Dr. Kyle Gillett: Tools for Hormone Optimization in Males | Huberman Lab Podcast 102

Ғылым және технология

My guest is Kyle Gillett, MD, a dual board-certified physician in family medicine and obesity medicine and an expert in optimizing hormone levels to improve overall health. We discuss how to optimize male hormones using a range of nutritional and behavioral tools, exercise, and supplementation (including discussions on tongkat ali, fadogia agrestis, creatine, peptides and more). We explain how puberty and aging affect hormone levels, how to use bloodwork to monitor hormone levels, how hormone health impacts fertility, libido, hair loss, and prostate health, and describe behaviors that negatively impact testosterone levels. We also discuss how to approach prescription hormone therapies, including which biomarkers to monitor when using these approaches and how to optimize synergistic hormones (e.g., growth hormone and thyroid hormone) to support complete hormone health safely and rationally. Dr. Gillett offers numerous actionable tools that can be tailored to specific goals and age ranges to attain and maintain optimal levels of male hormones for overall health, well-being and longevity.

Just a quick question- as a (mainly) vegetarian for ethical reasons, what are the reasons why you would not recommend vegetarianism for children and young adults? What aspects of animal based, and especially meat-based proteins that make a vegetarian diet rich in protein, so inferior compared to a diet with more meat? Thanks for the very interesting discussion.

Some imperfect highlights: - Have goals, do not need to be end goals. - Pick a goal - Reach the goal - Pick a new goal - Repeat - Hormone optimization for men - Get enough sunlight - Get exercise/movement - 60 minutes - Get quality social connection - Avoid excessive masturbation and pornography i.e. 0 is optimal for most people - Supplements - Creatine - Betanin - L-Carnitine - Tongkat ali - 400 mg to 1200 mg (daily) (capsules) - Fadogia Agrestis - 300 mg - Multi-vitamins - Vitamin D - Iodine / Goitrogens - Peptides - Not super important - Fasting - Dangerous Substances - SARMS - messes with estrogen receptors - Alcohol - negatives outweigh positives - Nicotine - Cycling - Careful, as it affects core and prostate - Plastic bottles - Tumeric (for some people)

I noticed my hair started thinning in my late 20's and now in my early 30's but don't want to use the treatments due to potential side effects. A few years ago I also took creatine for only a month to help weight training but stopped out of the fear of increased DHT, though Dr. Gillett says it should be OK. I probably have a genetic DHT sensitivity. Hope the new SCUBE3 treatment testing is successful and becomes available to purchase.

I just want to mention a life changing finding I had last year. My whole life since I was a teenager I felt something was just a tiny bit off. Low libido (still some but it only came on every few days) low motivation, kind of weak for my size. Long story short I always assumed it was low T but I tested right in the middle of the normal range multiple times. I was doing the testing through my PCP who was reluctant and literally only ordered circulating testosterone be checked. After some time I got curious again and did an expensive (to me) full hormone panel. It was low estrogen. My whole fucking life. Figuring out how to balance my hormones with a clinic has made me finally feel normal. I wish we talked more and and more about estrogen in males. I never would have dreamed. It gave me all the things people think taking testosterone will do. I can’t imagine the complexities of human sexual health and hormonal health but I do know most peoples perception of it is outdated.

After watching Andrew's first podcast with Dr. Gillett, and then watching many other podcasts with Dr. Gillett (he has his own channel of podcasts), I decided to contact his office and begin working with them. I just had a full draw of blood to perform a thorough health panel. I'm anxious to read and hear about the results.

That is very interesting. I’m happy that you finally found the reason for your condition. I’ve also thought that I’m low T but a standard T test said I was normal but a bit low. I’m curious what kind of symptoms you had that made u feel something was off. I’ve been feeling tired and weak for 25 years but doctors haven’t found anything wrong with me and I don’t have any problems that suggest otherwise. Thanks much 🙏❤️

Hello Andrew, you are gifted with amazing language abilities and a beautiful heart. Thank you for putting your gift at work and bring us all these knowledge and insights. 🙏 I learned about kisspeptin from another episode of yours. I was under the impression it is a viable option to manage puberty for the purpose of maximizing growth. But in this episode, if I understood it correctly peptides were deemed as imprudent. I did notice that kisspeptin wasn’t specifically mentioned. Can you please talk a bit more about kisspeptin? Specifically can teenagers use it to prolong puberty to maximize growth? Thank you!

Good Morning/Evening Andrew, I love your stuff, i'm 21 and you've inspired me to start making my wellbeing a priority; the changes i have made through your influence have had a massive impact on my Physical, Mental and habitual health. The only Kicker is that i suffer with Psoriasis and struggle to find comprehensive research on tackling this that doesn't conflict with other things i read, of course Psoriasis is an Auto-Immune disease so i found episode #44 & #62 indirectly related however not completely applicable. Im from the UK so Living in a country with free healthcare is great however the waiting list i am on before seeing a dermatologist is a year plus long and i'm dying to know what i can do now from a source i trust such as yourself, i know a large amount of people personally with various skin conditions who have the same issues as i and would greatly, greatly appreciate your insight on the subject. Apologies in advance; i am going to post this in the comments sections all over your social media praying you will see this; so, please do not think negatively of me for the spam that is about to ensue. Kindest of Regards Andrew, You're a great bloke. -James Stedman

As a young guy in his early 20s, noticing rapid signs of hair loss left me no choice but to hop on the finasteride bandwagon lol its really hard to find genuine info over the topic of inhibiting DHT and its short and long term effects, plus there's the placebo discussion that comes with it as well. Personally i havent experienced any loss of libido but my motivation has been a rollercoaster ever since i start the drug. Idk if its because of the the drug specifically or my specific lifestyle habits, BUT I WOULD LOVE to hear Dr. Gillett and Dr. Huberman discuss more on this topic.

Would love to hear more about your thoughts on micro plastics and their impact on male hormones. I think that this is a major contributing factor in the decline of testosterone levels. Surely not a coincidence that testosterone levels started dropping inline with our increased use of plastics and their pollution in the environment. It is known that micro plastics impact fertility.
