The biggest part that wasn't mentioned, is that you can find Dr Pepper on both Coca Cola and Pepsi fountains anywhere you go. That subsidizing to the top 2 makers really helps them.

Back in the early 2000's at several of the Domino's Pizza (corporate stores) I worked at as a delivery driver in far west Houston metro area, we noticed that our customers preferred the Dr. Pepper 20 oz bottle drinks more than any other soda flavors. So much that eventually (as the story was told to us) that Coca-Cola demanded that Domino's drop Dr. Pepper as one of the choices for our customers and replaced it with Mr. Pibbs (which was supposed to be Coca-Cola's version of Dr. Pepper). Our regular customers were NOT pleased with that change.

Dublin wasn't the original bottling plant, they just made it with Pure Cane Sugar the longest using the old recipe. I use to grab a bunch of them when I would travel through Dublin on my way to college in Alpine from East Texas around Tyler. Then I started to see them in stores around Tyler. I knew they had an agreement with Snapple to not sell outside the 3 counties around Dublin but thought it might have changed. Well, it didn't and they were quickly sued out of the rights to produce Dr Pepper. I felt bad for them but they did violate their agreement with Snapple in which they signed.

I worked at a bottling company that produced Dr Pepper, among other sugary fizzy concoctions. I can tell you that while I couldn't tell you what the 23 flavors are, I do know that the concentrate they used was straight phosphoric acid that came in a tiny box. Each box would yield 10,000 units (2 litre bottles), and the stuff had a cloying, sickly sweet odor that would stay in your nose for days. I couldn't drink DP for years after I left that place.

Dr Pepper has been huge regionally in Texas since it has its roots here. Most fast food or restaurant businesses sign exclusive deals with either Coca Cola or Pepsi to use their fountain drinks, but in Texas it's common for them to allow the option for the owner to also provide Dr Pepper. Because of how popular it is, the store will have a noticeable decline in reviews/business if they don't offer Dr Pepper.

Fun fact: Keurig is not only the #1 single serve coffee maker, but it's ALSO the #1 single serve. ... Alcohol drink maker... (I think mostly because nobody else does that) Yup. Lo and behold to my surprise when I stumbled across and was gifted a Keurig Drink machine. It's legit... Like, you buy these disposable recyclable pods that contain the alcohol and drink mix concentrate that is then mixed with water and depending on the drink, carbonated (it has a refillable carbonation tank thing inside). I've had a lot of varieties but my favorites I think is the Tom Collins (a gin and lemon/lime citrus soda based drink), strawberry margarita (it's on the rocks ofc) tho their aloha one is better imo, long island iced tea (surprisingly accurately potent and smooth for the size of the drink capsule). It's small enough to fit on a coffee table or counter, and is just disturbingly good. You put the capsule in, put an appropriately sized glass under, hit a button and bam, done, clean it occasionally. Oh and it does have other settings you can adjust but I haven't had a need to. And the cherry on top is it comes with a lock accessory that allows you to lock it when not using it so children and the like cant use it behind your back I recommend looking it up for the amusement at least

I believe that Dr Pepper is bottled at both Coke & Pepsi plants depending on region, which may be why a lot of people think this. Growing up, I had Dr Pepper once and I recall not liking the sweet taste of it. It looked like Coke so I was expecting a similar flavour. I don't recall ever drink it again till I was much older. Funny thing is, I worked at a bar for a long time and we had this popular drink called a "Dr Pepper" which was Amaretto mixed with Coke/Pepsi. That was a drink I used to have quite often. I always wondered why it was called that and one of my coworkers said "Duh, coz it tastes just like Dr. Pepper!" So I went and bough a can of Dr Pepper, and to my surprise, it tasted exactly like an Amaretto and Coke!!! Haha All those times I had the Amaretto and Cokes, I was drinking a similar tasting drink as that drink I didn't like as a kid! :P

I think you missed a very important bit of their success. In 1963 they were legally determined to not be a “cola,” this ruling meant they were then able to distribute their products to the masses by using bottling companies that had exclusive contracts with either Coke or Pepsi. That was a pretty massive win at the time.

Fascinating! Honestly. I don't know if anyone remembers, but Dr pepper ran a good campaign promoting its product to be served HEATED. I clearly remember an ad where a French Canadian lumberjack comes into a cabin from a snowstorm, and orders his wife to bring him "Dr Pepper HOT weeth Lem-OHN!" I'd love to see a companion piece about the late, great JOLT ("All the sugar--TWICE the caffeine!") Cola OR, what about Canfield's diet chocolate soda?

It's completely messed up in Europe. In the UK (where coca cola produce it) the branding is completely different, as are the flavours. We occasionally get Dr Pepper imported from Europe to some stores, which tastes totally different and comes in different bottle designs. I believe Keurig own the rights and produce it themselves or license it to PepsiCo in Poland, which results in the weird mix match of drinks that are called Dr Pepper. It's a super confusing mess of trademark law.
