Got this camera last week. After using iPhone as my main camera for the last 4 years, I got to see again how awesome photos from a good quality camera are.

@@dedclownsRfunny then rx100v is more than enough. Some even said it has better capabilities than later models I don't know.
I have been photographing for 54 years. The conundrum for me is that question, "Do we need all these features to capture a great image?" I think not. Over those decades I have used many brand name cameras (Rolleiflex TLR, 5 versions of Nikons, Canon 5DMIII, Contax N, several Olympus, Pentax and now Fuji X-H1). What I have learned is that there are only several things that I need to take a quality photograph: sharp lens with great resolution, very accurate spot AF and a terrific sensor. The rest of the stuff that they have piled into cameras is just that--stuff. I do like, however, the connectivity that is now commonplace within cameras. So, to my point: enjoy and learn while shooting on a basic camera. Experiment with the settings on your camera. Develop an "eye". You WILL develop your craft through practice, workshops, tutorials, etc. It is very satisfying in the end and your brain will love it!

Putting Chris in the centre of a golden spiral, well done Jordan!
Yesterday I used the Sony RX100 VII for the first time without reading any manuals or getting any hints. For someone like myself who is concerned about image quality and how it reflect on my services, I would choose to spend the money on this camera any day to get the better image quality over my Samsung S9 phone. After using the camera for a couple of hours I was driven to learn a bit more about what I am missing and so checked out this DPReview video. I've learned a lot of what other features to look for when I am out shooting with it today. Thanks for the hints of what to explore!
Wow, really appreciate the honest review. See a lot of KZreadrs doing camera reviews that only focus on the positives, I was thrilled watching this that you called out all the things you didn't like.
Really appreciate the listing of focal length in FF/35mm Equiv, makes it easy to understand! Thanks!
Still got my Rx100 V. That thing is a beast for a 1" sensor. I often used it more than my Sony A7M3 & A6400. Please Sony, put the 24-70mm, F1.8-F2.8 lens on that VII body and you'll have a mini-A9😍😍😍.

The model V has been canceled and replaced with VA which has model VI electronics. The new thing in VII is largely tied to the long lens.
@jbravo70

I hope they split the RX100 line like Sony did to the A7 line. Could you imagine if the did a 24-70 or 16-70 in f1.4 or f1.2??? For it to be perfect I think making a faster lens and putting a hot shoe on the opposite end of pop-up viewfinder. And full touch screen. And built in nd filter.
I always wait for your reviews.
I ordered a VII yesterday and sold my VI. Mostly for video in my case. I like the mic jack and better tracking focus. I'll be fitting it with a SMALLRIG cage, Crane M2 gimbal and RODE Wireless GO. Thanks for the review.

If you want a camera for video why not buy one specifically made for it alone? If you add the loss on the V1 and the cost of the V11 and all the extras you could afford (maybe used) a pro video camera.

I'm just here for the mic jack. Good video guys.
great review video. quick, good and honest explanation. Keep up the good work
Best camera review i have ever watched. Thanks guys.
I have the RX100V and the one thing that kept me from purchasing the RX100VII is not having a built-in ND filter. I took the 1st RX100 on vacation and found it challenging to shoot in bright sunlight, even @ ISO 100.
Thank you very much for this review. I’ve been thinking about buying this camera size version I came to market. Now I think it’s time to gear up.
the composition of the frame at 1:31 was so satisfying to see i enjoyed it a lot
As always - a very entertaining *and* informative video
Hands down the best reviews on KZread
I bought the first gen rx100. And am glad to see them keep polishing this product, though it've outgrown my pocket long long ago.
Really wish you guys included more sample shots and hit more on the low light issues as well as how well the zoom images come out in terms of stabilization and what not. Otherwise great review as always.
Thanks for the review! I've shot with the M6, and it's a great little camera. I'm sure this will be even better. The 24-200 range is nice for me, since I prefer the wide end or telephoto lenses. I don't really get all the love for 24-70....such a boring focal length range. I can live with f/4.5 for the big increase in versatility.
Excellent review guys! Love it. As always thorough and detailed. I’m sticking to M5 simply because of the ND filter. Big deal to me. Thanks for showing a solution on what can be done to fit an ND filter on this bad boy. Might consider that. Btw, do you guys think Sony will still release M3 of the RX1R? Any update on that one?
Great review and insights! Thanks
Great honest review! I remember the RX100 gen1's poor shutter feel. Lots of dust issues with these and probably worse with the 200mm version. I had a GR II as well, both were impressive, but also equally frustrating to use. I'd rather have a better/faster/fixed 24mm with better weather/dust seals. If they could integrate a switch directly to 85mm (or 135mm) it would be ideal for me. Most of the time I find myself shooting at the ends of zoom ranges. Adding a gimbal or monopod to a smartphone (pixel 3 owner) can yield incredible results these days. I was very optimistic when Sony started making devices likes the QX100. This would use the superior processing power/connectivity/storage features already available on a smartphone.
As always a charming video. I do admit to being intrigued by the RX100VII as a "leave the lenses at home" travel camera. My RX100III is great but limited in composition options. Bringing the VII as well would allow me to pick a portable for time if day and be ready for everything.

Chris Sony sells a handgrip (that works very well) for it so it's weird that they just can't put it on when they make it, the camera is expensive enough!
I saw a video of Markus Pix about this camera. Then wanted to learn more but the price still is a barrier. Thanks for another great review.
Thanks for the review! Mine is ordered and arriving in 3 days :) I'm a little worried about no ND filter though, might get the add on for some situations.

How was it?
Solid review as always. I agree with the thinking of why Sony went with the longer range lens because smartphones suck for zooming, but i also wished they released an f1.8 shorter focal range version like last time. An f1.8 on a 1” sensor is still gonna be better for low light shooting than a smartphone. Having said that, like a lot of people i tend to grab my smartphone over a point & shoot now for most of my daily shooting. It’s just all around better for convenience & for quickly sharing photos to social media. Plus these point & shoots are getting crazy expensive. I much rather invest in a Sony mirrorless a7s or r with some lenses for speciality shooting...and use my smartphone when i want to shoot fast & light. It’s just getting harder & harder to justify a point & shoot these days.
Funny review! Looks like you want everything best in the world in this camera! Good luck with it.
Hi, thanks for the interesting review. Chris, you haven't said if there has been an image quality improvement compared to the Sony RX100 Vi considering the Mark Vii has a new sensor. I would also like to know if there is any way to see the images you've taken in burst mode when reviewing them in playback mode. It's very annoying to have to wait to download the photos to a computer to check if you've got the desired pic.
Some cool frames in this video. Good eye, Jordan.
Your channel never disappointed me since....😁😁👌👌👌🙏🙏🙏
My first RX100 camera the VII will be with me by Wednesday I'm looking really forward to testing it out the AF tracking capabilities are great. 24-200mm zoom is very handy on travelling. Review was worth the wait good job guys. 👍
Another great video!
Great Review - Thanks !
The video quality on this review is excellent. Jordan, can you please share your GH5 setup used for this review? Lens, any ND filter, external recorder, etc.? Also, what picture profile was used? Any luts? Thanks.
This is an awesome review, great critical feedback! 👌 What are the best point-and-shoots you'd recommend that maximize optical zoom without sacrificing on image quality (preferably 1" sensor)?
hi thank you very much for that video. i have a question and hopefully you can reply. im just wondering for HOW LONG you can record continuous 4K Videos after the recording stops with the Sony RX100 VII . i tought there is kind of a limitation on 4k video? can you tell more about that please?
Brilliant review. Thanks. Still not sure if I need one over my iPhone 11. Maybe the mirror less Sony a6400 is the way to go?
I have 50 years of photography, currently I spend my day downloading RAW files from various manufacturers: Canon, Nikon, Sony, Leica, Lumix ... Honestly, I find no significant differences in the quality of the images that justify saying - this is good and that is lousy - All are great, since the Nikon D80 and Canon 50D nobody has done much better. It is necessary to exalt the photographer, that makes the difference.
When are you guys going to review the A9 with the 5.01 firmware?
Great revieuw 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
Great video, I am in the market for either this Sony RX100 VII or the Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark III for travel (hiking, geocaching and walking). I leave my DSLR D810 mostly at home when I travel and use the Samsung Galaxy s9. In the NLs the Sony is at cashback making it on par with the G7. Hard to choose.
As always, nicely done Chris. For those of us who consider printing our images: Can you comment on the quality of prints that you have produced using the camera, or if you don't print images, have you seen prints made from the images captured by the camera? Specifically, will prints from the camera surpass those possible from the iphone cameras? And of course, the price will cause many potential buyers to remain with their cell phones! Ilya
All very informative. Thanks! It would be great if the headphones were out. 😃
I was initially looking for a 1" sensor camcorder more for a "B-roll" type of shooting or short video sequences. After doing a lot of research, I realized that a good semi-pro camcorder is quite expensive, so I ended up my search with the RX100 VA and VII. The VII definitely covers my needs, is cheaper than a good 4K camcorder, is much more compact and it seems to produce the same (or better) image quality. The only downsides are the lack of built-in ND filters, but this problem is fixed with an external filter adapter, and the very limited bokeh effect from a smaller aperture lens, which is much better in the VA model.
Very informative. Thanks
Thank you for this very informative video. I have been trying to find out how to download the videos I shoot quicker. Using the wifi through the phone takes forever. And half of the time the video can't be processed. this is probably a stupid question. but I really would appreciate any help you can give me. Take care.
Eye tracking at wide angle - the WHOLE frame is sharp... Also, my Mk4 rx100 was very soft at 70mm, how are these long zooms holding up, sharpness wise?
Being that this camera is 4+ years old here in 2024, is there another camera like it that has come out recently we should consider instead?

Great review guys. I have a lot to think about. I'm using the Panasonic Lumix GX9. Is there a comparison worth talking about? This Sony is so compact. Yet is it for street protography or just a small travel camera?
You reviewed many advanced point and shoot, which one do you prefer the most and with the wow shocking features?

Michael S. Agreed. It is the lens with its ND that makes the V a compelling choice for many. At least offer two versions, one with the longer lens and one with the good lens.
"so much less to think about"..giving you more time to think about what new photo gear you might need.
This version of the camera needs to be the family/travel/light sports & wildlife version. They need to bring back the faster aperture 24-70 equivalent lens with integrated ND filter as a video and light portrait version version of this camera.

They do have the Mark VA for that. It is same as Mark VI but with 24-70 emm lens. Sure it lacks the mic connector. Sony keeps all the old models available, even the first one from 2012. Probably longest selling digital camera ever.
If I may ask, can you share what are your camera settings, should you use this camera mainly for recording these "chris&jordan" videos, any necessary accessory? Thank you.
thank you for all the great info and your well-educated observations. Love the camera, hate the price. I pass. I will either wait for the a6500 replacement or buy an a6500 used for $700. the benefits for compactness does not mask the steep price. I also realize that the technology is put into this small powerhouse is as good as it gets today, but not worthed for me personally.
Hi sir, nice video - I have a question on this camera. Can I control the aperture alone. Whenever I zoom the aperture value changes. Could you tell me why?
The lens of the G5XII would be nice on this and maybe some weather sealing. But it's just too expensive for what it is.
I really appreciate the review of the mark vii, but my question is, is it possible to take Long night exposure with it since i already have the dslr camera and i want to change with the mark vii ?
Thank you for a great video. i am planning to buy a portable Travel camera (am already owning Fujifilm XT4 with kit lens). which one Fuji X100V or Sony RX100 VII is best choice for me.? any suggestions?
Searched on DPreview for any link to all the cameras that do 12, 18, 22, 26, 28 FPS, but could not find any. I know GH4 and 5 have VFR at these rates, but not sure which other camera has it as well. If you can help. Thanks.
8:57 Hanging around your old stomping grounds, eh? ;-)
I recently went for a used RX100VI over these RX100VIIs due to great quality used copies going for around half the price. The A6400-type god tracking is amazing, but not "spend $650 more" amazing! Also, Sony where's the UHS-II slot?
Let’s wait and see what the Mark 8 brings us at the consumer electronics show this January, in a few days...
As for your final question: I'll keep buying those for as long as Sony makes them, but I need an option for a 16mm-55mm F1.8-F2.8 and a working digital Hot-shoe! (unlike the ZV-1)
wow, the stabilisation really works well
He got in the point, most cell phones already shoot a 24-70. Sony IS differentiating from that so I don't think the faster apature will make it back.

I think the vii is fantastic technologically speaking, but I'm going to keep holding on. They have yet to make the "perfect" RX100 model. I'm glad they're adding back in mic jack support, but I'm really holding out for the return of the 24-70mm 1.8 lens and built-in ND filter. I owned the RX100 iii for a time, and I loved it so much that I'm actually picking one up again. The lack of 4K and HLG on older ones is a bummer. For me the perfect RX100 would be the lens system of the RX100 iii with the features of the vii, plus a hot shoe.

Sony ZV-1 is out now and has 24-70mm f/1.8 -2.8 lens and a built in ND filter. Currently $750
I think the "vloggger" market has the ability to save the 1 inch / point and shoot market (or at least make it survive in it's niche like all other cameras are doing). Cellphones aren't full featured enough, and full video DSLR/Mirrorless are too bulky and complex. Whenever I'm on vacation anywhere I see lots of people making videos of their trip and trying to make them "youtube professional" instead of just a quick cell phone video. Lots of cellphones on handhold devices, stabilization mounts, and with franken-lenses attached to them; I've even seen cellphones on tripods. Many are willing to upgrade to something like a DJI Osmo to document their trips, and I think if you have a full featured stills camera that is also a high quality vlogging camera people will buy them even if it's only for their own 20 subscriber channel (many 100k+ full time vloggers are already using these cameras). The only gap now is they need ease of use, and lower prices. The key features for vlogging are becoming pretty standard: Flip up screen, mic jack, decent stabilization, and and arm length wide angle lens.

Dustin B hi - I would agree. I gave a small Sony camcorder which takes great video. But for family trips etc use the following:iPhone 7 & Filmic pro app. And handheld grip, Moment wide angle lens, Rode ext. mic. So although quite a set up it’s still small & portable. I suppose capitalism is making all these options available to filmmakers.😀
Jordan and Chris So when you going to review Blackmagic Pocket Cinema 6K
I look forward to seeing Chris’s water puddle coffee table book.
Nice little point and shoot , it seems price in Australia is just a fraction under 2K , ouch . By the time you buy a few batteries and probably a charger if sony does not supply a decent one (APU ) , it will be well into 2k territory .
Sony ZV-E10...A7C...RX10 IV.. Sony spitting out cameras and phones (don't ask me about phone model names, because Sony's naming schemes are as their production output: Throw everything on the wall, and see what sticks.) Nice reivew! Thanks. I've been a reader of the dpreiview for many many many years, and for some reason I thought Chris was Jordan and vice versa so now it can't be un-done in my head. 🙃
How's this compared to the Ricoh GR3? I know the GR is a fixed focal length but if the RX100 were also set to 28mm would it be on par with the GR3? I am planning to buy a RX100 so that it covers my vlogging and street photography needs.
Still juggling with Pana GX7, is it time to change? Olympus, Fuji or Sony?
Took 460 shots on a 2 hour shoot, plus uploaded many to my phone and battery was only half used. Not sure why Sony rates the battery life so low when in reality it works well. Maybe the settings I had for the vii helped?
Great review, thanks! When the RX100 VI was released, Sony updated the RX100 V with the VA, do you know if Sony will release a V-B with a mic jack while keeping the 24-70mm lens, ND filters while updating the software?

You're the first person to say they actually prefer the Canon lens(es) over the Sony's. I thought the Canon's are very soft. Apart from that, any view on image stabilization in photo mode? Has it improved since the Mk IV? I've used the Mk I and IV and am not a fan of their OSS.

how many problems have you encountered yet with the Ricoh GR3? dust or oil on the sensor? poor auto focus and battery? that IBIS "clunk">? the front ring fall off? no IOS wifi compatibility? :)
@PPYTAO
4 жыл бұрын
shawn None of those yet. My sensor is lovely and clean. Auto focus has been great for me, but I don’t tend to shoot much that requires super quick pin point critical focus in the dark. Battery isn’t the best, but I usually shoot on my lunch break, or walking through the city between public transport and work, so it hasn’t died on me yet (~100-300 shots a day). And when I do eventually get out for a full day of shooting I’ll make sure I have a 2nd battery, standard practice really. The IBIS is actually barely noticeable at all, so no issues there. My front ring has fallen off once while I was removing it from my point and shoot pouch. I’m not sure if that was an old firmware issue but wifi works flawlessly on iOS for me. One of the more straightforward smart phone connections I’ve used on a camera tbh. As for actual issues, 1 in every few hundred photos when shooting jpeg seems to corrupt and is not viewable in camera. And I once had a very strange OS freeze that took a couple of battery removals and restarts to sort out.
Thanks guy's.
I eagerly anticipate the release of the Sony RX100 Mark VIII, hoping for exceptional specifications at a price point of €1499. I'm are prepared for this investment. My desired specifications include: -4K resolution at 60 fps with 10-bit depth -4K capability at 120 fps with 10-bit depth -Integration of a high-quality 3.5mm audio jack -Aperture options of at least f/1.4 or f/1.8 to facilitate captivating background blur -Utilization of Sony's latest and most advanced 1-inch sensor technology -Implementation of 32-bit audio recording directly within the camera, a feature that would be truly remarkable -Integration of USB-C for convenient charging from power bank batteries -Enhanced touchscreen functionality -Improved software interface -Better lowlight video recording like a a7s3 -Maintaining the renowned build quality characteristic of the RX100 series, ensuring durability akin to that of a tank. Take my money Sony please bring back the rx100 line up please in God's name. God bless Japan for best tech in the world.
I've loved this lineup since the mark I but so far can't afford it.
I had the first rx100 , took some excellent shots with it...now my iphone pretty much takes its place while out and about, if I need higher quality photos i break out the a6300 with nice lenses ....unless i was needing a vlogging camera I dont really have a need for this line anymore and no way would I shell out over 1.2k for it
Is this worth buying for the photo quality when you have an iPhone XS?
I feel the G5x II is best for stills. Probably would pony up for the RX VII if video was a higher priority.
Should we still wait for the rx100 viii ?
I would like VII to has location tracking feature (like GPS). Photos are memories and locations are important for memories as well.
If we talk about the video, The RX100 VI and RX100 VII are 35% closer to the 20X optical zoom of the camcorder, thanks to the long end of 200mm. Therefore, the RX100 VII can be considered as a compact replacement for a video camera with poor OIS, but with a 1"sensor from PRO-segment video cameras for $2000 or more. It's damn expensive anyway! Any amateur 4K camcorder will have less noise in low light conditions, as small 2/3 sensor noise is easier to quench than large 1"sensor grains. Compare PANASONIC HC-VX1 4K Camcorder, Sony FDRAX53 / B 4K Camcorder with RX100 VII in low light conditions with auto settings, and you will understand what I'm talking about.
The Sony RX100 series has always been too small for me. I used the RX100 M2 for a weekend & it was just too small. When is the RX10 V coming out? It’s been almost 2 years since RX10 IV.
Thank you
U r wearing a Jacket in Aug..is it that cold up North??
Have Sony updated the Firmawre to enable full functionality on the screen?
Wish Sony will make RX-100 viii with hot-shoe and a wide angle version with 16-50 f1.8-f2.8? Work with rx-10 vi or rx-10 v ?
