Understanding the complexity surrounding cryptocurrencies is essential in making the correct decisions regarding investing in DeFi technology. To help us understand the basics, we talked to Dr. Igor Makarov who is an expert on cryptocurrency and Bitcoin, particularly Bitcoin and the associated mining processes. He is based at the London School of Economics, where he serves as an Associate Professor of Finance. Dr. Makarov is also the author of several papers focusing on DeFi and crypto markets in general and has provided new insights surrounding governance and mining processes. In today’s show, we learn about the basics of cryptocurrencies, mining and the future of DeFi. In particular, we talk about the role of intermediaries, what drives the prices of Bitcoin, how concentrated mining processes are, the role DeFi in increasing governance, the upsides and downsides of cryptocurrencies, and much more. Thanks for this series Ben and Cameron, I really appreciate how you're trying to understand a complex topic piece by piece from basic principles, rather than immediately jumping to a conclusion and working backwards to evidence.
Clearly, Bitcoin has become a mirror on which people project their beliefs about value and monetary policy. A similar phenomenon seems to inspire gold collectors.

I’m 95 percent S&P 500 index funds and 5 percent BTC. I find the technology and scarcity of Bitcoin interesting.

It took me 11 days for my first BTC purchase to complete. So, the technology is not at all interesting 😂. I am yet to find a real usecase for cryptocurrency. As far as blockchain is concerned, may be there are a handful of Legit usecases but those problems are solvable by traditional technology as well with proper cryptography access controls and security.
These videos may soon be irrelevant.

Worst case (best case?) scenario they will be a good post-mortem.
Cryptos do not yet have statistical relevance. They are extremely volatile and do not work for protection. They should still be targeted by central banks, which could have their monetary sovereignty attacked. Therefore, it is a speculative investment for now.

There is no need for cryptocurrencies. At least for countries that are politically stable. Now that eliminates 98% of the transactions 😂
