Thank you! Unfortunately, there is a lack of teachers where I live, so I am trying to unlearn bad habits. Thought I would start with the basics. This helps A LOT!

I recently came over to the double bass from electric bass and i've been having a lot of back problems. In my experience the part of letting your left leg relax to meet the bass puts all the weight on your right leg and creates more issues. I can't seem to figure out a good comfortable stance

You're correct about that. It is an issue for some people. Playing the bass is all about finding compromises and finding what ultimately works for you. One solution some people use is a bent end pin that gets the bass into a different balancing angle and allows your legs to be more even. The more common solution is to play seated on a stool. Within that, there are several different approaches people use to sit comfortably while playing. The one thing you have to make sure of, though, is that whatever you do, the bass has to be controlled by your body and not held up with the left hand. I also have a video on playing while seated that you might find helpful.

good job! besides-- are you good with engaging with music mashups using Bandhub?? I oftentimes love playing piano. You and I might double up in that site! That'll be great!

Have you ever tried a bent endpin like e.g Rabbath does?

It improved my standing experience a lot. I never ever complain about any "holding issues" since

I have an EggPin that I used to use all the time - it's a fully adjustable angled end pin that doesn't seem to be made anymore. It definitely solved several physical problems for me. I don't stand to play as much these days, so I don't bother with it any more. This video is intended to be a plain vanilla sort of introduction to basic position, so that's why I don't mention it as an option. Someone who goes far enough on the instrument will eventually come across the bent endpin and many other options people use to solve the physical problems of playing the bass.

Great video -- maybe too long? Endpin height, IMO, is set for proper bow placement, and not anything to do with relationship of nut and your eyes.

Endpin height is a compromise like most other things. The nut/eye thing usually gets you in the ballpark for starting out. The real trade off is in how to balance bow placement with 1/2 position placement. Set it higher, and you can reach more easily with the bow, but your left hand may have to reach behind your head for 1/2 position. Set it lower, and your left shoulder can be more relaxed, but you might play too close to the fingerboard and lose tone quality. The real kicker is that a lot of players play over the fingerboard anyway. If you raise the bass for them, they just bend their elbow more while they bow and still get a thin sound!
