For me anyway, This is the best cover of Leon Russell's A Song For You . hundreds of singers have covered it. Donny Hathaway also arranged the music for his voice, piano, the strings and other orchestra instruments . Donny studied music at Howard University and so did Roberta Flack. Hathaway is probably best known for his two hit duets with Roberta Flack, the uptempo "Where Is The Love" and slow but beautiful love song "The Closer I Get To You." . I can still remember where I was winter of 1979 when I picked up a New York Times in the college student union and read that Donny had committed suicide by jumping out a high rise window . I cried . He left us far too early . Donny is in a better place as they say . I wish he was still here, sigh...

I’m sorry !! My dad a few days after New Years last year and before his birthday. I was only 20 and I feel like my own world is shattered. I was more closer with my dad and he was a little more patient and understanding towards me than others. I just want him to be able to have him hug me again or come back home through the front door. It’s been over a year and some people have said I am kinda being “emotional” with the way I’m coping about it, but others have said that’s just them being ignorant and insulting because people handle grief differently!!

I don't know how many times I have prayed, in all futility, that someone ... ANYONE ... would have been there that day to grab Donnie, to urge him to come away from the window, to tell him how much he was loved by so many, to beg him to just give it one more day, to tell him about the huge hole he would leave in the Universe if he were to leave us before his time. Surely not then, not that way.

I can listen to this song all day.

What an amazing composition. The detail of every instrument. WOW. I never listened to it so closely. And his voice is soul stirring and silky. I think this is the best song I've ever heard.
