This has largely been my experience with music. I use the default "I listen to everything" because it's easier than explaining what I like to people most of the time because there's such a stigma around lots of music. A guy went off on a tangent about how the artist Voltaire looked "really gay" because he saw a CD in my car, and basically surmised that the music must, of course, be bad. On the whole, all my conversations about music have basically been negative except for a tiny handful of instances.

My problem comes with people who are so opinionated and, as idubbz said "obnoxiously passionate" about the music they personally like. I actually love talking about music with people who are open minded about it because I've dabbled in most genres of music and I have certain artists that I'm fond of in each of them but I usually stick to a few genres, namely EDM and rock/oldschool rock/punk rock and what I call "atmospheric" instrumentals. The conversations/people I hate discussing with are the ones who are judgmental over your music taste. Like I'm sure everyone's experienced the conversation where you say you like X niche genre or style of music or something like that and the other person kinda changes the expression on their face giving you a "huhh? you like THAT stuff?" look and it just sours the whole conversation to the point where you just don't want to talk anymore. Here's one example: I mostly like EDM and rock (my musical mood for now) and when I've tried mentioning that there's some J-pop/J-rock I like people will give me that look of "why though?" and I've even had people ask in a really insulting tone "Why do you listen to Japanese music/music in another language if you don't speak that language? You can't understand what they're saying." And then I'd have to go into a long-winded explanation that I like the way the language sounds melodically in music and singing and that I don't feel the need to know what they're so long as I know the sentiment the song is overall about. TLDR: Obnoxiously opinionated people ruin music discussions when IMO they are actually a lot of fun to have with people who are open minded and don't judge you for your musical tastes.

ehhhhhhhh idk, that one kind of goes both ways to me. There's usually a divide in the fan base of people that like his stuff because it's pop and relevant and then people (for me usually all other guitarists I've spoken to) that only like Inner Speaker and the 2008-09 EP and singles because they're genuinely great tunes no matter what level of obscurity they fade to through time. If you tell me you like Tame Impala for the latter half of that paragraph, then that's like a totally different conversation about listening to music, but like this video, audiophile opinions and obsessions over sound usually tend to really annoy the fuck out of everyone that doesn't want to hear it, so I'll just go ahead stop now and say just listen to whatever makes u big haha on the inside 🙂 edit: file 😑

Well opeth is not really a pure death metal band, they are more like progressive death metal if you really have to name what they have done since the 90's. Now they do progressive rock so it's really hard to put them in a category of music. They basically do whatever they want and they are influenced by way too many genres. A pure death metal band would be morbid angel or death.

As an actual musician I've realised over the years how to tell if someone doesn't wanna talk about it and won't press after the fact, but I'm pretty uninteresting aside from music so it's an easy fall back, and only ever from a place of "im really interested in this thing and peoples reasoning for liking similar things". Sometimes it ends up being a networking thing depending on the setting but that's rare obviously. A lot of non-artists probably find themselves in a similar boat where they genuinely have nothing else going on in their life and feel like going to music festivals is a personality trait

finally a video explaining how i’ve felt. i’ve been in a few relationships where the peach pit and the strokes and fucking car seat headrest were my s/o’s only topic of conversation. i’d say “yeah i really like this specific gwen stefani song rn” and i’d immediately get shut down or just ignored cuz it’s a “tiktok” song or it’s just generally mainstream. i can never bond about music with anyone. it’s just me listening to songs that make my ear holes go mmm, i don’t care how obscure or depressing the band/song is. if the first thing someone wants to talk about is what songs or bands they’re listening to rn i just take it as a red flag and that they find pleasure in confusing others about bands they’ve never cared about. i remember changing my spotify to make it look like i actually enjoyed listening to radiohead because someone i liked could see my acc and they were just the worst tbh idk why i did that. no hate if you listen to any of those people btw i just really don’t care for their music at all and that’s okay, you probably don’t care for gwen stefani and that’s okay too.

Is there scientists telling us that things do in fact matter, that we matter at all? A scientific fact that anything that holds life holds value? Is it God who has decided it? Or do you get to decide what things have value and what things do not - as fact? NOT saying that they don't matter by the way. They matter to me, they have value to me. But it's not proven for anyone. How do we prove that anything has value? How would you react if I said "bacterial lives matter" and that "it is a fact", so "you have to treat bacteria in a way that I consider respectful"? To a nihilist we all matter as little as they think bacteria matters. I'd love to prove them wrong, but I can't.
