Yes, but of course, you know as well as I, we are doing the very opposite in the English speaking world. We have though the ideas and art on our side, a magnificent cultural inheritance. We are not asked to storm a beach or live in a muddy hole, but somehow must find the ways to pass along what to us was given. The men who died at places like the Somme were not deluded victims of state indoctrination, they and their wives and sisters never believed their country perfect, just that it was capable of improvement and, if for no other reason, thus better than the alternative. It would be a start to return to that. The left believes they can destroy our civilisation by pointing up imperfections in our past. They come not for the obvious targets but for the very best of us, for Churchill, for Lincoln, believing that by discrediting even our best beloved they can condemn the whole civilisation. They teach that because we are not, never have been, perfect, we cannot be good, our history is a shame, the future our come uppance. They get away - unlike previous attackers of western civilisation - with not offering an alternative, no communist utopia (for obvious reasons!). They instead suggest it doesn't matter what comes in its place. As nothing can be so bad, anything would be an improvement on what has come down to us. We should not let them get away with this. If we are so bad what's the alternative? Or (as Douglas Murray has said) compared to what? What other tradition allows evils to be criticised from within and over time corrected? Is that not the killer question? We should teach warts and all but also the internal opposition at the time and subsequent developments.

I find it utterly absurd that anyone would think that the huge land of Australia would still belong to a group of people who in thousands of years had not developed a single thing. Enjoy Aboriginal culture for what it is but don’t pretend it’s something it’s not. Australia is now a prosperous, successful country that many want to get to. It certainly would not have been the case before that.
