Douglas Adams: The Man and his Galaxy

Enjoy a rich and revealing tribute to Douglas Adams with one of his most renowned collaborators, the comedy producer John Lloyd, who produced the original radio series of Hitchhikers. He is joined by Douglas’s brother James Thrift and another legendary radio producer, Dirk Maggs. Hosted by Dick Fiddy of the BFI.
This conversation was filmed at the British Library on 8 March 2020, as part of a day-long celebration, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy at 42!
Douglas Adams was an author, screenwriter and satirist who is best known for The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, which started as a 12-part radio series that aired between 1978 and 1980; it was followed by a series of five books that have sold over 15 million copies worldwide. His other works include satirical detective novels Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency (1987) and The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul (1988). He also co-wrote The Meaning of Liff with John Lloyd (1983) and Last Chance to See with Mark Carwardine (1990). Adams died of a heart attack in 2001, aged only 49. He remains one of the most popular, widely read humorists of our time.
Film produced by Kevin Jon Davies.

Love THGTTG and all that followed. I drove my parents mad for weeks laughing hysterically as I read out loud from The Meaning of Liff (and, yes, I did know there were 2 authors)! Thanks for the interesting background stories - added a whole lot more to my appreciation of the man, his work, and the people around him.

I'm in two minds as to be either entertained or saddened by this. I have just finished reading the entire five books to my podcast 'TortyTalks' and like everyone else found the end somewhat depressing but, from an environmentalist's view terribly compelling. Yes, obviously it's funny, but if I start to get in to the minds of the characters I have performed over the last year, especially Random, I feel the pain that drove him all too deeply. Bloody funny though :-) Thanks folks... (sob).

I'm surprised they couldn't get Stephen Fry to also attend, he and Adams were very good friends.

Love the Hitchhiker's Guide Radio series, the Books and the TV Series but I really didn't like the Movie (2005). Terrible.

I've never seen it, but it has a particularly bittersweet tinge to it as Douglas died during its long and torturous production. I often wonder what the movie would have been like it he'd seen it through to its conclusion.
