Don't Sleep On This Amp - Marshall JCM 2000
Музыка
In today's video Paul Drew and James Ivey look at the cracking Marshall JCM 2000 DSL guitar amplifier. This 100 Watt beast is every bit as good as some of the more favored Marshall but you can pick them up for a steal.
The Studio Rats are core band members Paul Drew on guitar/production/mixing, drummer James Ivey and Dan Hawkins on bass. They collaborate with singers and musicians to produce radio-ready songs.

So many bands recorded their first albums with JCM 900s and I still love that tone. So raw yet driven.

Yeah the 900 is a cracking amp.
I just spent 4 days in the studio with 4 of these. It’s a damn fire breathing dragon anytime i moved the volume past 2.5 it sounded like it was at 10
This amp sounds absolutely incredible.
The Crunch mode + a dirty boost / OD pedal is just utterly massive tone! I use this method and the tone is just phenomenal. I used to use the red channel until I messed around with the crunch mode
@BrotherReed

Same as you. Crunch channel + OCD is my standard drive tone. Used to use the red but unfortunately it loses too much bass response. You can't get those chest-thumping palm mutes on the red channel.
The clean sound with a Stratocaster with single coils sounds incredible on mine ! Love it !
I've had mine since 2001 the crunch channel with overdrive in front is amazing 🔥🎸
A friend of mine had the jcm 2000 and matching slant 4x12 cab. He owned it from New and was his main rig with a few pedals up front. He loved the ds1 and ran the Marshall clean. His tone was also great 👍
My memory was accurate! Like you guys, ended up on the "Clean Channel" with Crunch button in on my JCM2000, TSL, 50 watt head/1/2 stack. Great amp that allowed me to control dirt and vol with the just the guiar vol knob. And very importantly- its natural tone cut thru in a midrange heavy band mix via EQ - not dB/volume! I miss it and am considering going back to the DSL401 1x12 combo for blues/rock project in Los Angeles clubs which now fully mic up entire band. Cheers!

I use a duo of DSL 401s as a 2 head full stack set up. They are brilliant amps and a real bargain. If you get an early one upgrade the bridge rectifier. Later on ones already have an uprated part. In either case attach a passive heatsink to the BR an consider upgrading the main power supply filter cap. I'm not plugging my channel but there is a fair bit of DSL 401 content on there 🙂
The tone in the first clip, that’s what we all want a Marshall to sound like. Have an 800 myself and wouldn’t hesitate to get the 2000 as a replacement. Great vid!

Used to have the tsl60 and that thing was mint, always liked these jcm2000 amps. Nicely done vid lads!
Brilliant - I have gigged mine since 2007 15 times a year. Blown up 3 times in that period but worth it. Such a great amp.
sounded awesome! great playing \m/
Had one years ago. Such a fun amp!
my friend has one in Austin, and doesn't have any neighbors close by. We open the windows on a nice cool night and let her rip.... and it's GLORIOUS!
2004 and before JCM 2K 100 watt had the conductive PCB and the dreaded "bias drift". They fixed the boards in 2005 and after. The 50 watt didn't really have the drift issue as it was heat related.
i picked up a JCM2000 50watt head for $600nz/£300 four years ago and was immediately impressed. managed to pick up 2x 100watt 2000 heads for £420 & £470 a year later. immediately loved the green channel. not that fussed on the heavily saturated red channel but if you dial it back like the green and OD the front end it sounds awesome.
There's one in a pawn shop near me for £425, but I just bought a Katana Artist Mk1 which thanks to your channel allows me to get kind of close without knocking the windows out.
I love this one.DSL is a classic since long time.
I’ve got one of these. Very under rated amp. Super versatile. Not everyone is a fan of diode clipping but it’ll do anything you need it to do in a live setting. I love it.
@Mazut0

JCM 2000 DSL doesn't have diode clipping, the TSL does. same as in JCM 900 the SLX doesn't have diode clipping
Love my 50 watt version. And this is one of the best demos of the JCM 2000 I've heard. Some make it sound like a fizzy mess which is what I never hear with mine. Your demo sounds like what it sounds in the room. Kudos!

DSL is my favorite Marshall. I have been running a DSL 50W live for 20 years. Have some slight mods (most notably Mercury Magnetics transformer). It kills

@@TheThinker43 Amen - I run it on green channel / crunch side with volume and gain both around 7 and dial back the volume with a Weber attenuator - roll volume knob back on guitar to 7 and use volume and pickup switching to clean it up. It's brighter/crispier than a plexi, but sounds fantastic live. Hit a tube screamer (Keeley modded TS9DX or Keeley Red Dirt) for leads.

I got one of these at Guitar Center several months back and not a bad little amp. One day I do want to get a real JCM 800 either a vintage one or a reissue next year. Cool video! \m/
Top job guys, great amp
Had mine for 20 years, either lead 1 or lead 2 is good i think for my stuff which is mainly rhythm and riffs for hard rock. Combines well with my 5150ii to blend the american/British tones together.
I have a tsl60 from 1999 that I got used a few months back and I just love it I play black metal and death metal for reference
Great video, love the sound your Amp is putting out. The OD1 is great but the Crunch, can hear that all day. Incredible deal you got too. Looked online across Canada the lowest price was $895 for 50W. The 100W ones on average around $1600 . Cheers from Canada

Man, the Marshalls really sound great!
15 years ago I had an Orange Rockerverb, Bogner Shiva and a Plexi that I would rotate through gigs. One day I saw one of these JCM 2000's on sale used in Philly for $350 so I purchased it and began replacing my Bogner on gigs with this. I was surprised how good it sounded. One night a fight broke out in the crowd and the 2000 ended up with beer all over it. Thats when I realized lugging a $2500 Bogner around to club gigs didn't make sense when the $350 Marshall sounded so good. The 2000 has been my main head since. Takes pedals really well (unlike my Rockerverb). I don't play out much anymore but I record my own music for my YT channel. All sound tracks with heavy guitar is the 2000 into a 2x12 Eminance legend/Celestian Greenback.
i just got a 2006 jcm2000 100 watter like this one and it's true! all about the green channel classic overdrive. the clean is actually quite lovely. red channel usable but the green is glorious!
I have a dsl 401 waiting for repair at the shop right now. Looking forward to having it back
Great demo. I have 50w version. It's great amp, I love it.
Love mine. Can't ever see me selling it. Run though a 1960 4x12 with celestial greenbacks, it's untouchable
I had a 100 watt DSL100. Incredible clean channel.
These are great amps. I currently have the 50 watt version. I have previously had 2 of these and stupidly sold them and I Keep wondering whether to send it on. I also have a JCM 800 2210 (please if you can one day, demo this) and an EVH 5150 3 6L6. Let me just say, these are good amps. They take pedals so well. Yes some of the earlier amps have the bias drift and board issues. The one I have had a new board. Don't turn your noses up at these they are great amps. Juat keep the treble and presence at sensible levels and crank the mids. Don't use the deep switch or tone shift. There is only one drawback- the shared eq. What works for one channel doesn't work for the other. Otherwise, rock on chaps!
I have the 50watt and it is the best amp I’ve ever owned. Lead 1 with a boost is the sweet spot
I've got the MKII version of this and my 7string loves the little tone shift button🤘
I got a early 2000s DSL50 and into a 4x12 it absolutely slays. Stick a Boss SD-1 in front level max drive almost zero 👌🏼
I got a used JCM 2000 50w for my first tube amp when I was in high school. Got it with a matching 1960B cab for $1000 in total. I played mostly thrash and hardcore and it sounded great. Turning up the master volume made the fizz go away. I only got rid of it because I traded it towards a 5150 and an old 2203. Considering how much old 5150s and 2203s are going for these days, JCM 2000s are great cheaper alternatives if you can find one in decent shape.
Had this amp for many yrs! Unfortunately I don’t use it live; due to band members complaining about volume lol! I personally like my 800 more, but nothing wrong with the 2000 at all! Now the 900 is across between the two for my ears! Suggestion, need to dial your verb back! Just my setting lol!
I've had a 2004 DS L100 for about 15 years I bought it off a friend for 600 never had a problem. I love the amp so much I just bought a second one with a merc trans upgrade off of craigs list 3 days ago for 600 US. Incredible amps.

@@jroc6166 Some say there are issues with the soldering on the boards. I've never had a problem. But then again I hook up my speakers the proper way so I don't overheat the amp. I believe most of the problems people had with these was due to not hooking up the cab to the right Jack.
I gotta say this jcm is pretty nasty 🤘🤘 I will always be a fan of an 800 or 900 and will own them both one os these days. But I'm definitely gonna be on the lookout for a 2000, the tone out of it is awesome
I have a DSL 401 Combo that I think is way underrated. I leave it in the crunch channel with the gain on about 3. If I want more gain I slam it with an EP boost. The stock speaker is not the best, but thats easily changed. In the US (last time I looked) they're worth about $400.

I have 2. One is stock (being refurbished) and one monstrously upgraded/ modded. They are both great amps. Of course the second is better...especially compared to a lot of more boutique amps in my opinion.
I have a JCM 2000 TSL 60 and it’s incredible
Hey, really enjoyed the spatial design of this video, please share your secrets, that's like a proper recording setup, isn't it?
Che bel suono!😮🙌
Took my 2000 (15 year old) into a tech.. kept on going through ht fuses, and sometimes main fuse *poof with burning smell* Tech ended up changing the capacitors (fried) on the board as they are "under powered" for the load going through... Tech " yea I repaired a few now as this is a common problem with these amps" If you have a fuse problem try looking there.
Rock it as always!
Glad I got mine when the prices were low , 2 years ago at a pawn shop for $300 !! But now I have noticed the prices on them are going up, I think people are finally realizing these are really good amps! Funny thing about Marshall amp's? When the jcm 800 came out alot of people didn't like them, they worshipped plexi's, then the jcm 900 came out and all of the sudden the 800 was good?? LOL IMHO pretty much all Marshall tube amps can have a good sound if you spend the time to dial in the right settings!?
The clean is quite good on these, in my opinion. You kind of have to look at these as a one channel amp, because channel switching is difficult since the EQ is shared....but this is THE best sounding head I've ever owned, and I've owned a lot of great amps.

I borrowed one of these for a few gigs from a friend and i was blown away by how good it was. I had a jcm 900 dual reverb, jcm 2000 tsl 100 head, and a TSL 602 combo, and a JVM 210H and the DSL just had a thing that they did not... JVM was a close 2nd, but the DSL green channel with gain up just had a thing, a thump???

I have a jcm900 4100. So this head beats that ?
Love mine, so versatile. Use the Classic Gain when playing along with AC/DC, it gets you 75% of the way there in terms of the old Plexi tones. I view that Tone Shift button as an interesting gimmick, it further scoops the already-scooped tone I get from my Metal Zone when playing the death metal stuff and makes it sound a little more wicked. However, having said that, I would NEVER record with that on. Made that mistake on one song 13 years ago and have been regretting it since
Have two Brit DSL's and love them in stereo Rockman X-100 Lead One 💥
What version is yours? This head went through so so many versions.. over 20. Lots of issues. The multiple board connections are insane. If you’re lucky and got a decent one, they do sound great.
What bridge pick up is in that Tele? I have a 2000 DSL 100 and a 900 50w Dual Reverb High Gain
thank you guys..... i have a 2558 silver jubilee, TSL 60 watt, and a 40 watt DSL with 1 12 inch speaker .... the 40 watt gets to go to all my gigs because the other amps are too loud and they weigh a ton .... i slave a fender super champ with the marshall to get great clean tones but the marshall has a killer clean sound on it's own....
looking right now in the states and its 600 to get a used without even trying. Thanks for the heads up and the video. always a joy, Cheers
Super underrated amp.
i've got the 2x12 version....great....but it is popular that they have temperature problems and cooking the pcb board sometimes so bias work is a must....
This amp on the dirty with a boost 👌
Cheers lads, only found your channel today! I have one of these but can't even get the volume to 1 without shaking the rafters... so it's pretty much unusable for home playing. Totally agree with the tone shift knob. I only use the crunch channel, but at below 1 it sounds so thin, so it's pretty much just for decoration. Any tips for playing at low volume?
I'd have absolutely no problem buying one of these....I've got one !!
What pedals are you using for this vid? because it sounds great.
@The Studio Rats You didn’t mention which speakers you were using. Thanks
By the way what is that gold thinline tele ???? pups ???? look and sounds great !!!!
Gary Moore used the DSL for years and sounded glorious!
Anyone considering one of these should look into the 'Bias Drift' issue on the earlier versions. If you're in the UK, a replacement board (relatively easy to swap in and out, as it uses plug connectors) of the latest, and stable, board layout can be ordered directly from Marshall without breaking the bank (compared to paying a tech for chasing the issue for hours and eventually suggesting a new board anyway). Great amps, especially when maxing the gain on the Green / Crunch mode and boosting with a light overdrive, Classic Rock overdrive, JMP style.
@grinder2401

Exactly! Be very cautious about that bias drift problem when buying a JCM 2000 DSL. The JCM 2000 TSL suffers also from the very same problem (if memory serves right which I believe it does in this case :p) The Marshall forum and google have plenty of information.

I have an original one from 1998, and the earlier ones are awesome, in my opinion a bit better than the later ones with the black piping, but you absolutely have to address the bias drift issue. Any decent amp tech can get you sorted at this point, there are plenty of fixes for this issue. The problem is, you're gonna pay about $400 to have a tech do the repair.

I’ve got 3 of these heads under my bed and 2 jcm800s Finally 1 jcm900 custom tiger skin combo on its back For real no box board! So I am literally sleeping on this amp!
Currently in business of buying this beast🤘
Which speaker did you use for recording?
I think the thing that keeps these amps from being legends on the forums where group think is formed is that the 50 and 100 tend to be a bit fizzy at bedroom volumes. Crank them and they are the dream. A good many pros use them: Robin Trower, Jeff Beck, Paul Gilbert use them as did the late Gary Moore
It’s a standard rental amp and just works well for most types of music. Jack of all amps.
I have owned the jcm 2000 d 5:34 sl 100 watt since they came out and I agree that the lead 1 channel is awesome sounding. I never push in the pad for lead 2 cuz it's too muddy, but lead 1 with the bass pad pushed in and back the gain to around level 6 gives me a clean gain punch, then with my tube screamer I'm good to go. I have tried the TSL and could not achieve that same sweet tone i get from my DSL. Alao my opinion is that the first 100 watters had a bias problem to where is be melting tubes,,, but the tone was different after they corrected the problem.
Awesome!! I just went and bought one! lol Can I ask you what was you signal path to record this? OX? Two notes? Love to know how you got this into your PC sounding this good. Did you use pedals? Thanks for sharing :)

Nuno has been touring with these for years.
Correct, this amp was competing with the dual and triple rectifiers, but at a third of the price. I currently own the TSL, but did own the DSL beforehand and the clean on that amp cant be beaten, especially if you know what to do with it through a PA in an arena. As for the mid scoop, like any Marshall, it is designed for HIGH VOLUME, and thats where it is capable of contending with the rectifiers, but it can still produce the classic crunch scream. Great review, just didnt do it justice because of genre bias. And thats the truth
I used to have one of these back in the day. Should have held on to it really. The problem wasn’t so much the tone shift button because you can just ignore that. The biggest problem was the deep switch which was too much when engaged but too little when off. Such a shame as if they had a proper resonance control these amps would be selling for double what they are now
What Fender is that?! Stunning 😮

JVM 410 sounds great too!
I heard that the DSL range, both the UK and Vietnam variants, sounds quite a bit scooped with all EQ knobs in the noon position when compared to a JCM800 with the same settings at noon. The fact that you had the mids on 10 on this one seems to confirm that reputation, or am I wrong?
