@@spencerwells1328 in the Cola realm the there were many regional variants. Now most people only think of 2 really but at one point almost every soda jerk had a special recipe. The reason why I cited RC is Dr. Pepper, A&W, Canada Dry and RC Cola started in my neck of the woods within decades of each other. Rhett and Link always talk about Pepsi being the pride of the Carolinas. Well we New Englanders are pretty proud of RC.

Josh WAS right, but Dr. Pepper owns A&W. They changed the formula of A&W after they heard Josh was on to them, so the taste isn't the same anymore.

I’ve always been told Dr. Pepper is like a Disaronno soda (always told disaronno specifically not amaretto in general but maybe) because they’re both so cherry and almond forward, and Disaronno is already nearing the 23 flavors from the apricot kernel (where much of the cherry/almond flavors come from) and 17 fruits and herbs, or whatever it is

I have this conspiracy theory that Josh destroyed all his taste buds with creatine or mass builder shakes and he's now completely unable to taste any food. He hides it very well with his extensive culinary skill and knowledge, so he makes food that tastes good. He just can't actually taste it himself. I wish I could cite more sources for my conspiracy theory but I guess you'll have to do your own research.

Had them all in the fridge, tried it out of curiosity. Even got out a scale to make sure the ratio was exactly 2:1. In my opinion it's not the same, A&W comes through really strong. It's not a terrible mix, but not Dr Pepper.

I never liked root beer. It has sarsaparilla in it which is also a key ingredient in black licorice. And black licorice is nasty. But I’ve always liked Dr. Pepper. Strange thing happened when I just drank Dr. Pepper by itself and not after eating. I noticed the sarsaparilla flavor, which led me here. Now I’m questioning all of my life decisions 😫

This can’t possibly be right since the primary flavor of Dr. Pepper is Cherry, and neither root beer or cola have that flavor.

Love Dr. Pepper, but root beer literally makes me nauseous, so I'm skeptical.

I'm watching the South Park episode called "The Poor Kid" with the Agnostic foster family. They only drink Dr. Pepper, because they don't know if it's cola or Rootbeer. 😅

Should have had coworkers blind taste test these to see if he was right

Nope because math is false. A&W and Dr.Peppee are sister companies so for his cola and root beer theory to very true needs to nix Coke for true sister RC Cola

My buddy used to make home made Dr peppers. He would take different sodas and mix them together. It was spot on. Just coke and root beer doesn't do it. You need cherry and vanilla and a couple other notes to get it right.

Dr pepper was actually invented in Virginia. The guy was working at the pharmacy and was smitten for the druggist"s daughter. The father put an end to their relationship and fired the young man who went on to call the drink that he made to impress dr peppers daughter after him.

Okay I wish I was still talking to my ex because I have no idea what carousel cola is, but I love doing half root beer and half dr pepper as a beverage and my ex always made fun of me for it.

I was at work the other day and we had a half used can of root beer for a float, so I mixed it with my Coca-Cola and it did not taste like Dr Pepper to me

Sounds like a great episode of GMM for a blind taste test.

I used to say that Dr. Pepper tasted like root beet mixed with coke since I was a kid, but people kept disagreeing with me.

This sounds like something John Green,Dr. Pepper aficionado,should test.

I don’t own an MS but I have access to one and I could probably see if we could allow a student to get a profile from each of the three. Wouldn’t be any time soon I think it would be harder than just extracting them though. So many compounds that might end up in a solvent but not another. Also tons of sugar. Very long column needed

If you could do it in parts, remove some known compounds then pass it through the column and do it again but remove some other parts and do it multiple times and then put all the data toghether

That's why it's called a multi-spectrometer it should be easy enough, when access is to it is gained, to pass coke through then root beer though it may not be A&W most likely it would have back then been what they call sassafras or sarsaparilla root beer, because that is the oldest *root beer* drink that was called a *"soft drink"* no alcohol all the way back to the early 1400s but who knows for sure, people have been making different kinds of drinks from seeds and roots and plants and flowers for along time. But I'd be willing to bet that it was sarsaparilla and not necessarily root beer as it is known today because most people haven't even heard of it before at least not since I was a kid drinking it but I can definitely believe coca cola syrup and sassafras would definitely taste like Dr Pepper. Because I always thought Dr. Pepper tasted familiar .

It’s called a Mass Spectrometer. Have over 25 years operating magnetic sector Gas Chromatography Mass Spec, low resolution mass spec, triple quadrupole mass spec and negative ion electron impact mass spec. You would have to do a number of mass spec analysis using both volatile and semi-volatile methodologies. See EPA methods 8260 and 8270

I have a conspiracy theory that Josh is a robot because that's definitely not what that tastes like. Dr. Pepper is quite fruity and some of its major notes are plum and vanilla.

@@Dead_Goat What's funny is, the cherry and amaretto notes you detect might be one and the same flavor component - almond extract smells and tastes like maraschino cherries, and is often used as cherry flavoring. That being said, that's definitely one of the flavors that comes through fairly strong for me!

According to Dr. Pepper the 23 flavors are cola, cherry, licorice, amaretto (almond, vanilla, blackberry, apricot, blackberry, caramel, pepper, anise, sarsaparilla, ginger, molasses, lemon, plum, orange, nutmeg, cardamon, all spice, coriander juniper, birch and prickly ash.

If Dr Pepper has 12 botanicals and coke has 11… you simply can’t just add them and claim the 23 of Dr Pepper is those combined. Obviously they both will share some flavors initially.
