Down Your Way - Classic Theme Tune and Continuity - BBC Light Programme 1964

Ойын-сауық

Down Your Way was a long-running Sunday afternoon BBC radio programme that travelled from town to town the length and breadth of the UK to meet regular people and to play their musical requests.
It ran from 1946 to1992 and famous presenters from different eras included David Dimbleby, Franklin Engelmann and Brian Johnston.
The programme switched between the BBC Light Programme and the Home Service and then in its later decades it was broadcast on Radio 4.
Down Your Way's evocative theme tune was 'Horse Guards, Whitehall' from the London Landmarks Suite by Haydn Wood.
Strange but true: Franklin Engelmann was an NBC presenter before he joined the BBC in 1940. In 1955 he was the first presenter of Pick of the Pops in the era before it became the hit parade show.
In this clip you'll hear Pick of the Pops with Alan 'Fluff' Freeman signing off, followed by a Light Programme continuity announcement, followed by the Greenwich Time Signal marking the top of the hour (note that the six pips are of equal length unlike today - the last pip was extended during the 1970s).

I loved down your way. It took people to places in the British Isles that they had never been to.
