i have spent so much time in the early access Subautica, it felt so mysterios and otherworldly. i never thought about liminal space back then, but man is that a good word to use to describe it. so creepy. i also remember finding a human model in the middle of the old lava zone that scared me. felt so creepy.

Yeah it's just something about the endless walls with the same repeating texture which drop off into the abyss that really get to me :)
@zinc2zinc2
5 ай бұрын
@TheLastBacon that too! The finished subnautica feels more natural and earthlike. But the endless oceans, the strange terrain and drop offs to the void in the early access feels so alien like!
@earsaurus8215
5 ай бұрын
@@zinc2zinc2 I mean it is kinda alien like, it’s litterly an alien planet, but yeah I agree
I don't think the hellhole was removed so much as moved elsewhere. It's the precursor to the mountain pass that leads to the Lost River and the lava zones. Though I do think that even littered with reaper bones, the translucent life of the river and the destroyed precursor facility, the early access one retains a more eerie feeling - the same one the void has before the ghost leviathans were added - because you know you're not meant to be there.

HOW MANY LOST RIVER ENTERANCES ARE THERE?!?!
@ultmateragnarok8376
Ай бұрын
@@Trainboi1983 Six, technically. Two from the lava zone, one of which leads to the cove tree and the other to the pit in the pass to the mountains, and four to surface or near-surface cave biomes - two to the blood kelp zones, one to the deep grand reef, and one to the border between the moutains and bulb zone. The lost river spans most of the crater in size, hence its own distinct internal biomes.

Man, I still remember watching people play these versions back in like 2014. It seemed so cool and mysterious. I remember having the same feeling when I bought BZ in early access, but unfortunately, same as with original Subnautica, it never lived up to it's full potential.

Looking at the lava castle in this build is insane. Like there is a giant cave rn next to it and massive bodies of water afterwards. Definitely more true to the original concept arts of the lava zone! Both work well but i prefer the old against the new because of the massive space. (Probably better for the sea dragon AI and maybe an explanation on why there a seamoth attack animation in the first place.)

The open locker was a thing in a lot of early subnautica builds iirc. I figured it was just decorative. I think this was just before the devs actively made getting into "spoiler" areas impossible. Hence why the route I mentioned in the previous video didn't actually go anywhere.

Thanks for revisiting old subnautica early access builds, this is such a nostalgia trip for me since these were my introduction to subnautica, I'm almost tempted to go back to them myself for funsies but you are clearly a braver man than I am Also, this makes me think about the concept of a game in which you have to go back to early access builds to unravel misteries, something like saved games are compatible but the deeper you go, the creepier it gets kinda? I dunno, maybe someday someone will read this comment and make something or maybe someone is already working on it or maybe it already exists, I dunno

I honestly think they should have kept this sort of liminal/uncanny feeling (even tho it was very likely not on purpose on the early access). for me it's a pity that there are no such tunnels to the lava biome, that it used to be through crashzone through deepgrand and dunes, because if it were, it could explain the story of reaper leviathan, how he got there, because it suited me, and because he passed through deepgran and lostriver, I don't think so like he really got it and with those tunnels they could explain the leviathan reaper skeleton

JIZAI ARMS designed by Daisuke Uriu and his team at the University of Tokyo is a wearable robotic limb system that consists of a backpack-mounted base unit with six ports, each of which can be used to support a detachable robotic arm. It is still in the early development stage, but has already shown great potential for exploring the possibilities of social interaction between digital cyborgs, helping people with disabilities, and creating new forms of art and entertainment. I always was scared but also curious, I wanted to see where that leaded, what was waiting me down there, specially since I didnt even thought about the possibility of it being just an unfinished area, for me, that was truly a biome, an empty and eerie biome

I mean, it is still in the game, just obviously not as creepy as the early access one because it's actually finished and decorated. It's in the bulb zone right in front of the Aurora, and goes straight down past some Reaper skeletons, and into an entrance to Lava Zone patrolled by a Ghost Leviathan. I once had the Sea Dragon chase me out of the Lava Zone through that entrance and it was literally like the underwater chase in The Phantom Menace, with the Sea Dragon behind me and the Ghost Leviathan in my pathway out.

Anytime I watch earlier Subnautica videos and see things like the entrances to the lava zone being the hell hole as well as an opening in the Dunes, it makes me wonder what made the developers work on entrances there, and then scrap the ideas entirely and go with a different placement. Like, I'm glad we at least got the mountain corridor, but it still makes the Sea Dragons dragging Reapers into the lava zone make a lot less sense without the openings in front of the Aurora as well as the dunes. Like, yea, if you had gone those routes, you would have missed the Lost River. But also those would have also been a lot more of a dangerous route to get down there anyway
