    This is just what I needed. I have been a German bow player for over 35 years and I want to be able to use a French bow as well. This was the perfect introduction especially after you told us you were primarily a German bow player.

    Thanks Seth! I did find a problem w/ my technique. This is the most concise information short of a personal instructor I have found. Grazie, Maestro!

    Thank you so much. I am a pizz player mainly. I play avant garde jazz where the bow is used for effect . I always thought I needed a German bow for volume but I can draw a loud sound now after I got the fulcrum concept down. For even what I do, like very long tones for a drone effect, this video has helped me relax and accomplish it without pain and numbness. Thanks @Seth Gamba

    Hello. thank you very much for your teachings. I being playing the double bass for about 20 years now but I started with the bow for about 2 years ago. It is very important to hold the bow correctly, makes playing easier. In my case, I was holding it almost right but, almost, that you show, just small details, makes the difference, even if I have now to change a little bit the position, it is worth the effort.

    Great video ! I live in Belgium and of course we're learning the French bow at the academy/conservatory (I'm in second year). The biggest problem I have is indeed the "oblique" look of the bow while playing. The intentions are good but from the player's point of view, it's not always easy to see if the bow is 100% perpendicular to the strings. My teacher always reminds me of that problem. My wrist is not "valley" enough too. Thanks for the lesson, I'll try the tips to be more relaxed on the right hand but somehow I have the feeling my bow is a bit too heavy ...

    Very helpful! I simply have one question. I am playing a five string electric double bass, and I noticed that when I go to play on the high G string my elbow will tend to bend a bit more so that I can reach it better without accidentally bowing the D string along with it. Is this an issue, or is it normal?

    I've got short wide hands,stubuluby fingers & so when I'm holding mon French Bow, as close to how you describe above , I'm with you 100% EXCEPT for my middle finger, It seems to line up with ferrel, not the 3rd finger...But my Bow feels pretty balanced & I'm not getting pain in R hand.. does this mean I'm going to Bass Hell ? haha and can you teach some vibrato lessons while in TP please? & I've recently started getting really bad sciatica pain since I've been practicing intensely w/ the bow in Thumb Position .. so now I'm sitting on a stool... has this happened to you? thnx again for another great lesson!

    Bass Hell it is for you, J.P.! Seriously, though, you have to find what works for you and then go with it. What I present in the videos is plain vanilla, right down the center technique. It works for most, but not for everyone, and there are quite a few different schools of playing. If you watch videos of great players, you'll see quite a bit of variation in the particulars of the bow hold. I'll add thumb position vibrato to my list of videos to make. That's a good suggestion, and a lot of people have trouble with it. I haven't had sciatica trouble. I tend to get it in my middle back. There are so many variations on the pain that people get while playing that it's hard to help without really seeing someone play up close. Even with that, it can take a lot of experimenting to find the source of it and come up with some kind of technique fix or variant that will help it.

    MasterChiefR75 It's hard to know from your description without seeing what you're actually doing. The rule of thumb is that the more relaxed you can be the better, so I'm always looking out for things that cause tension or ways to reduce tension. One of the things that can be really important is rotating the bass slightly depending on which string you're playing. The best way it has ever been explained to me is that you want to keep the string you're playing aligned with the center of your body. So, for playing the G string, the angle between the bass and your body would be the most acute and the angle would become more obtuse as you cross to the lower strings. This lets your bow arm keep basically the same attitude regardless of the string you're playing on. Don't know if a text description of this makes much sense.

    The description made a lot of sense, though I dont know how helpful it will end up being to me as my bass is an electric bass on a stand and is a bit tough to rotate.

  • @sethgamba2840

    @sethgamba2840

    MasterChiefR75 The solution might be more in rotating yourself then. I have an NS electric upright that I use for certain situations, and I like the end-pin adapter for it rather than the stand. It gives you a much greater ability to move which I find really important for playing with musicality. The stand really makes me feel locked into place. This aside, I've never met one of these instruments that sounds even half decent with a bow.

    Thank you for your help! After doing some research, it looks like the endpin that came with my bass is actually missing and all that is there is the large, flat rubber tip! Now I know that I need to take it to a specialist and get an actual endpin for it. Now I wonder what else it needs done to it...

    how much should be the wight of a bow? someone tells me that my bow is too heavy..that's the reason why is so hard to have it every time perpendicular to the strings :/
