This is my 5th video in a series on Travis style Finger picking.
A detailed breakdown of the finger picking in Dylan's "Don't Think Twice". In this tutorial you'll learn the chords to the verse as well as the entire right hand fingerpicked arrangement. It ain't easy! Please watch my previous "Travis Picking Tutorials" before you jump into this one!
I've already done an easier version of this song for Lesson one in the series. Check it out if this is too hard, and follow along in progressing difficulty in my Travis Style Playlist!

Important notes: Is this video worth redoing like how I edit them now, with TAB on the screen? And here...I've detailed the chorus in a new video! kzread.info/dash/bejne/X2SKxZuYoM_RoLA.html and here's a TAB finally! MikesMusicMethod.com

Hi Mike! I'm starting to work on this one again, as it's one of my very favourite songs all times and styles considered. It would be really helpful for me to have one video with the tab on the screen and maybe - if it's not asking to much - the whole song in one vid? Do you think that can be done? Hope you and yours are good. Take care.

Man your tutorials are incredible for a terminally intermediate player like me! I’ve played a few different versions of this song over the years, mostly my own patterns (except the Ramblin’ Jack version). But I’ve never been fully satisfied and this kind of pattern doesn’t make sense looking at a tab. I loved your Townes Van Zandt lesson for Nothin’ as well. Anyways, thanks a million!

Of all the many lessons and tutorials on KZread and elsewhere, this is by far the best. It's clearly explained in easy to understand instructions. Added to which, Mike breaks the chords and finger-picking parts into sections to enable students to learn each section and isolate them until you can play them your best before playing (and singing) the whole song. 👏

You’re doing a pinky-jump to a G in the bass in the first playthrough, during the am-bit which is missing from the instruction and the playthrough at the end. Sounds pretty awesome! IF one day you do an updated version of this song, it’d be great to have in there, too. And thanks, Mike. You’re really an awesome teacher.

Amazing. I'd already learned this from various other YT tutorials, but your version is different and sounds a lot more like the record. Going to relearn now. Slooowwwly. Would you consider doing a tutorial on the Joan Baez version of 'Daddy, You've Been on my Mind'? EDIT just looked it up on Wikipedia and, interestingly, Bruce Langhorne, who also played on Don't Think Twice and is widely credited for its hypnotic guitar arrangement, also played on this, but electric guitar, with Baez on acoustic. So it really might be (my ear really isn't good enough to tell) that part of the equally hypnotic effect there is down it being two guitars. Still, I'd love to get some idea of what's going on in the fingerpicking department there.

Yeah, so there are probably 2 or 3 videos of the 170+ that I changed in hindsight. Early on this youtube journey I wasnt even creating tabs for the videos! haha, why not? I couldnt tell you! I certainly learned with experience. So when I went back and redid a couple of these I realized: hey, now that I've been at this a while and am really listening to the songs note for note: I can do this better! I wasn't playing them EXACT. So the tab is more accurate to the song. But both ways sound nice. Sorry for the confusion. This is one of these songs that is so awesome, that in hindsight, maybe it's worth redoing and making a very slow, and hyper accurate video. Or is this one good enough? You tell me. Thanks for the comment and feedback. -Mike

@@MikesMusicMethod I am on the F chord of the verse, which I have always been avoiding. But this week I have nailed measures 1-4, including the cool hammer on and alternating bass at the same time which is a miracle. This song is my white whale and thanks to you I’m getting it! What is your smaller bodied steel string you sometimes use?

Indeed! Sorry, did I say otherwise? I know it's probably more accurate to call this "piedmont" style. But I learned it as "travis" picking and have been calling it such for too long to change it. And you're right. Merle was an all index guy. How he has that fast reaction time, God only knows. But I think it's fair to say "Travis" picking no longer really refers only to Merle but has a life of its own and now generally means something like: alternating thumb on down beats with melody on top. would you agree?

@@MikesMusicMethod I suppose. More fingers should equal less credit. Travis was like a one legged world champion soccer player in my book. Walkin the strings with no arms would take the cake.

haha, it's a pain in the ass. Set a drum beat (metronomes suck) at a pace that you can play it, but maybe mess up once in a while. Keep it at that pace until you can wink at your girlfriend. And then bump the speed up 4bpm. Wink and play, bump it up another 4. Try that out. let me know how it goes.

@@MikesMusicMethod yes, thanks! The drum beat works well. Gradually getting there. Realized it just needed a lot more time! I think I got too comfortable having mastered it confidently up to that point and then was frustrated it wasn’t happening. Nearly at the winking at the girlfriend stage!
