The cattle gate helped my older brother have a successful vaulting career. But, as mentioned in the video, you need to be an advanced vaulter with a good understanding of stride frequency to take advantage of it and not get hurt. Jake knows how to use it and that's why it helped him take off on and outside his top hand for the majority of his jumps, which in return allowed him to vault on a bigger pole and jump higher. The vault is all about timing. If you have a consistently good take off mark you are likely going to jump higher.

Hey so I'm a junior in high school and all of last year I would always be 2 feet under, I have been working with a cattle gate and now my step is always perfectly on and at worst 2-3 inches under. When I hit my take off it is much smoother I am able to get a much higher vault and bend. This year alone I moved from jumping 11'6" to 14'6". Thanks for all your videos they are always so much help! I am so much more consistent because of this.

It would have been a game changer to have the technology, equipment, and expert coaching back in 1977! My name is Rod Lambe, I set the Meadowdale High School record in Pole-Vaulting in 1977 at 14.8.25 feet. It was a discipline and sport that I loved. I have held this record to this very day 47 years and would love to coach a vaulter to beat it! I wish all you high school and college pole-vaulters to go for your dreams. You can do this with the right commitment, discipline, and being coachable. Let's go for your dreams!

I was with Bubba Sparks and he was telling me about how he gets some of his vaulters to not stride on the last. Think of hitting the take-off like pushing out of the blocks in a block start. Just that change of thought from getting the foot "down" to drive back and push the hips forward made a huge difference.

Nice! It works, and has worked for a very long time. Only... as you said... for an advanced vaulter who can control stride frequency and understands how to monitor stride length over the last 5 or 6 strides. In the right hands, the cattle gate can be very effective. In the wrong hands it is of no use. The vaulter has to be mentally and emotionally tough to make it work for them. If a vaulter is afraid of it... take it off and don't use it. If they believe in it, it can work wonders and recreate your transition to plant and take-off. It can be a game changer.

Yep. It's hard to get everything that you know about how to run the approach to create a well executed transition to plant and take off covered in 5 minutes. As a matter of fact, it would be impossible. But I, for one, really appreciate you sharing the information that we've learned over the course of so many years, and a life spent in the vault. Great job, Josh! Keep up the good work. Truth.

decent jump at the end of the video..but i would suggest that he doesnt push the pole at take off in front of him but to push the pole more upwards..that way hes chest can move forward even more and that way he can have more powerful swing that can lead to better position later in the vault...cheers :D

1ar3bab00n thanks for the feedback. That's something I would have loved to fix in my vault but found it very difficult due to such an outside takeoff and some shoulder injury factors that made a "chest out" position a bit of a pain...literally. My competitive career is over but there's still time to fix it if I find the time. Thanks for the comment!

Hi thank you again for answer. It looks like you're jumping about 2 feet above your hand grip ... this is a good start, but you have to increase it a minimum of 1.5 feet to start to feel the pole! Many athletes do not know IT reflects the level of your technique, in the past athletes on STIFF poles jump about hand grip 2.7 feet (80cm) more or less of course, different technique, but it was a stiff pole which does not give you energy back - my point is today the best pole vaulters are over 4+ feet. This is a "sweet pole vault sauce". you must know exactly how much you are over grip. Do not rush for a stiffer pole if you do not jump above minimum 3+...feet, if you feel that the pole is too soft I suggest to shorten run up by 2 steps and concentrate on techniques and controlling the jump and stay on the same hand grip if it's ok.. do not try to run faster than you can because it will not help...okay talk to you later...real jumping begins above 17+feet before that one has to learn how to put in the pole maximum amount of energy with minimal force, and pull it out the same way, just like jumping on a trampoline!!!! Ek=1/2mv2

It could be a couple of things. First, you may not be jumping up enough at take off. Second, it could be a pole issue. Third, I'd simply just have to see it. Send a video over at jrwinderpv@gmail.com and I will take a look.

Hi my PB is 17'55 '' (5.25m) I jumped it when I was 16 years old.. later I jumped a bit higher (5.38m) but it was not official. This is a looong story.:-). I am from Eastern Europe I did it almost 34 years ago ... :-) in those days we jumped on what was possible to jump in this part of the world, there were such DDR poles that had different colors from yellow to brown... color symbolized the hardness of the pole it was crazy .... if you jumped about 16 feet, you had 50/50 chance that you'll break the pole ... I do not even remember how many I broke a lot. I jumped 5.25m on the pacer pole..we had maybe... 4 Pacers in the entire club at this time..I jumped on 155 pacer 15'7" long, my hand grip was 14'7" ish my grip was a little lower- than I could say pole feels like 160ish you know what I am talking about... and I was almost 1 meter above the grip. Let me say something it was a very soft pole I would say too soft but the only one I had..! I felt this pole 100% so that's why I know soft pole can shoot you up like you never imagine if u do it the right way. Man I can talk about the pole forever...... well. we can always talk and change the perception.

Vault Pro that’s great. 5.25m is an awesome jump! I was just messing with you before. My PR is 5.30m(jumped indoor and outdoors), with some unofficial jumps higher. If it’s not NCAA, USATF, or IAAF sanctioned it is not official in my opinion. I jumped 5.12m at 17 years old then suffered from what was supposed to be a career ending injury which required reconstructive shoulder surgery. I came back 2 years later, jumped 5.30m a few times and that was that. Decided marrying my now wife and getting a job would give me the life I wanted. Continuing to chase 18’ just didn’t motivate me. Plus, my shoulder never really allowed me to jump the way I wanted to and ended up focusing on coaching. My older brother Jake jumped 5.55m and little brother Luke is still jumping. He’s at 5.60m right now.

Hello. M English is not good enough, but if I have understand your technique : don't tak of UNDER it's false. It's better to take off UNDER ( little or long distance) in ever case. The distance is fonction off your power( speed, detente and the strong th of your "ischiaux" ...). You can see all the greatest pole vaulters are under. I am coach of Pole valt. Are wise, even if it's a very good technique for you or your brother, for me each pole valter must have his own technique from the beginner to to end. For me it's no universal rule. En FRançais : Pour le piquet en general on doit (we must) etre plus ou moins en dessous selon le rapport de sa puissance(detente vitesse, épaules...) et celle de la perche.

The greatest vaulters in the world did not intentionally take off under. They didn’t want to be there. But, because they are the best vaulters in the world they were able to make it work. To each their own. Best of luck.

Hmm strange 1m..!!!!!?. .... I'm surprised that you do not feel anything wrong before (take-off)I always had this strange feeling when something was wrong...I just threw the pole away from myself and ran over the pit..well sorry about that....Jesus just feel this pain...:- Sorry for asking but I watched yours jumps recording and I paid attention to some details..!. They do not go to the full overhang after take-off , it means for us loosening up the shoulder. they block it... at the same time they pull hips up...expose the arm to injuries by clamping.this movement eliminates transfer energy to the pole, limiting bending and ability to grip higher and of course, using a harder pole. There is a training that helps a lot ...I do not know you are practicing on gymnastics rings guys?.."RINGS BACKWARD DISLOCATE".I GUARANTEE YOU... IF DO YOU NOT THE LOOSEN UP SHOULDERS IN THIS EXERCISE...Return to home without HANDS.!!!!!!This is the same principle in pole vault what I'm talking about..I'm curious what you think about it?

Vault Pro yeah we tend to grip up on big sticks. Getting upside down was second to taking off well, with a good plant, and pushing a big pole. And rings would dislocate my shoulder haha. I’m done vaulting, and actually done coaching at this point. Just hoping some people stumble on my videos and find them useful.
