Down The 'Grave Robbing For Morons' Rabbit Hole

Ever since the late 90's tape the underground vhs trading scene has been circulating a tape that seems to show an individual giving a tutorial on how to rob graves and sell the bodies on the black market for profit.
Despite wide circulation, almost nothing is known about the tape leading to the legend of "Anthony" the internet's favorite grave robber.
In this video we explore the origins of this tape as well as some new information and explore the broader world of body snatching for profit.

From what I understand his previous wife or girlfriend was the one who tipped off authorities and he was also trying to set up an marketplace which allowed people to sell oddities outside the reach of Facebook. I would gladly review any new info if there's something there but understand I'm very skeptical. I've reviewed the court docs it looks pretty bad. Although he was the furthest removed in the Harvard situation

@@SlightlySociablethe media only posted what was released publically, there is a LOT that has yet to become public information. For one his ex wife was making the human skin bracelets and called the authorities claiming she knew nothing about his work (which is as a licensed restorative museum), the only involvement he has with Harvard was a woman who was stealing sold him (and many others not listed yet) these items under false pretenses, you’ll notice his name is in every single article but the deeper you dive you’ll notice the informations gets more and more skewed, the tattoos sadly have everything to do with it. Once the federal case is finished I will be speaking publicly on everything, you’ll also notice his ex wife is slandering him to no end during the time the criminal case is going knowing he can’t all about it - attempting to distance herself. Jeremy was a 3rd party, unknown buyer, much like a ton of other people the feds haven’t indicted yet, he simply didn’t know where things were coming from. Which is why most the charges were dropped. I have a books worth of folders piling up that I’m happy to discuss with you, unlike everyone else hiding from the case, Jeremy has nothing to hide

@@SlightlySociable for context there are quite literally 2.5 million (and counting) pages of information the public has yet to see To add to this, I am completely on the side of unregulated human remain sales being addressed and laws being enforced to protect donated remains, we are currently working with authorities to push for these laws. That is why we are so public through all this with what is happening, there is an incredibly dark side to medical antiques, and as I told Philadelphia times, this has been the best thing to happen to the “oddity” community, otherwise those stealing donated remains would still be doing it. Despite my frustration over the media targeting Jeremy, it has helped put focus on some serious issues happening (Facebook is the tip of this iceberg)

There are lot of old edgy 80s/90s underground vhs tapes that went circulating/floating around during that era, and most of them are completely lost to time. So the fact we can still even see this tape is pretty fascinating, clearly it must've been intriguing enough for people to keep spreading for years, until the internet took full force. (Firstly, ignore possible errors in my English). In Brazil we have a very grotesque case, well hushed up by the media and the national state, regarding the negotiation of organs from a boy who was still alive. There was a big scheme (with evidence and defendants) where patients were neglected/intentionally killed for organ trafficking. In the end, the boy ended up passing away, his father is still in court to this day trying to bring those responsible to the appropriate punishments, despite a great persecution against him from the government and the mainstream media ignores the scandal. The case happened in the early 2000s, and the boy's name is Paulo Pavese. I believe this is a big rabbit hole and could be covered in a future video.

I suppose I got a little bit lucky, or at least I choose to believe as much in lieu of exculpatory evidence one way or the other. My grandpa was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer in December '00 and managed to beat the odds for 20 more years with an experimental trial (from which he was the only survivor) and several surgeries/procedures along the way. His body was donated to a local college for graduate dissection projects and has since been cremated and returned to us. My point in all this is that, in the memorial service dedicated to all the donors of that period, one of the students gave a small speech about her experience with the project and her gratefulness to those who donated, and in her description of the nature of her experience I was 99% convinced that she was describing my grandfather. I can never be sure of this, of course, but it seems to me that his body was truly used for its intended purpose.

So I'm going to go out on a limb here, but if the title of the video was named by the kids who made the actual video the title alone would put the date of the video after 1991. The reason why I say this is the whole "for dummies" series of books were first made in 1991 with DOS for Dummies, but the books as a whole didn't really hit mainstream popularity till "Windows for Dummies" hit the mainstream in 1992 and would go on to sell over 15 million copies. Now, it's possible the person who named it "Grave Robbing for Morons" probably did so shortly after taking the VHS and digitizing it, but the title seems to indicate maybe this didn't happen till around the mid 90s if I had to guess. Anyway, I'm not saying that the title having "for Morons" in it means this particular video had to have been early 90s, but based on the popularity of the Dummies books and that title, I am guessing this probably means it was originally digitized no later than the late 90s. Just wanted to mention two other things that might help... It's possible it was first spread through BBS, in fact. I know several of the old BBS's that I would visit back in the early to mid 90s had some crazy stuff on them, not just pirated games and porn, but some even had sections of the sites for VIPs that had some of the weirder things or the macabre. I remember one BBS in the Midwest had things like digitized versions of the original Faces of Death and Traces of Death series, supposed snuff films (these were always fake), bestiality, swingers videos, and other movies or videos that were banned or that you just couldn't rent in the 80 and 90s. There was a trend of people making fake videos to get access on these sorts of networks as VIPs just to get access to the porn parts of the BBS. Given the fact that a lot of the films on these BBS were fake, I could see something like this being fake, too. This video could very much have an origin from one of these 90s BBS networks, but you'd have to find sysops from the East Coast if you wanted to continue the investigation further. Also, some college networks back in the mid to late 90s had students coming in with their computers that could share stuff for free and you could go around snooping on people's shared drives on their computers for stuff, some of them even had people who set up indexers to search all these devices for stuff and would link it. It's possible this is the kind of video that would have circulated maybe on one of those East Coast college networks back in the mid to late 90s, too. Again, I'm not saying it's not real, but if it is, it must be like the 1% of the videos from the mid to late 90s that actually were real. :/

It wouldn’t mean much to most, but I’m so fascinated by these stories of the early internet because I was too young to really make full use of it. I’d love to see somebody contact Simon Predj, the KZread uploader, to ask where he got the footage from - was it an old BBS? was it off of one these comp VHS or a solo VHS from a trader? - and then follow that lead as far as it will go.

@@CantTellYou I asked Simon where he got it and he said he got it from the ensuring your place in hell compilation. But apparently he's heard from sources that the original creator sold it years ago to a porn producer back in the mid to late 90s. And from there on, it was just passed around the underground rare VHS/oddities community. Even he has no clue where it came from sadly. And also, he doesn't know if it's real or fake. I wish there was a way we could figure out what porn producer Anthony originally sold it to and trace it back that way. Otherwise, there's no way of finding a trail because this happened so long ago. I just feel like if the film was fake or staged in any way, the guys involved (Anthony or Gino, even taco or pucci who were mentioned towards the end of the video) would have come forward to claim ownership and to get their rights for profits. But out of the four men involved, none have done so. Which tells me that the video is probably real and they are embarrassed by it and don't want to be associated with it out of fear of being doxxed or arrested. I don't think they would even get in trouble though. The grave robbery happened so long ago so the statue of limitations should be up by now on that crime. Unless Anthony is deceased or in an even weirder twist, what if both men are deceased or they are in prison for another crime and have no idea their old video is internet famous?? The whole situation is so intriguing to me. I love the mystery.

100% agree. I picked up on the "for dummies" allusion and mentioned it in my other comment. other signs pointing to the 90s: -fast, accurate autofocus on a camcorder that a kid could afford -it's easy for the cameraman to turn the camera 180, suggesting strongly this is not a bulky shoulder mounted VHS camcorder, but a slimmer video 8 or hi-8 90s type -The fade-ins and fade-outs suggest that this was edited in post. Early video editing hardware like the Video Toaster didn't really appear for consumers until the very late '80s and early 90s and were quite expensive. It was possible to edit on a computer in the early 90s but the resolution would be visibly low and digitized and the setup would've been prohibitively expensive for most people. Buying enough RAM to even run video editing software xost a fortune, and the kits even came with a clamshell VHS tape teaching you how to install it.

Finding that out would feel very complicated, because if it hadn't happened you would still be suffering or have had to pay even more for a more limited demand. It's easy to hate the people making a profit on it, but with people dying every day from lack of organ transplants, who knows what the situation would be without the red market? It's not the vague benefits of research or training, it's the one to one improvement of life. It's like if the only options were obscene pharmaceutical profits or not allowing medical manufacturing to cover it's costs. If there was a tissue graph that would heal my fibromyalgia and there either wasn't any available or I couldn't afford it, it would be hard for me not to justify stealing it. Oh your idea of your dead loved one being whole is more important than my ability to live pain free without fatigue? Ok, maybe I'd just stand in front of a funeral home and emotionally guilt trip people.

If it were real, how far would the psychopathy go of the character 'Anthony' ? Putting my horror film storytime hat on - so 'Anthony' gets a kick out of saying into a camera on record about not leaving witnesses while he has people witnessing his words. They're too dumb or trusting or naive and so he ends up killing them then processing the bodies thru his trade. After not getting caught for grave robbing or murder of his friends/associates....his ego takes a bashing. SO he feeds the VHS tape out onto the dodgy bootleg video market. The he sits back and revels in his infamy. Later in life it hits the internet and now he's old enough to high likely not get recognised so he sits back again and feeds his ego as people are either disturbed or amazed that we don't know anything about him.

The sign Anthony flashes at the end, is called the "shaka" in Hawaii. He does it like a local (tourists, especially in the 90s, did a weird wiggly version), but he doesn't have too much of a pidgin accent, so he might have ties to Hawaii. Either a fresh transplant, or someone who left the islands young, os if close friends with someone from the area. His unusual speech impediment and broken nose are so distinctive, it's difficult to believe that no one recognizes this guy.

@@herpaderp-bp4pe I'm not sure that I should give away his information. I forgot all about his grave robbing video until I happened to come across this today. I haven't spoken to him for many years and last I knew he was in college studying law. Years ago a mutual friend told me he was working as a public defender. He probably doesn't want his information being connected to this video anymore.

@@mikescott5440 Okay, fair enough. You didn't have to tell me his full name though, Mike. I just wanted to know if his real first name was Anthony or not. This is a huge internet mystery that many of us are trying to solve but. I guess I'm not expecting to ever know his identity if he wants to stay anonymous. The main information I wanted to know, was if this video is real or if it's staged? Do you happen to know? I also wanted to know if "Anthony" is still alive. If he really did put the illegal activity behind him(if he really was a real grave robber), and tried to better his life. Then that's amazing! I honestly have seen so many people claim to know him. Saying he died or was murdered. So, if what you are saying is true then I'm happy for him. He should never be ashamed of this film though. There's actually a lot of people who loved this film and thought he was an amazing actor. If he ever came out to tell his story behind it, I think people would actually respect that he changed his life for the better. Thank you so much for sharing this information with me though. There's a group on reddit with close to 300 people who are trying to solve this mystery of Anthony's identity. But I'll pass this information along to the group. The last thing I would ever want to do is invade Anthony's privacy if he doesn't want to be found.

@@CP-he7qy The bones are real but he was not a grave robber. It's something much less dramatic than that. It was just a kid making a funny video. I haven't watched it in a long time but I always thought that was pretty apparent from the start due to the dialogue. Some of the things he says are pretty ridiculous. I'm so surprised to find out that there is so much interest in this old video, I had no clue it had become internet lore.

Maybe they were just odd kids, outsiders, who were into horror things. The camera guy, Pouchy or wtr was interested in horror movies, thus all the magazines and zombie films, while the Anthony kid was a crazy one who robbed graves 2 times, but he liked to brag and over-exaggerate it, like many teenagers do, to make him look more experienced and cool (killing witnesses etc). He did a lot of research on the topic, and probably heard experiences from other body snatchers. He definitely heard a story about Anthony C. and probably idolised him. That's why he used his name in the end. I think he's not acting but of course, he knows he's on camera, so he want's to share his knowledge with the world lol.

I hear ya on most of that. But wasn’t the real “Anthony C” in the papers several years after this was likely to be filmed? (Assuming this was shot in the late 80s or early 90s, and Anthony Cassamassina’s case was after 1995 - I can only find an article from ‘99 regarding his witness testimony)

Fascinating stuff but ultimately my executive management did not want to take body parts as collateral even though they’re actually very easy to liquidate in event of default. Great money in the industry but there’s only I believe 7 in the US.

@SlightlySociable Great analysis. I'm really going to have to tear my house apart to find the 90's catalog that I saw this in... I used to get a lot of the vhs copy/bootleg catalogs and I still have them somewhere... I'm thinking the catalog in particular that may have had this was called "Catalog of Carnage" which I first rifled through in 1994, and I actually got my own copy in 1996. It advertised horror, mondo/death, exploitation, and bizarre/uncategorized vhs bootlegs, as well as human skeletons/bones, and also had a bound in Alchemy Gothic catalog. I searched online, but couldn't find anything. When I find it, (will hunt the house this weekend,) I will let you know and if my memory held up and its in there or another catalog, I can send it to you if you want.

I found and went through the Catalog of Carnage as well as 3 other companies video catalogs and none of them have this in them. Checked under both Grave Robbing and Ensuring titles. I had leaned on it being listed in Carnage, being that it was a 1996-97 update of their '94 edition and the oldest one I have, and all the other companies' catalogs being from late 90's to early 00''s. I'm absolutely certain I have seen it listed, but due to the above, it must've been later than I recalled, either in a different print catalog (least likely) or via one of the video sellers new-at-the-time online catalogs (most likely; damn I'm old af,) so whenever/whereever I saw it, it wouldvd had to be between 1998 and early 2003 (I know this timeframe cause it's when I finally copped an all region dvd player, but also incidentally when a slew of companies started flooding the market with brand new dvd releases of obscure/foreign horror/cult/mondo/oddity films originally released anywhere from the 60's to the 90's.) Tldr, the 2 cents I threw out amounts to f*ck all as far as serving any use towards narrowing down a date for the subject video (but you can now identify at least one person that has watched serious levels of visual tripe, then again, here we are on KZread...)

  • @SoelGriffin

One more cent, though this is purely conjecture (Soc, I mightve even missed you maybe putting forth the same thought,) but its gonna make me go back through them catalogs again, with more tedium... I'd expect that the true original release of this would have been under a completely different title than either Grave Robbing for Morons or the compilation Ensuring Your Place In Hell. Why? Well both these sound like a 2nd hand take on the video's subject. Additionally the many one-off typically un-named amateur productions filmed and distributed to friends or trading circles (or if shot in the last 15 years, just upped to YT, TT, or one of the many ul networks,) that reached the video seller catalog outfits and subsequently included in their catalogs for sale, a number of said outfits would opt to give their own name to their offering of a specific tape, either a close variant on the name it was most commonly encounted under when obtained in the trading circles, or oh-so slightly less commonly, a name more befitting of the particular outfit/catalog's morbidly twee sense of humor.

    1. Social media is very immediate, you publish without a barrier of editing or having to make copies and hand them over. The time and effort put in makes a person think "whoops I'll just edit this part out". 2. Posting on social media is pissing in an ocean of piss. The vastness of it all makes people believe their stuff won't be seen by the authorities. When you're handing off tapes, you are the one guy making that one tape. How many tapes like those existed? It wouldn't get lost in a sea of odd content as so few were producing it at home.
