DRAFT HORSES: Beautiful Haying Weather & Hauling Firewood!

Today we are doing several different odd jobs with the draft horses!! We finally have some beautiful haying weather and Brenda is raking hay. Unfortunately we had some breakdowns with our baler. Our Amish hired man, William, is also splitting and hauling firewood to help get us ready for winter!

Enjoyed the video of Brenda driving the horses, the beautiful farm and hay fields. I understand why you want to have Baron castrated. My neighbors had a stallion. They built a high fence to keep him away from the mare when she was in heat. He was able to jump the fence, and injured himself in the process. You are making the right decision.

Stallions are a risk when out in public, horse pulls in this sense. They also don’t get to live a “normal” horse live. Once gelded he will get to safely go out with the herd. It’s much easier and safer all around.

People don't know. I lived near a horse stable and have always been a stocky strong guy. One day I got a call could I come help them, I said sure and went down. Their quarter horse stallion (who would be dwarfed by Baron) was having a bad day and they needed to move him. I was on the left side of the halter, a guy as big as me was in the right side and two guys had lead ropes. It was pretty scary. That horse was usually pretty docile, that day not at all. I managed not to get kicked ( I never realized before the range of kicking abilities a horse has in front hooves) between the four of us we could pretty much keep him from rearing much but letting go and getting out of the pen was quite the ordeal. My one and ONLY time dealing hands on with a stallion. When the hormones kick in all bets are off. As trained as Jim's horses are I understand him never 100% trusting them, they're huge potentially dangerous creatures and you never know what's going on in their heads. By the way I'm also not a fan of getting horse bites, regardless of the horse's intentions, if you know you know. Don't judge.

Some people don't understand how difficult it is having a stud (Bull, Ram Buck or a Boar) on the farm or even animals in general. That is why back in the 1960's farm dynamics changed the family farm to corporate farming and the loss of every farm raising animals. I had hogs and cattle and a few sheep in the 70's and no one else for several miles around had but a few to raise for their own meat. A big credit to you for carrying on farming the way you do. I enjoy seeing you each time working the horses and the knowledge you have. OK people hit that thumbs up!!!!

Hello Brenda and Jim, wanted to say did not read the comments yesterday, generally I watch your videos on our TV and commenting is difficult. However today I wanted to comment on the issue of Baron and your decision. I agree with you whole heartedly! You are doing what you can to still have the wonderful genes that Baron carries for the Suffolk breed while maintaining your operation on the farm as best possible. We had a stud for a number of years but our plans to have the breeding operation we wanted to have did not materialize. Keeping him as a non-breeding stud was not fair to him. Having his mother and half sister on the property caused issues of another type as I am sure you can understand. Our stud was a quarter horse and Baron’s attitude reminds me so much of our guy. We nick named him Fonz because he had that laid back attitude that “the Fonz” had on Happy Days😊. Long story short we had him gelded at age 6 or 7 and he has been a continued to be a wonderful horse for the family. Also we had our mare artificially inseminated and the process went very well (granted it is not an inexpensive process). Not sure what the costs are from your end but it certainly is a viable way to keep Baron’s line continued. Good Luck! And I love watching Brenda drive and her commentary ! You are both a pleasure to watch. Take care and God Bless!

Hi Jim & Brenda. Thanks for sharing your time with us! Your decision regarding Baron is nobody’s business, but yours. You have presented very logical reasons for why you are planning to geld him and that should be more than enough for anyone. An uncut male horse, cow, pig, etc can be such a worry/potential liability on the farm.

I believe your decision for Baron is a good thing. You can preserve the good genetics and have less worries. Some bonuses of artificial insemination: a safer experience for the mare and stallion (avoid kicking and aggression); the semen collected can be divided into multiple samples; semen is cheaper to ship than transporting animals.

@@chips4974 Chips, I fully agree about the anonymity. People vent raw feelings on social media that they would never express to a person's face. It allows one to stir up their worst impulses instead of moderating them in order to get along with others. I've thought maybe each social media account should be registered to a real person. Also, if we had to pay a subscription fee, the number of abusive users would drop. Best regards to you.

I’m from Kentucky, the race horse business in Kentucky uses artificial breeding, they don’t take chances with the expensive stallions being kicked by mares. It just makes more sense for you and what your doing with the horses. I can see why you don’t want to take a stallion out to public events, Baron was raised with the male horses on your farm, he may turn into a different horse around strange horses!

Stallions are stallions. It takes special knowledge and experience to handle one. Finding a qualified baby sitter can be sometimes exasperating. Not to mention the stress of having a stallion mixed with other horses doesn't bode well. Gelding is your best option. Brenda....you looked like an "old timer" raking that hay. Farm life requires decisions that are sometimes not popular or are also difficult for the farm operator to make but must be made for the betterment of the whole. I thoroughly enjoy your videos and look forward for the next one every time.

Maybe if you could put oil on some of your equipment that would help to hear the grass crackle under Neath your machine, like Brenda suggested!

Brenda, now I know the secret to your firm tone lady arms, driving a draft pair. I have 4 horses, that give my lady arms a workout just grooming & giving scratches, but mine have lost that tone that you still have. Also, I love seeing you two work as a team on getting farm chores complete. Thanks for showing us working horses with Brenda this day. Just curious, who took the film footage of you working the fields?

Here in Australia the small tornadoes are called by the aboriginal name willy willy and in summer they are everywhere. They are more or less harmless but pull up some choking dust at times. Thanks for the video's Brenda and Jim I watch for them constantly.

I was amazed to see Jim working with a stallion in pair or alone. Chapeau till now, no accidents occurred. Get rid of the potential catastrofe, a pitty for Baron's balls.

Totally love watching Brenda rake the hay by herself. I feel like she has learned so much & helps you do a lot of stuff everyday, Jim. Since she has been retired she looks like she is enjoying everyday at home just working the farm with the horses. Great job, Brenda. Jim, you have to do what is best for your farm & keeping peace/safe with the animals, even if it's castrating Baron. It's a good decision & works for you & Brenda, SO.... Never mind what other people say, they have no idea how hard it is to run the kinda farm you & Brenda have!! Sorry to those who don't understand but , this is a good decision on your part ...God Bless
