Ya know she is not talking about a cake, she is talking about losing "the one" and she will never have that "recipe" that they made together again, it's just not possible to recreate their chemistry. She's recalling, and lamenting, the place, the time, the feeling of the end.... . She will go on to rebuild her life and do her best to have a fulfilled life and forget him, but still, after all the loves she has had in her life, he will always be the one who remains in her heart. That's how I have understood it. I totally get it😌

Your explanation is exactly 100 percent correct. The lyrics are precise about the meaning and what it states about loss and finding a path forward.

I totally get it too. I also had the love of my life slip away and will always cherish the many Donna Summer songs we danced to. We would enter Dane competitions and win. We were well known in the clubs in Macon. Memorable time in my life.

Very well-written explanation of this lovely piece of music. I looked at it as a Metaphor, just like you did. Some people take everything in the Literal Context! Great job...and Greetings from N.Kentucky USA Y'All 🇺🇸 ❤

My late wife and I discoed to this song in 1978. After 20 minutes on the dance floor, I was soaked with perspiration. We had perfected our dance routine for several weeks before ever taking it to the club. I miss both my wife and Donna Summer; I'm sure they are singing and dancing in Heaven. There will never be another.

Amen brother. Heaven knows, maybe you didn't have your last dance with your wife after all. And maybe it won't be on the radio, but maybe you'll be dancing with your wife once again with Donna Summer herself singing live to both of you in Heaven. I'm pretty sure Donna is there. God, I love her so much.

This song reminds me of being 12 years old in LA skating at the Roller Rink on Friday Nights-my friends and I NEVER missed a night, it was so LA late 70’s. This song blasting-nobody caring about anything, us hanging out with 16-20 yo’s, everybody in LA was into it….. I am very fortunate to have lived through that special time-all kids care about today is their phones and views. So SAD.

Nobody could sing this song like Donna Summer. She was the voice of an angel given to us and then taken far too soon. RIP my angel, we miss you - very much. If there is life after death I will seek you out for a long visit and conversation and perhaps a song. Until then my angel, we will always love you.

My uncle Steve used to play this song on his brand new, state of the art Akai stereo with Wharfdale speakers. He's no longer with us but he lives on in our memories when we hear songs like this. RIP Stevo.

I saw her at the Summit in Houston in 1979, and her energy that night was unbelievable. She put in over two hours and closed with MacArthur Park Suite,.with the same energy with which she opened. At the end she held the notes longer than on this recording (go back to around 6:50 -7:00 to get an idea). It was unbelievable. Donna summer has definitely been underrated. Her voice was incredible. May she rest in peace.

I bet the dance floor was packed in the 70s when this song came on. I had every song of hers on 45s. My mother loved her and we would always buy every song when released. She was the greatest.

Both versions by Harris and Summer fill me with nostalgia and longing for times past and people left behind. Summer's version is the most poignant disco song I know. Tempus fugit!
