So do I and so do all Jews and most likely most Palestinians alike. But don't be fooled. WE are not dealing with a normal governing regime here. Hamas is a dangerous, radical islamist movement and you simply cannot negotiate with such people. Israel has tried repeatedly and even handed over Gaza to the Palestinians in 2005. And look where we are now.

Thank you Dr. Mate (and family)! My heart is with you. I am half Palestinian. My father was born and raised in Ramallah. I am a genetic descendent of the Christian Arab tribe that founded Ramallah, hundreds of years ago. All of my immediate family fled the area in the late 1940’s My father married a white American and here I am today, standing in my kitchen in California crying while I watch your video. Aware how little my voice matters to most people I encounter on a daily basis. Often feeling powerless and alone in my grief, especially since I pass for White and spend time in protestant circles. I often feel like no one I know wants to hear the true history of the region or consider the humanity of both or either side. I have tried over and over again! Being asked to think critically seems to be very inconvenient for most of the people I know. :( Thank you. Thank you for using your voice. Thank you in general for all of the ways’s you have worked to make the world a better place over so many years. I am also an RN, and appreciate all the work you’ve done in relation to medicine, harm reduction, public health etc. I am a true fan, and I stand in solidarity with you in shared grief over this conflict.

I didn't understand.. What is this terrible and wrong symmetry? How can you compare the abductees, children, women and the elderly who were abducted from their beds while they watched the rest of their family being murdered in cold blood, and security prisoners who were arrested after acts of terrorism with blood on their hands? How can one compare the brutal terrorist attack that included the rape of women and beheading of babies and eating the organs of children in front of their parents and the elimination of Hamas as a result of the terrorist attack that Hamas - ISIS carried out?! How do you not see all the suffering that Hamas - ISIS causes the Palestinians? How come you who play it, enlightened people, don't want to open history books and learn what was here instead of lying endlessly? How much hypocrisy and lies are here, mixing yourselves with the blood of the terrorists. It's sad to see how many ignorant fools listen to you.

I try and remember that the Jewish people carry alot of generational trauma stemming from a time that people didn't go through counseling. It makes them fearful, and bad people manipulate that fear to make them support things that they normally would not. The Jewish people were so afraid that they would be victims again that they created an ethno state. Ethno states can only happen at the expense of others. More and more are coming around, but perhaps following even more trauma that brings up echos of the past, isnt the best time to try and push for it. If they are a typical American, they have been deeply deeply brainwashed.

    - He talks about Gaza being occupied. He is correct about that, until 18 years ago. But it was as a result of Egypt attacking Israel, and Israel conquering that piece of land as well as Sinai. Again, tried to give it back, but got stuck with it. - He claims that "Gaza is the largest concentration camp in the world". First, I don't know any concentration camp that has beautiful neighborhoods and a lovely beach. I'll see if I can find a video that shows the nice areas of Gaza and send it to you. It has playgrounds and beautiful buildings and houses. A large part of Gaza lives in poverty. This is not Israel's fault. Hamas spends all the money on weapons and a lavish lifestyle for its leaders. Israel put in water pipes for them to have clean water and Hamas dug the pipes out and used them to make rockets to attack Israel. Gabor Mate doesn't mention any of that. Israel built an industrial complex in Gaza for them to start having businesses. They burned it down. Israel started letting people from Gaza come into Israel to do business and work. Those are the people who drew maps for Hamas to know where and who to attack (after pretending to be all peace-loving and friendly). We can't have an open border with them, because they have openly announced that they want to kill us. Egypt could have an open border with them, but they don't get criticized for not doing it, even though Gaza used to be Egypt and these are literally their keen. - The numbers Gabor and Hannah quote are provided by the Health Ministry, which is run by Gaza. They are known to lie. There are Gaza prisoners now testifying that Hamas was disguised as hospital staff at Al-Shifa hospital. They cheat and lie, and yet Gabo and Hannah are taking their word as gospel. Israeli victims of Palestinian terror attacks were given no notice. - It is correct that Gaza was occupied until 2005. They were occupied as a result of Israel conquering that land when Israel was attacked by Egypt. Israel has tried to give Gaza back to Egypt, but they won't take it back. If we don't occupy it (as has been the case for the past 18 years), they build tunnels and ammunition against us and use the space to launch rockets into Israel. If we occupy it, we are blamed for occupying. There is no good solution. - Gabor says that Gaza is "the largest concentration camp in the world". That's because Hamas is hoarding all the resources. They could be a lovely tourist destination. They have a beautiful beach. It is their choice. Actual concentration camps don't have that choice. - The definition that Gabor gives for genocide is incorrect. The real definition includes "aim of destroying the nation or group". Israel has no intention of destroying the Palestinian people. If they wanted to do that, they could have done it on Oct. 8th or sooner. They do intent to destroy Hamas - but that is a terrorist organization that has vowed to exterminate them. - Gabor says that Israel is committing war crimes. This is not correct. Israel is acting very ethically. They gave plenty of notice for civilians to leave, they could have finished the job by air, but they are sending in foot soldiers (many of whom have been killed in the battle) in order to prevent Palestinian civilian deaths. In WWII between one and two million German civilians died. Does that mean that Britain and US should have ceased fire sooner? Would Gabor even be alive today is Britain had ceased fire on Germany? - Gabor is correct about a two state solution being necessary. Israel has agreed to a two-state solution on several occasions. The Palestinians have rejected it every single time. Hamas doesn't want a two-state solution. They want all of Israel. Let's hope that after Hamas is defeated, the new government will want actual peace with Israel and a two-state solution can be achieved. - Gazans don't grow up as prisoners of Israel. They grow up as prisoners of Hamas. - One of the main Hamas guys who organized the Oct 7th barbaric massacre was a prisoner in Isarel who was exchanged (along with over a thousand other Palestinian prisoners) for one Israeli soldier (Shalit). While in Israeli prison, he got an advanced degree in Engineering and learned languages (including Hebrew). Palestinian prisoners in Israel get all sorts of perks, including ordering special meats and using a special thing to make pitas. Any Israeli in Gaza gets lynched. When Shalit was hostage in Gaza, he did not get to study for an advanced degree. He barely got fed. - The IDF leaving Gaza before destroying Hamas is signing up for more of the same.

Thank you Dr. Mate & Hannah for your insightful reflections on October 7th. While not excusing Hamas's brutal attack on Israel, your insights into the events from their 80-year history which led up to Hamas's brutal attack and its horrific aftermath puts everything into stark perspective. My thoughts and prayers go to all of the innocent children, women, and men in both Israel and Palestine. War, violence, and revenge is NOT the answer. I pray that Israelis and Palestinians will someday learn to peacefully coexist, develop greater tolerance and respect for one other, and to fully embrace the fact that we're all interconnected. There must be a ceasefire and release of both Hamas's hostages as well as innocent Palestinians who are imprisoned in Israeli jails.❤☮ Jenny USA

@spadelives2 It seems the comment referred to the fact that hamas is not the real representative of many Palestinians in Gaza- that instead it is a fundamentalist and violent autocratic body. And I'd add that Israeli govt had a lot to do with creating, strengthening hamas to move world opinion towards Israels political ends. Again, like Dr. Gabor, I'm in no way a Jew hating antisemite, nor an advocate for regional Arab disdain or hatred for the nation of Israel. Just an advocate of everyone seeing each other as fellow humans and children of God.

  • @spadelives2

I wish that were true but alas it is not. Hamas is the elected representative of Gaza. even through there hasn't been an election lately, they still enjoyed majority support right up until Oct 7th according to every poll taken. It is true that they are a fundamentalist and violent autocratic body, which makes is even more astonishing that they are so popular among their people. I'm afraid you've fallen for the trap of transferring your values system onto others since the Palestinians have never demonstrated any desire for peaceful coexistence. Israel did try to help the Palestinians by allowing aid transfers (including huge sums from Qatar) and opening job opportunities to Gazans to improve their economic situation but the goal was to stabilize the situation, not to strengthen Hamas.. Oct 7th demonstrated how that worked out. Gabor is (and always has been) a Jew hating antisemite as evidenced by the litany of excuses he's offered on behalf of Hamas. Nothing can ever justify the atrocities of Oct 7th, full stop.,@@paul-laurienelson4127

I think that Gabor Mate comes from a really good place of wanting peace and wanting to see things objectively. And some of what he says may be right for before 2005... However: - When he says that what Israelis experienced on Oct 7th is what Palestinians have been experiencing for years, I wish that he would point out that Israel's aggressions towards Gaza have been as a retaliation for attacks on Israel. This is not the first time that Israelis suffer from terrorist attacks. I grew up hearing about buses blowing up on a regular basis. Maybe Israel attacked indiscriminately after those terrorist bus blow ups. But I don't know what a "correct" response if to innocent civilians getting blown up to pieces while riding a bus. Israel didn't attack Gaza for fun. It was in response to their attacks. Israel just wanted them to leave us alone. Israel tried to give Gaza back to Egypt, but Egypt refused to take it back.

I've been eagerly awaiting this response from Dr. Maté. My heart has been so heavy with all of this horrifying news, as it has been for years in empathy for the Palestinian condition, and I knew I'd be soothed by your measured yet unflinching factual take on this. My great-grandfather x5 was a Cherokee survivor of the Trail of Tears and his immediate family "voluntarily" removed from their ancestral lands in Georgia to Indian Territory before him. As I watch so many people cheer on this 3 week revenge campaign against innocent civilians, I can't help but imagine how painful it must have been for my ancestors to watch as people cheered on their genocide. Your calm, trauma-informed expertise is exactly what I knew I needed right now, I'm grateful beyond belief, Dr. Maté. I send you peace and love. 🫂✌️

Anyone who can justify this has no compassion in their soul. Dr Maté , a kind compassionate soul.

There are also plenty of people who haven't been historically oppressed but still find it in their hearts to empathize, too. Hats off to them all. Empathy and solidarity are such beautiful expressions of one's humanity. I also remember that it was Palestinians who were some of the very first people to come out in support of Black Lives Matter, when they shared their expertise on how best to treat tear gas injuries with the good people in Ferguson, MO. I also discovered Hannah, Daniel and Aaron's work and would like to congratulate you and your wife Rae for having such genuinely empathic and kind-hearted intellectual artist children. I am also amazed by God's plan where He made Dr. Maté experience trauma to become a voice for people who would suffer from it and make us see its horrible impact on children and their adulthood. I pray Allah protect and bless you all and helps all voice the suffering of people subject to genocide and work to help heal it.

I think having your life immersed in violence and death for long periods makes most people more cruel. Whether they’re the victims or victimizers, people frequently exposed to cruelty and death learn implicitly that human life is cheap. On top of this, I think you have a worldwide problem of people feeling despair about the future and becoming more isolated/atomized from each other. These problems put together create people who are less empathetic, more cruel, and feel like they’ve got nothing to lose. This doesn’t mean we’re all doomed to become monsters. Pain can also be a force that makes us more empathetic and less willing to inflict cruelty on others, as long as we don’t let go of what makes us human. Stay safe and stay human friend 🤝

As a 68 year old Palestinian living in Scotland who has a great knowledge of the history of Palestine and beyond not just modern history but as far as you can go.your video made me cry all the way and as I am writing my comments as what has happened in palestine in the last 100+ years is so terrifying especially to the Palestinians who are demonised mainly for the actions of Europeans who through the history demonised Jews and prosecuted them for being Jewish not for crimes that they have committed and used collective punishment against indigenous people who they colonised. Creating Israel was not for the love of Jews by the Europeans nor is the blind support for Israeli continued aggression against the Palestinian, as to support a person means honesty and call them wrong when they are wrong and not to help them when they have been aggressive against others especially if that aggression is as Israel has done since before it became a country and continued till today. We satand with peace and justice. I believe in a one state solution where everyone has same equal rights with the Wright of Palestinians to return to their own homeland and compensation for all victims which will create a prosperous Middle East as was in Andalusia 100s of yeas ago

Sure! West bank was for ~20 years under Jordan occupation from 1948 to 1967, why Jordan did not "create a Palestinan State"? why? Good question, isn't it? BTW: Jordan is ~70% of the Mandate of Palestine, and also: The "palestinian flag" and the Jordanian flag is exacly the same flag (but w 1 small start). The same as Gaza: Gaza is Egyptian land and it was under Egyptian rule for ~20 yrs after 1948 (and for most of history), the same, why they did not create a "palestinian state"? why? Gaza is not a "concentration camp" please look in utube: "5 places to visit in Gaza", & see the luxury in there, Rimal was THE most luxurous Arab neighborhood in the area. See the Islamic University of Gaza compared to Oxford, the gold store street, the luxurious Mall of Gaza, is this what a concentration camp looked /looks like? Also: who is blocking Gaza because is a terrorist state, is Egypt, the border w Israel is open. Hamas = ISIS = Boko Haram = Taliban = AlQaeda = Bin landen, which was rich, but he chose the path of terrorism and the carnal alfertife offered in the Quran Gaza: The most luxurious Arabs city in the whole area: 5 places to visit in Gaza: kzread.info/dash/bejne/fHajmctmhLvfZtY.html

You are right. Also you probably know that Muslims and Jews lived together peacefully as brothers & sisters for hundreds of years in Spain and the Balkans. Muslims and Jews were equally persecuted during the Spanish Inquisition by the Christian rulers. My father-in-law was a Sephardic Jew whose family was driven from Granada during the Inquisition and fled to Turkey, where they lived tranquilly for the next 500 years with their Muslim neighbors. His family emigrated to Israel when he was a young child. He used to say that until he moved to the Israel, Muslims and Jews lived together like brothers. And also, they knew that if a place was safe for Muslims, it would also be safe for Jews, and vice versa. The idea that Muslims and Jews are historical enemies is false, damaging to peace and must be pushed back on whenever it's cited.

There is an asymmetry to the role played by one such as Dr Maté, which needs to be addressed. It is the very uniqueness of his position, a Jew advocating for a balanced view of Israel to further the Palestinian cause, which must be highlighted. Where are the public personas, intellectuals, and professionals in the Muslim camp, using their platform to call on the Muslim masses to shake off the backwardness of radical Islam? Where is the moderate Muslim who raises his voice against those who take up the Palestinian flag so that they can chant Antisemitic hatred under the banner of naive liberalism? No need to sell me on the rational academic treatises of revisionist Zionism: the fair view and the call for justice for the Palestinians from the Jewish camp is known to me. Please direct me to the works aimed at opening the eyes of the Muslim masses, who have for years kept the Palestinians in camps, pawns to be played in futile Jihadist plotting to once and for all eradicate the Zionist entity. Direct me to the works of the Muslim scholars who call on the Palestinian people to foster leadership that chooses to couple its destiny with the Jewish people for all the obvious benefits the Jewish people have gifted to the world, including, in no small measure, one such as Dr Maté.

Hello my friend he is actually extremely biased against Israel as he did not mention that Hamas and other terrorists have been killing innocent Israelis for many, many years, they blew up my best friend when I was a child. Additionally the people in Israeli prisons are largely murderers or planning to murder and sadly Hamas puts women and young boys up to that as well. Israel doesn’t just randomly kill people they are trying to get the terrorists and murderers. Also there is A LOT of anti-Jewish hate, I know a 12 year old American boy beaten up in his school and the kids called him a dirty Jew. So Gabor means well and he kind of forgets his own people. We need to have our pain acknowledged too. So we can all move forward together as humans and heal. I pray we can have peace and the 2 states sons day soon, all the children coming home safe, all the children getting a chance to be free from Hamas and any other tyranny, Israeli and Palestinian kids all deserve better, thank you my friend for listening and God bless.

Religion, affiliations, and background aside, remaining objective and protecting the vulnerable is often very difficult to do and you, sir, do it with such dignity you are a role model and an inspiration. Thank you for still going strong and not giving up.
