Anyone who understands the nature of horses notes the apparent difference in temperament between the heavy and light breeds. This is likely the result of how and frequency that the draft types are used.

I have friend who i use to hang around all he had was horses and they would go just hearing the load hook can always tell the teem who do lot of work

Gotta love all the armchair animal enthusiasts who're down here thinking that anything other than a horse sitting in a pasture whiling it's life away is abuse and dont understand that this is a CONTEST for horses who are BRED and TRAINED for this and are very obviously enjoying this. I respect your opinion, but make sure that it is informed and intelligent before trying to tell people who definitely know more about this that it's wrong because you FEEL that way.

I don't like the blinders or the bearing rein there, you can see it's hurting the horses mouth and that man shouldn't be pulling back with all his weight on a sensitive mouth

Craig Shipp apparently you don't know anything about the weal fare of horses bc bearing reins are absolutely unBEARABLE. it's ridiculous to have that much pressure on a horses mouth for the amount of time. Smh

A once sensitive mouth. Draft breeds often develop a less sensitive mouth in difficult to control situations. These teams are conditioned to pull in contests and as you can see, they rush as soon as they believe they are connected to the sled. The more I watch these affairs, the less I like how the animals treated.

There is more to a team than the ability to pull. The traditional working teams of yesteryear that were employed in a variety of ways under varying conditions had to be tractable for the sake of both efficiency and safety. Thankfully, the draft breeds tend to be more tractable than their saddle counterparts.

That's too much to ask of a fine animal . I'd never enter my horse in such a contest.

FIRST pull is 8 minutes in, prior to that is elevator music and horse brushing

While shoes do protect the hooves, that huge cleat in the back is for grip.

Did no body else notice the horse nose bleeding? That should've been checked out. And I think it's ridiculous to use bearing reins in a pulling competition. Not only does it hurt the horse, they can't pull as efficiently.

I have and one drop of blood here is enough to get disqualified. Also those rotten check reins stop the horses to use their whole body in pulling such a heavy load. They can't even put their noses down. These people must really hate their horses.

Craig, may I suggest that you chunk this video up into a shorter story with a narrative? Introduce the teams and their owners and why they compete, explain about the weights they are pulling ( which looked to be 3 or 4 tonnes) and who was the eventual winner.

It looks to me like most of these horses are Belgians or Belgian crosses. I don't think pulling contests are abusive, but like most things we do with horses, there are things here that are done because they are traditional and probably need to be changed. Like the overcheck rein. Really not needed with a horse pulling a heavy load. Did nobody read Black Beauty? The other thing is training. These horses can be trained to respond better to their driver, they should not be dragging their driver around and him pulling with all his weight to get them to slow down. They do enjoy their jobs and they are bred to do this kind of work, but they are horses and need to be treated with care and consideration. They remind me of human powerlifters! I wonder if any of them can do this work without shoes?

People who bitch about this are so far removed from food production they have no idea why people do this and just see it as abuse. When i was young we had tractors but some jobs in winter were still done with horses.

Craig Shipp That's the excuse always used. The tail can be braided up out of the way when working, leaving the horse with its natural tail for the many more hours when it isn't working. A full tail is better for the horse but means more work for the owner.

How can the poor horse swat the flies away from it without it's tail? If you need to hack off part of it's body to make 'work safer' then maybe you shouldn't be making the horse do this at all. How would you like if someone ripped the scalp off your head so you can't grow anymore hair? I mean sure, you won't have to risk the hair blocking your vision so it's safer, and you'll never have to maintain it again so that's a plus! Good luck dealing with the sun and everything else that likes to land on your head though, at least you can put a hat on and swat insects away with your hands, a horse can't.

Yes, docking just because can be cruel, but with draft horses if can get caught up in the gear and make it very painful for the horse at times if that happens. It makes it easier for the horse to get tacked up in general.

God I feel sorry for these horses..wouldn't wanna be them

Most like it its somthing fun for them youll se on farm foal chasing the team and they are friends with farmer its like some dogs love to fetch ive had some dog woh play fetch not because i like throwing a stick but because they like horse that dosent like working for you wont. The horse thinks his farmer is leader of his heard

those poor horses! and what the hell is up with the bearing rein? they cant pull without their head and its uncomfortable to be pulled on the mouth like that Im sure. and when a horse is nervous, don't yell at him like your on drugs. and Im sure the useless blinders aren't helping at all. and honestly, ti just don't see the point of pulling contests. why work your horse making him sweat under the yolk like there's no tomorrow for no reason. has anyone else noticed the sweat dripping from underneath the collar? its just tearing up their body even more probable shortening his life span. ever wonder why dressage horses retire so fast and racehorses die early? because they're worked way too much and it wears out their body and usually at a young age when their bones haven completely formed. these are just idiots who don't know how to handle a horse.

I so love draft horses, just huge incredible animals. All of the horses there were beautiful, however, I personally don't like weight pulls. Once I saw a video of a team of Clydesdales pulling and one of the horses collapsed and died on the spot. Suffered a heart attack from too much weight. Personally, I see these type of competitions as abuse. The same with rodeos, show jumping, and horse racing. All of these activities are detrimental to the animals but stupid humans don't care. All they care about is winning cash, stupid ribbons, or trophies. I'm all about what's better for the animals. Just my personal opinion.

If you overdo it then yes, it is abuse, clear and simple. However, most of these conpetitions you mentioned started as harmless exhibitions of strength, speed and general prowess and have evolved onto become what we know them of today. It really isn't the sport that is abusive, its the specific trainer, handler and/or practices used on the horse.

This isnt work, this isnt a horse working on a farm or participating in a sport. This is people punching their horses to their limit to see how much they can pull which puts immense strain on the body for little to no reason. I was a bit harsh, I was an obnoxious little prick two years ago but my opinion hasn't changed.

@@phoenixc7245 also watch the video. Notice the mouths of these horses. Do you have any idea how sensitive a horses mouth is? Even heavy horses have sensitive mouths they are just less reactionary in nature. They are opening their mouths like that to get away from the pain being inflicted on their mouth. And while yes, a horse has a bloody nose and yes, it should be tended to, knowing how horses are and the fact that you can see the blood coming from a small wound in the nostril rather than the nasal cavity itself, I dobt think it's that big of a deal.

@@sadiemorley6998 Horses very rarely show any signs of pain, it's in their nature. In the past weak horse (horse in pain) was the first one to be chosen by a predator. All they can do is run from pain.

@@Zeroness0 that is blatantly untrue, and if you've ever been around horses for a period of time you'd know better. Horses are very sensory animals, and exhibit clear signs of aggression at even minimal injuries or pain. If you think they dont exhibit signs at pain or injury then you just aren't looking.
