I just realized this. John idolized this guys since he was a kid. He listened to them all day long. He grew and actually played with his idols. It is very sad that Stevie isn't here to play with them also.

He's blues influenced but not a bluesman. I actually hear lots of positive things about John from the blues community, but there's nothing surprising about blues purists or semi-purists not accepting someone into their circle that has never released a single blues album.

Relyks I wouldn't call the John Mayer Trio blues exactly. More blues influenced than any other work his done. Also the blues communities King.. BB to be exact.. welcomed him all the time. Buddy Guy as well. Eric Clapton who is not exactly blues but.. has at least put out a blues album has called him a master guitarist.

That was better then expected back from the future in 01/21. I remember my subscription of Guitar Players Magazine with John Mayer on the cover with a replica SRV Guitar..... I ripped the cover off my new favorite magazine , cause at that time JMayer was an Obnoxious Person , purcieved by my gathering of material at that time.... After his first ,Eric Clapton Cross Roads Festival ,John became way more Down to Earth and started becoming a much better guitar player. And continues to be a great guitar player..... I see Double Trouble , and I miss SRV for them and myself.

People, grow up. For those who actually have extensively listened to this and the original Empty Arms, it is obvious that it is a take on it, and a quite good one, might I add. People need to quit comparing Stevie Ray Vaughan and John Mayer. He is paying tribute to one of the greatest guitarists in the world. This is an honor, not a guitar slinging contest. If Stevie saw this comment thread, he would be appalled at what you all are saying. Enough said.

John Mayer did an excellent job on this, there is too many people criticising him here, someone mentioned his guitar being not loud enough, that comment tells me that commenter hasn’t got a clue about playing . The difference between Mayer’s version and SRV’s version is that John’s guitar tone is cleaner than Stevie’s, less distortion than Stevie’s, that’s what you’re all hearing. For me, it’s as good a cover as you ever hear and I’m sure DT would agree.

John Mayer is our generations Stevie. But they do completely separate things. No one does SRV better than SRV. And no one does John Mayer Better than John Mayer. There are plenty of guitar players that do things better than John Mayer; there are plenty that do worse. It is stupid to compare them as you do.

@@spyr5390 Sure, if your definition of exact is playing the guitar or the blues, then you are correct. They are both incredibly great guitar players and musicians, but to say they do the exact same thing is insult to both of them. John is a huge disciple of SRV, he grew up listening to him. But he has a completely different feel than him. They both sound drastically different. You could make the argument that John was in a SRV/Pearl Jam tribute band in high school, but that's the closest he came trying to be exactly like Stevie. Me, in my opinion, feel it is stupid to compare guitarists to see who is better. And also saying two guitarists are exactly alike. I'm not sure why you do it. But that's my two cents.

There's playing an SRV song. THIS is playing one of his best on THAT stage with Double Trouble behind him. And they sounded great.

SRVs guitar playing is best but John's voice is more appealing. It's sad he couldn't play with his idol like SRV played with Albert. May they rest in peace

Always has blown my mind at just how much Johns singing sounds like SRV. If you close your eyes & envision Stevie singing it’s pretty damn cool fo sure

Only recently I realised the similarity between SRV's 'Empty Arms' and JM's 'Blues (intro)' off As/Is album. clever

I think it’s a lot more similar to the intro to Everyday I have the blues Live at the Regal by BB King
