Cornel West on His Resignation from Harvard University

Black scholar and progressive activist Cornel West announced that he’s resigning from Harvard University.
In a letter that he wrote and posted on Twitter, he’s accusing the school of “intellectual and spiritual bankruptcy.” West indicates in the letter that his support for Palestine was the reason that Harvard didn’t give him tenure. Earlier this year, West gave up tenure at Harvard Divinity School and instead joined the faculty at Union Theological Seminary.
West joined Charles Blow on “Prime” to discuss the reasoning behind his decision to resign.
All this and more on “Prime.”

@@madawade We all certainly deserve some amount of suffering as we all are imperfect and have hurt others. The fact that we all are imperfect also makes room for some level of mercy and forgiveness as we are all works in progress, but bad actions cause bad consequences to ourselves. that includes hurting others. I personally take issue with Black academics that never attended or taught at an HBCU getting positions at HBCUs after experiencing some level of racial inequity at a white space they CHOSE, when there are hundreds of Black academics who attended and/or chose to teach at our beloved HBCUs. HBCUs are not the backup plan for people who seek white credibility or adjacency in predominantly white institutions, then run to us after they are cut down in white spaces. I know a lot of Black professionals who teach a few classes, while they have a full time professions to pay the bills. This is a good solution for both sides. The schools get working professionals in a number of fields to teach a couple of classes. Plus, this gives stude access to people in their field to be mentors, to offer internships, or just occasional advice. The professional gets to beef up his/her CV. They get access to bright, young, energetic interns. Finally, they have first pick at the best and the brightest

This is partially his fault. People like him and Michael Eric Dyson are extremely intelligent men. West used the Harvard university name and put up with a university that was using his name in return. If he has tenure at three other universities, ( Yale , Union Theological Seminary and Princeton ) why the hell did he put up with that treatment from Harvard for 15 years ? Go where you are appreciated not tolerated and used. Most of our academics and scholars should be working at HBCU’s any way. The only reason they are putting up with the piss poor treatment they get at PWI’s is because they seek prestige and White validation that never comes to them in full.

Okay. The problem with higher education is that a lot of these institutions are money making enterprises. Universities have been using their strength to make as much money as they can. The Ivy League/Seven Sisters use their historical prestige. A lot of the preeminent Science/Engineering Schools (MIT, Stanford, Cal Tech) have used their ingenuity to make money through grants, consulting agreements. AND schools known for sports (Alabama, Duke, UNC, Notre Dame) are using their student-athletes to rake in the cash. It seems like so many of the schools that used to be proud of their dedication to the students have lost their way.

@@PHANKS987 I am fairly certain that the primary reason he was denied tenure is racially motivated since his political stance had been increasingly at odds with the ever-waning intellectual and academic standards & moral decadence in his field. For instance, Cornel West was one of the VERY FEW black intellectuals to harshly censure Obama's presidential terms as a betrayal not only to the impoverished (predominantly non-white) and middle-class voters, but even to the constitution and founding ideals of the country. West also laid in on Obama's reneging on campaign promises to reform US foreign policies and ramping up murders of civilians in the Middle East region as if to outdo Bush. THAT alone among his many public statements and justified outspokenness on the evils of the US government would have surely invoked the ire of many corrupt personalities in ivy league academia. Starting with the morally bankrupt Larry Summers, the then Harvard president... www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2013/09/the-comprehensive-case-against-larry-summers/279651/

@@MazBringsby You're right, he's been controversial, outspoken and speaking truth to power for a long time. He is certainly an out of the box thinker and his classes have got to be quite stimulating and popular. But then again I'm sure they already knew that before he reached this level. I can remember a professor or two like that, really made you think.

Yeah, he doesn't care about status? Then why did he resign because they didn't give him tenure? Tenure is literally a status symbol to someone like Dr. West. They hurt his feelings, that's all. And I guess that's why he bitched and threw a tantrum when he did not get invited to Obama's inauguration? He felt he deserved it because he is privileged.

It seems that some black people just cannot take a hint: This is the second time that Cornell West has left Harvard because of disrespect. Remember the Lawrence Summers brouhaha? What did Einstein say about repetition and expecting a different result?

I wonder if Dr.West will change his very prominent Einstein’ish “Hairstyle” now, after he suddenly decided to bash his former “CONTROVERSIAL” employer over his tenure ! The world of academia -Specifically in 🇺🇸- is not what we all think “i.e PRESTIGE”, NO !!! To put it in one single word that will make you understand... : *EPSTEIN* . ☠️
