Dude, The Magic Roundabout was originally a French animation called Le Manège enchanté but when the BBC imported the show, the scripts weren't translated, so Eric Thompson (father of Emma Thompson BTW) thought "fuck it" and just made the scripts up while watching the animation. That's the main reason why it's so weird. Also Weinstein totally fucked up the movie, adapting the UK one and adding shitty jokes about celebrities. If you want to see a proper Magic Roundabout movie, watch Dougal and the Blue Cat. And PLEASE Don't generalize Europe as one country, there's a whole host of cultures completely different.

I have to admit that I have a real soft spot for the 2005 UK original. I was about 7 when I first saw it and I fell in love with it instantly. Since then I've watched the older stop motion shorts and Dougal and the Blue Cat and liked them all, some parts of the Blue Cat especially creeped out my younger self.

Agreed; granted, I'm not sure the film would've sold well regardless of whether or not Weinstein rewrote it (since _The Magic Roundabout_ and its source show, _Le Manège Enchanté_, were only really known in Britain and France), but at least leaving the script untouched would've certainly made for a more enjoyable film.

I distinctly remember that skeleton scene when I saw Doogal all those years ago. I wish that shit was made up. It literally just sounds like the actors are talking to one another while the mic was left on.

After doing a bit of research, it turns out that the British version of the original show isn't even the original, but rather an abriged version of a french show with totally new scripts (the Samurai Pizza Cats treatment). So that makes the American version even farther from the original.

English person here, when I was younger (say about 9 or ten) The magic roundabout was one of my favourite movies. Upon finding out that this existed last year, I was actually offended. The fact that the executives had that little faith is the american public irritates me to no end. Even if the magic roundabout wasn't great, it didn't have references to *HALO* of all things.

In the movie's defense it *is* very pretty. Like for 2005, the textures are very smooth and the color palette is so pleasant to look at. I get that the visual presentation can't save a bad movie, but I do think it's a redeeming factor.

i was just in the shower fiddling my tits and clubbing my clit and i thought the exact. same. thing.

I received this on DVD from my grandparents when I was 7. Not knowing anything about it, and y'know, being 7 years old, I was like "Cool, thanks!" and I watched it. I was HORRIFIED. This movie felt like a fucking fever dream! And I would always ask my friends if they had seen or heard of this movie, and, of course, no one ever had (because this movie is garbage). Even as a 7 year old I knew this movie was terrible! To call the pacing glacial is generous and the plot is convoluted and weird as hell. I remember being annoyed endlessly by the stupidity of the characters and overall just wanting this movie to end. Fun Fact: I still have my original copy of Doogal on DVD, mostly just to convince myself what I saw was in fact, a real film and not just a nightmare I repressed from childhood.

I think there's one good thing about the American cut, and it's that Doogal has a cute voice to match his adorable puppy appearance. I really have no interest in the show or the movie, but I want a plush of Doogal so bad. He's just so cute and fluffy!

@Duck The 30 years of development was the legitimate version of the film. When it fell into the hands of other studios they edited the film and dubbed a lot of voices.

Well, Disney tried to make a director’s cut of The Theif & the Cobbler to make it the way Richard Williams intended it to be. But, it didn’t happen, fortunately, there’s a fan edit called The Recobbled Cut

Marty Araragi I love snek girl, I'd Senran her Kagura~ But yeah, ikr? He said he bought it before JoJo was cool (i.e 2008). He also had it in a previous video, forget which one. I've been a fan of his stuff since the beginning though, sent him stuff before.

pretty much. I wish it had more depth. It really felt like they had something going there

I dunno why but the way Pan rants while Ave Maria plays in the background at 20:55 is just such a beautiful combination.

I actually remember something about the original show- and it’s hilarious. The english version of the show, due to none of the people working on it having any idea how to translate french (I think it was french) and not caring, didn’t know what any of the episodes were about and just made up stories that wouldn’t make any sense that also had felt like they were making it up as they went (which they were) so it was nonsenical dialog from characters that were just doing random shit. So that explains stoners enjoying the show, as it was batshit crazy.

i remember when i was a child, before my sister was even born, my parents rented doogol from a redbox and i watched it. i cried at like a train dying or something.

Isabella Faus Doogal tried hard to rub the mixture off on some leaves, but it was no good.

22:48 Kiss Cartoon has a non-shitty version of The Magic Roundabout. The real kicker is that their version of Doogal is at a lower resolution than their version of The Magic Roundabout.

Fact: the original British version of the film was concieved and directed by the Bolexbrothers, a studio in Bristol known for their disturbing stop-motion films, particularly their only other feature, The Secret Adventures of Tom Thumb. A film in which Tom is a half-fetus, born from a test tube, who gets captured by a genetics lab and narrowly escapes mutilation, before witnessing his alcoholic father being brutally murdered in an alley outside a pub. Great movie. Also, the British dub for "Roundabout" contains several blatant drug references in its dialogue, a nod to the TV series' popularity with stoners and the many theories that have spawned throughout the years over the show's "inspiration".

No better way to celebrate this film's 15th anniversary than watching this video.

So, America took a movie that is the equivalent of Sesame Street, redubbed it in English even though it was already in English and somehow dumbed it down? Christ, executives in America must think children are dumber than bricks. I'm surprised the Yanks didn't add idiotic dialogue to the Shaun the Sheep movie. Like goddamned. What is America's obsession with dumbing down and/or redubbing European entities for kids? Are they afraid kids are too unsophisticated for a freaking English show? Also Judi Dench sounds super bored and like she disapproves of the script she's given. Not that I blame her.

I love how the skeleton just makes a god awful one-note reference, only for the other the save it with some ironically funny dialogue. These voice actors are on another plane of existence and I don’t know if that’s good or bad anymore. No wonder this franchise is associated with drugs lol

I watched this as a kid (I'm one of the lucky few who actually saw it in theaters), and I was so confused by the "hey, I thought we said no Disney?" line. As a child I didn't understand ad-libbing and was so confused as to what it meant and why it was there. Rewatching it moths later when it hit DVD didn't help.

i remember watching this vid not understanding all the Weinstein jokes, times have changed...

Because people are too sensitive and need the most inane and harmless shit changed like *_preestablished character names known the world over_*, while miscasting voice actors to the point of films being nigh but unwatchable. If you wanna have a good example of that, look up the original British dub of Astérix & The Big Fight, and then the American dub of Astérix & The Big Fight. I tell you, you will _not_ be able to sit through the first five minutes of the film's American dub. I guarantee it. (Plus the British dub has *_BRIAN MOTHERFUCKING BLESSED_* in it! How can you even say no to Prince Vultan himself?! ...P.S., Gordon's Alive!)

Comparing both versions, I prefer the original British version over the butchered American version. The British version actually *feels* like a movie instead of a cheap cash grab with forced pop culture added in. And I agree with Hoodwinked. It may not be as good, but I still enjoy that they took a classic fairy tale and turned it into a crime scene investigation.

I remember this film. Well, not Doogal, but The Magic Roundabout. Best scene IMO is the railway chase scene. Also, this film is kinda dark. Killing kids via hypothermia? Check. Zeebad shooting Zebedee of the cliff? Check. Being chased by a fucking steam locomotive with a drill front? Check. Killing your former minion and ripping his "heart" out of his chest? Check. Also, Doogal is an asshole. I hated him. Should've been chained in a cage.

This brought back some repressed memories of the McDonald’s toys, I remember the soldier had a chest that would open, and a button on his back that would make the crystal inside glow red.

Up to this point, I had successfully repressed this corporate funded bile disguised as a "children's film" into the deep archives of my mind.

Doogal's owner is the grubhub commercial pregnant lady when she was a kid.

The funniest thing about the ice plot hole is that the red wizard has FIRE POWERS which means he could have melted the roundabout the whole time, especially when they called on him right at the start of the film and he's there with them at the roundabout! He only gets taken out in the middle of the film, after they LEAVE and he FOLLOWS them!
