Two problems: the first is the exploitation of the students requiring them to pay for education that they don’t need, and the second is the predatory practices of the banks providing loans. Another factor is the social pressure on students to get a degree rather than to enter a trade.

What loro1rojo said. BTW, before student loans were given out by the federal government one had to go to a private bank to get a student loan just as one does for a car loan, house loan, business loan or unsecured loan. There is no way one could walk into a private bank and say my family has no means, I didn't do well enough in high school to get a scholarship, but I want a $200 thousand loan to go to Harvard for women's or ethnic studies. They would look at what a major paid and say no way. The federal government has no problem handing out huge loans for worthless majors. And too few are asking the central question here: Why is it so expensive to get a degree now? The answer is unionization of school employees, and that is routed in jealousy. The philosophy department people would look on envy at how much an engineering teacher made but it takes more to lure an engineer into teaching than it does a philosophy major into teaching. When was the last time you saw a private sector job posting saying, for example, philosophy major wanted at Ford Motor Company? It doesn't happen. Then all the grounds and building keepers and office help are all unionized and that's why education is so expensive.

@@spankynater4242 Right! Most students only want the money in their hands and that same day they go to "celebrate" with their friends! I've seen them spending the loan money like is water and then crying because they have nothing to show for it. But, ah, the "celebration" was very fun and entertaining! Well, entertain yourselves paying it back! Why should taxpayers that saw not even one cent of it have to pay it back? Wasn't it fun filling papers that you were independent and had no family to back you up so you could file out your papers as "needy?" Exactly! You still are "independent" and had no one to "back you up" to pay for your loan! Good luck to you!

Children have been given 12 years of taxpayer funded since the law was passed in 1939. When these children become adults at 18 they are expected to make adult decisions for themselves. If they decide that they are worth investing in themselves then they need to decide how to pay for that adult decision. These people that took out a loan need to be held accountable for their decision and not pass off their obligations onto others. If they can't be responsible for the commitment that they made, are they really adult enough for higher learning?

No doubt late charges and other fees that might be incurred due to variables such falling behind can add to the overall remaining balance, but the principal itself would still not be affected. Again, perhaps this person took out a neg-am loan, which I'm surprised such a loan would be made available to students.

I had 33k in student loan debt when I graduated in 2000 summa cum laude with a degree in philosophy. Not a very lucrative degree but it was fun! I worked and saved then would take substantial portions of my savings and apply it towards the student loans. Took me awhile to pay but I did it…and so can you! Stay positive. Another thing I did is when I made a big payment I’d treat myself to something like some real good quality clothes, or an expensive dinner for myself and a friend! Yeah it sucked sometimes but I had to do it…and I believe y’all can too. Stay positive! I do feel that college is too costly and would prefer very reasonable price tags but atm it isn’t like that unfortunately.

I owe more money on my current student loan (been out of college for 12 years) than I will be able to pay back before I die...but I don't expect someone else to pay it for me. That's just plain rude. How about working on all of the other factors that will assist people in making sure they can afford to pay down their debt. If anything, a student loan assures you a good start in establishing your credit. The one thing I did take advantage of...continuing to pay my same minimum payment during the break we were given not to pay the loan - and it all went to the principle.

If you go to a store and buy a jacket, you dont just get to return it, get your money back and keep the jacket. You have to PHYSICALLY return it to the store. Well... if you want your debt forgiven, then maybe you shouldn't have the degree. The agreement was for a bank to loan you money so that you can get an education. Fine, you walk away with the education, but you dont get your credentials. How about that?

Those interviewed college students, did any have a major in other than, say, ethnic studies, sociology, anthropology or political science? Probably not. So these students, and many, many like them, wasted their time and MONEY on majors that will lead to jobs that are non-productive, low paying and worthless, that is, if they could even find a job that's "commensurate" with their talent and self-importance.😮 So, now they want politicians and bureaucrats, aka, "the government," to forgive the loans they took to pay for their poor decisions. Do I have this right? If so, then I must agree with the SCOTUS decision to deny these students "college loan forgiveness."
