"I'll Play The Fool" Composed by Stony Browder, Jr. & August Darnell
This vintage TV clip of Dr.Buzzard's Original Savannah Band begins with an introduction by the legendary Dinah Shore while Sean Connery, Jill Ireland & George Kirby are chilling. This is the first of two songs that were performed. The second song from this TV show has also been posted.
SUGARCOATED SIDEBAR:
During these times all the TV shows wanted us to mime the entire performance which we were reluctant to do. A compromise was reached with the shows we finally performed on.
We revisited the studio and did a special TV mix. The lead vocal, some of the background vocals, and a few instruments were muted.
Thus Cory's vocal is completely live and so is the piano, hi-hat, and toms. Stony & August's microphones are live but their background vocals are also on tape thus at times they are doubling themselves. The bellhop singers in the background, horn section, Vibraphones, Guitar, Bass, most of the Drum kit, Percussion, and synthesizer are miming. Notice also that you hear but do not see strings.
Addendum: In those days there were no automated boards or home music software/computers etc. In order to duplicate the exact mix you had to take polaroids/pictures of the board and painstakingly notate all the knob settings for everything including EQs, reverbs, delays, volume faders, etc. When we did the TV remix we used the mixing documentation in order to maintain as much as possible the integrity of the original record mix.
BELLHOP SIDEBAR The Bellhop background singers were just hired for the show.
- Debra Anderson (left) went on and became part of the disco group Stargard.
- Lynda Seals (right) has worked with various artists including Friends of Distinction, Lola Falana, Bill Cosby, Abbe Lane, Johnny Mathis, and Helen Reddy

Zoot suits and '40s swing. How great!
Every song on the album is brilliant. Hard to keep from smiling when hearing this. Cory is a goddess.
Love this record forever...also love the old VHS tracking time warp!!!
My parents would have their house parties, and put all the kids in one room, and have the music blasting; while the kids would be playing including myself, music like this would grab my attention. Every so often one of the parents would stick their head in the door and ask, "Yall alright?" When that was done the music was even louder. I wouldn't take nothing for my journey; I miss the small nuances of my life, and this is part of the sound track.

Dont forget Kid Creole playing the bass. Kid and Stoney, the pianist, were real brothers.
what an amazing performance, everbody moved and danced to perfection, the look was dope, and the beautiful singer, Cory Daye, the voice of an angel.
Always loved that song and that band. I still have my album from 1977. I❤CoryDaye
Like the sun spreading it's warmth and brilliance
Aw snap that Coati on the vibraphones jammin out! Guys got such style you could recognize him a mile away.
I absolutely love this track. This is just about perfect music, the arrangements, the chords, the melody and the amazing performance. Cory's voice was amazing, especially her ad-libs at the end of each verse and during the coda. I was very much into hard rock during the '70s but this and 'Cherchez La Femme ' were two of my favorite songs.
WOW... I spent 30 years singing this song to myself and to finally see them do it..............PRICELESS
This band was fabulous.

WOW! I remember when!
Great performances .
Reminds me so much of growing up in West Philadelphia(I also lived and still rep North Philadelphia). My mom played this album religiously(Thanks Carolyn Armstead for introducing me to so much great music). My sisters, Tina and Tameka used to sing Cherchez La Femme all the time. Oh and I also used to swear that my aunt Theresa was Cory Daye(lol). I loved my childhood and I thank my family for such great memories.

Greetings West Philly. I was born and raised in South Philly and loved this group. I was totally captivated by Cory Daye back then. She looks sooooo beautiful in this performance.
Cory sang the hell out of this song, with her talented and gorgeous self. She's still doing it even today.
Thanks for posting this! This is really rare!
Thanks for the video. Love this band.
Big respect, the self titled has to be one of my favourite records of all time.

Nice one. Thank you for holding on all these years. Make sure to read the description box for some additional tidbits. On a different note, I did an experimental short film that you might hopefully enjoy. Make sure to keep viewing after the tiles. There’s some bonus gyrating footage. "..and I'm gonna' go school again for you, just to get my equivalency diploma." The phrase has been in my head for over 30 years. We never really know the things that will ultimately have an impact on our minds. This group meant more to me than I knew. Boy, do we need them now.
Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band sure was ahead of its time. Do your thing, Miss Daye! Rest in peace, Stony. At one time, I had a crush on all the musicians in the band, especially Stony. I recently saw a photo of actor Laz Alonso, and when he wears that cap, he looks as if he could portray Stony Browder Jr. in a biopic about the band. Hmmm ... sounds like a great idea for a film!
Cory daye, an angel straight from heaven 💖💯
Cory had a really charming voice
Believe it or not I still have the vinyl and although I played the heck out of it, it's still in darn good shape! I loved this lp!! I just played it for a friend of mine, she could not believe she'd never heard of this group before (she's 51). She is buying asap!!
Live lead vocals!!
This is just so LUSH. There's nothing else like it today (insert dreamy sigh here)!
The epitome of class, talent and showmanship. Corey's voice is sent from God himself. Everytime I hear her, my soul wakes up. It's quite emotional .
GREAT! GREAT! GREAT!
MUSIC HAS LEFT THE BUILDING!!!🎤 THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES OF REAL TALENT!!!💯🎆2O2O
What a fucking great band that was. Class, irony, swing, groove. Everybody always (rightfully) say how great the band, how cool the arrangements and all, and that's all true. But one thing not many say is that these songs' melodies were absolutely p.e.r.f.e.c.t.

Daniele, I love your comment, so insightful, I feel like you do. Alan.
Coati was killin it with those dance moves. And Cory ❤️
This reminds me of Saturday nights when the adults would put on records and sit and drink and play cards. They would tease us kids about not knowing about "grown folks music". I didn't understand what they meant then but I do now. I just recently bought this on cd for myself and blast it in my car all the time. I get strange looks from time to time but who cares? This is MUSIC. Thank you Coati Mundi for the walk down memory lane.
Superb
Awesom Band!!!
Man, this is classic
What a wonderful Video!

Wow, Corry looks so good here and in the Cherchez La Femme clip! I can't get over how much she makes me think of an old family friend. You guys looked like you all had a blast doing this show! This album is one of my all time favorite albums in my life so far. Very fond memories of back in the day. Thank you so much for posted these videos Mr. Mundi.

Much missed times & omg played this album to death, hugs
Hi "slicksebring":Mucho merci & glad you like them. Don't know side players cause they were used solely for the broadcast. However the Bellhop singer on left is Debra Anderson who became part of "Stargard". One of the musicians is Joel Peskin a highly accomplished Sax player who I ran into much later on when I was music director for the televised Desi Awards Show & he was in the TV band. Bee well
ありがとうございます🎉

Nice footwork Coti--you are a "NUT" Love it man!!
Only one of their music I vaguely remember in 76, 77 but it just didn't seem to get play on SF radio stations and I was too young to get hip about going to record stoes in those days. Damn. Well, better late than never?
Good God, watching this vidoe of Dr. Buzzard and his right hand man Coati Mundi really overwhelmed me with emotion and great memories. What an era. A time when nusic was performed live by musicians. What a privilege it was to say I saw and heard this as a kid. As a kid I dreamed of playing trumpet with this orchestra. God bless these artists wherever you are. You made my world that much more beautiful!
we will never see talent luke this again...they won't make music like this anymore!

@MundiWorld Man I know it can be difficult but I would love to see you guys tour the US again. I heard Cory lives in Germany these days but a summer US tour would be EPIC.
I wish the video and audio were better; however, this'll do until I can watch a better quality recording of this performance.
She looks really great! Like MARTHA RAY! Martha had a great mouth! And great Leggs! And she could Hoof a little!
