Dr. Cornel West Reacts to Biden’s Decision on Student Loan Debt

The White House confirmed that Feb. 1 is the day Americans will have to restart paying their student loans.
Ending student loan relief has far-reaching consequences for Black college graduates who owe on average twice as much debt as white graduates.
Over the last 20 years, the number of Black people with a college degree has more than doubled, from three million to 6.7 million, according to the Brookings Institution.
Dr. Cornel West, activist, philosopher and chair at the Union Theological Seminary, joins Charles Blow on “Prime” to discuss how this impacts Black graduates.
All this and more on “Prime.”

I agree, my wife and I have useless bachelors degrees in business administration. These days, high tech computer programs do the jobs that humans used to do in the field. Between the both of us, we have around 85k in student loans. Cancelling student loans would provide a miracle of relief to our family.

I wish high school would offer a class that talked about the job market, business advice ( get local business owners to come and talk about their struggles and advice), understanding loans, good trade schools... stuff that can help a high schooler make better choices. I did my own research and asked questions since my parents couldnt really help and im happy with what i majored in and can pay my loans. There are so many routes one can take to be successful college isn't the only way.

Cornell West has benefited all his life from getting students to sign up for classes that will be useless in the economy, they go to an Ivy League study all these humanities classes for 1/4 million dollars and come out and can’t get a job except for a retail job, for which they didn’t need to go to college. Then some of them then have to realize one of two things, that college was a waste of time and money, or you now have to pivot into an actual college education that will help you make more money, business, accounting, law, sciences, health, engineering, etc… and spend more time and money in college… You want to effect real change in America fund trade schools, get kids to learn plumbing, electrical, HVAC, mechanics, construction, carpentry those jobs pay well, and you can have a small independent business if you want, you can be in the union, etc.

Only objects and animals can be black, and white etc...but who the hell knows..if you wanted to look at his family, it's possible his mother or father could've been European..race is a very nuanced conversation, that can never really be had, because a lot of us don't know who we are... that's why they love to have you think about "RACE" versus real issues like doing for yourself, and not needing a pimp like the government

Black community, please do not allow this college loan chaos prevent you from going to college. The way to remedy this issue is to study in a degree that will pay you well so you could overcome your loans. A white person can get away studying anything but do not forget the household income of a white family to a black family is 120k to 40k. Point is that if things do not work out post graduation for a white child, the parent are comfortable enough to help out their child and this is not even factoring the privilege when it comes to the workforce. Also Black Community, don't let fools like Jim Clyburn sway you away from a great candidate like Bernie Sanders. Unfortunately, there are no future Sanders in sight. Sooo brace for impact. I expect more hardship for the community unless we band together.

It is the disproportionate college education requirement job to income ratio that effects many Americans. Students go to college for a business degree or marketing degree and graduate to make 50k a year with 150k in student loans. It will take them 30yrs to pay that off. A majority of degrees in specific fields don't make enough of a salary to justify the amount of loans they had to take out to go to college in the first place. Back in the day a college degree meant you where going to make great money and live high on the hog. Now, a college degree is preferred to get a job at Starbucks. The job market isn't there for these students to be able to graduate and make a good living and be able to contribute to the economy by buying a house, cars etc... These top tier store bought politicians could care a less about the working class of America, all they care about are the lobbyist that put money in their pockets. The idea is to keep a majority of Americans in debt so they cannot achieve their version of the American dream. They don't want people to have no debt because then the money stops.
