Shady government black-project corporation experiments with teleportation Some shit goes wrong, portals are opened, hellspawn/aliens swarm over the facility One guy has to fight his way through, find the portal, go through it to their home dimension, and shut them down Replace the Icon of Sin with the Nihilanth, and that's a wrap!

My point being, they're completely different feeling games. Doom is a fast paced game, with monster-closets, jump scares, and blasting your way through hordes. Half-life is slower, more thoughtful, but full of monster closets and jumpscares, still, with fewer high-action scenes. I guess the action ramps up when the military get involved, but it's more like a series of puzzle-fight set-pieces.

This is wrong. The story begins with commander keen. Commander Keen was id Software's first big hit in the early '90s, and it stars an 8-year-old boy called Billy Blazkowicz who fights cartoony aliens and vegetable people with his pogo stick. It's a pretty Nintendo-esque game, which is explained by the fact that it started as a project to bring Super Mario games to PC. A couple of years later, the same company released Wolfenstein 3D, a violent first-person shooter about an Allied soldier shooting his way through a castle full of Nazi atrocities. The name of the protagonist? William Blazkowicz, Billy's grandfather. There's more: id Software's next hit was Doom, an even more violent shooter about a futuristic soldier fighting space demons (or something magic: nobody's quite sure). And Doom II does not start with the Marine leaving Mars. Mars wasn't even in the original Doom. It took place on Phobos and Deimos (Mars' moons), and Doomguy got to Earth through a portal opened by the demons in Hell (after killing the spider mastermind).

There's also plutonia, tnt evilition, final Doom's two parts, and doom 64 which all fit neatly in one timeline. Here's a quick sum up of the known timeline between doom 2 and doom 2016 based on the info from doom eternal and 2016. Basically the same shit keeps happening on Earth and on Io (a moon if Jupiter) and doom guy has to keep killing demons. The moons of Mars are bombarded with radiation to kill any remaining demon life on them. Unfortunately the Mother Demon uses this to revive demons even stronger than before (hence their different appearance). Doom guy goes there to defeat her in doom 64. After defeating the mother demon, doom guy chooses to stay in hell to kill the mother demons sister and prevent hell from ever invading again. In the new episode of doom 64, the doom guy kills the mother demons sister and is transported away from hell... Somehow... It's not really specified by who or why. Based on the text it's unlikely the doom guy did it himself. [Start speculation] After doom 64, the doom guy is transported away from hell through space and time (probably by the demons as he's wrecking their shit in hell) and ends up on the sentinal homeworld Ardent D'Nur babbling like a moron about ripping and tearing [End speculation] This human is makes his way through the ranks from the gladiator pit to the sentinal army. After translating his language, he warns them about hell. The god of their sentinel world, the Khan Mayker (an alien hivemind that has dominion in thousands if not more worlds), has the doom guy instruct the army on how to fight hell since he has experience and King Dorvik (king of the sentinel home world) lets him prove himself and become a knight sentinal, making him a suit of armor for him called the praetor suit. As the Khan Mayker investigates hell, she discovers a prophecy saying that the one to destroy the Maykers would be from within the sentinel world. She creates the "Divinity machine" as a means to test the purity of ones soul so she can prevent this from happening. Before she can use the machine, the Khan Mayker sends one of her sentinel priests to investigate hell and they launch an invasion to fight off hell. They're winning for a minute when that same priest (now corrupted by hell) convinces one of the knight sentinals to show him where the source of their power, the wraith enegy, in exchange for bringing his son back to life. This was a monkeys paw kinda thing because the demons bring his son back as a demon and the icon of sin is created. (Whether his son is the icon of sin isn't super well defined. It's likely but not 100%). the Khan Mayker (now corrupted by hell) sacrifices the sentinel race to hell to gain their demonic power and create harvesting plants in hell. This energy is sourced from those sent to hell and tortured. She uses this and combines it with the sentinels' wraith energy to form argent energy. While this is going on the sentinel city of Taras Nabad is being sieged by hell and the knight sentinals and King Dovik are the only remaining sentinels that are both willing to fight hell and haven't yet been corrupted. Hell unleases a Titan (likely not the icon of sin) upon the city and all who are left begin to flee. A character called the seraphim that you actually get a name for in doom eternal sees what's happening and secretly escorts doom guy to the Divinity Machine and puts him in it, this basically makes him into a vengeful God. (Why the machine does this is unknown... But you know... Scant lore in doom games) With this new godly power, the doom Slayer defeats this Titan and stabs his sword into it's heart. The doom guy keeps fighting, striking fear into the hearts of demons until the forces of hell realize they cannot defeat him. So they choose to instead trick him by collapsing a huge structure on top of him, then sealing him in a sarcophagus. Also sealing away his armor. Millennia later, humans discover alien artifacts on Mars that allow them to open portals to a new dimension. This eventually leads them to hell, where they find argent energy, led by Dr. Samuel Hayden and Dr. Olivia Pierce. Hayden develops a tiny bout of terminal cancer and has them use their new hell inspired technology to transfer his brain or consciousness (it's not really specified which) into a computer and robotic body. Olivia Pierce becomes corrupted by hell as she's still a human but Hayden doesn't as he's no longer human. Olivia Pierce allies with hell to open a permanent hell portal to allow hell to overtake the human world. Realizing that Olivia can't be reasoned with and is no longer interested in humanity's benefit, he desperately awakes the doom Slayer. (Enter doom 2016)

The originals really were more or less as simple as, "Hell invades Mars and a diehard space marine kills them all. Hell invades Earth and a pissed off space marine kills them all. Pissed off space marine decides to invade hell back, single handedly, and kills them all. The end."

So he gets sent to mars to do janitor work, but something goes wrong right before / as he gets there. So a marine squad was formed and you were left outside with a pistol to keep watch and guard. But of course everyone dies and Doomguy then goes and crushes the demons. Though Doom 64's story, though not created by ID (but ID did help with it / make sure it was somewhat true to doom) , should have been added. I mean dude kills all of the demons of hell again, then stays back in hell to make sure no demon rises again, that's badass.

You are absolutely right. The martian and soul cube plots were added during the misguided attempt at making doom 3 a narrative driven horror game. Really i think it should be excluded from canon.

Which is what DOOM 2016 says of Doomguy's backstory. Stayed in hell and just started carving a path of destruction. Demons seal him in sarcophagus, and wakes up at start of new game.

The protagonist from Doom I is the same as the protagonist in II and 3. In fact, Doom RPG confirms that the marine in RPG is the same as I, II, and even 3. Keep in mind that Carmack directed, produced, and programmed this game and it was published by JAMDAT and id together, making it pretty much super canon. If we are to follow the timeline using this information, then you play as the same marine through each iteration, up to presumably Doom 64 where you remain in Hell for eternity to combat the forces of evil. Where does that leave Doom 2016's protagonist? Oh, right, in Hell where all the tomes point to you being the same warrior who underwent the same events as in Dooms I and II. Doom 3 is a fickle beast, in that it's hinted at being the prequel to the series. I'm not exactly sure where it stands on the timeline, but since RPG confirms it's the same person then we have to incorporate it as such. Doom II RPG explicitly states that Stan Blazkowicz, one of the main playable characters, is a relative to B.J. Blazkowicz III, a character hinted at in the first Doom RPG. Some people think the Marine is B.J. Blazkowicz III, but it's only speculative as the reference comes from a log you find in game. The story resumes after Doom 64 in the new Doom 2016, where exposition reveals your untimely demise at the behest of Demon priests who trapped and locked you up in the sarcophagus, hoping you'd never kick their asses again...until now.

Due to the 'Doom Slayer' (Doom 4's character) being millenia old, Doomguy likely gave him the armor, later becoming the Praetor Suit). Doom 4 (Original Doomguy might be dead and the Doom Slayer continues his legacy. The Mars facility is seen as rebuilt.)

You do realise that DOOM is set in an alternate timeline where the other Doom games stories never happened, it's a complete reboot for the series.

I played a little bit of both Doom I and Doom II back in the day. Some of my friends had the game, not me. I had never any idea what the plot was. I just understood the guy is in some facility in the moon or somewhere and has to kill demons. I mean you don't really need a better plot than that, at least you didn't back then. Those were happier times, simpler times. This video was very educational though. Now I know what it was all about :).

+dstrick82 Actually I didn't mind the story, but the game was too horror-like and less kick-ass action. Even the spooky levels in the original Doom with more ambient music had lots of action, so I don't know what was with that.
