided to use aluminum, we could see aluminum prices break new records and never come back down to Earth.

Over 20% less efficient range based on battery capacity and the epa official mpge ratings, charges slower than a 2016 model s can. Doesn't have any break through tech onboard, have to go to dealers for updates so far. With over 35% of all Ford's dealer network currently not even supporting working on their ev lineup. Plus it has been recalled multiple times already for some of the very same issues Ford execs publicly mocked tesla for late last year. Karma eh? 🤔

    @@lrod8692 body kits&aero bits, hoods like the Shelby mach gt at sema had, wheels, brake upgrades, seats, floor mats, tow hitches all the usual stuff. Maybe someday actual motor&inverter tuning but that will void the powertrain warranty. Like a tune can do to combustion engined vehicle's now. Magna in Austria actually made better drop in motors for the jaguar I pace supposedly they got almost 20% more efficiency. And over 100hp more at each axle. But man those type of upgrades are expensive right now. But soon the money will be there for companies to step in with parts and uogrades. 🤔

    I like both of these cars and probably am going to buy one of them in the next 2-3 years. Might splurge and do a model S, but I don't really need one, just thinking about it. I am impressed that Ford is even in the ball-park tbh, I thought it would take them at least another 3-4 years to be even slightly comparable to Tesla. I think Tesla is still in front, but in 2-3 years, Ford might close the gap.
