Don't Raise A House Wall Like This!

We're adding the walls to the house build. The first wall is constructed and raised... in a dangerous way.
Then two more walls are built and put in place. We're getting there with this self-built home.

Hi Karen, although Hayden might have given you a few scary moments in raising those walls he did a masterful job. He'd thought of all things and took his time to be safe. I think he'd done the same process before,he's definitely a "Master " of the construction business. Thanks for the msg re Patreon.I was a subscriber before and don't know why it got lost. As its spring in NZ now I can see the house will be move in ready by the end of Summer, I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. Reese has really grown into a really great little toddler who is no doubt into everything ss he explores the wider world. Good luck with the build and everything else Lots of love from me and Canada X

He did do a similar process for the door and window of the cabin. That 1st house wall just seemed too big to do! I was sure you’d been a patron but couldn’t find you in the back end of Patreon - a mystery with what happened! Glad you’ve joined again. A big thank you. Hayden will pause with the house build over summer for his event season, so we’re guessing the house might be liveable sometime next winter. I need to be patient 😆

Nicely thought out and worked through method of raising the wall. A small change to consider for the next ones, start with 2 long diagonal braces nailed up near the top, then you don't need to worry about them falling down each time a section is moved. He's doing a great job and actually managing the risk pretty well.

As kids and into adulthood, a lot of praise comes with doing things completely on our own, which can make us think it’s not only the best way, but the only way. Regardless of gender. Learning the true strength in vulnerability and community takes time and tenderness. Expressing your feelings is important, and maybe there’s a solution, like having your brother help for weighty projects. Hugs to you. Nothing but love to you both ❤️☕️

my dad was a shipwright/boatbuilder/housebuilder/swimming pool builder. Like Hayden he developed engineering skills to enable him to get things done..its what happens I guess when you build alone a lot. Not to say accidents don't happen and I think they happened more as he got older. After he slit his throat open with an angle grinder he always had someone on site when he was doing 'complicated' manoeuvres…luckily my brother was there to save him that time! its in the genes that no8 wire mentality. Im guilty of it around the house/my caravan/car too! All you can do is ask him to have someone there even when he doesn't 'need' their help :)

Karen, there is a guy on KZread called 'The Crazy Framer'. He's a Canadian guy that build houses single handed. He uses a neat ratchet device and a 3x2 for erecting walls. Not balancing them on loose timber like Hayden! Take a look, he's pretty inspirational 🙂 It's also easier to put the ply/OSB skin on whilst the frame is on the floor. Also ensures the frame stays square too.

Despite how it looked (slightly sketchy), I'd say good on Hayden! It would have been actually sketchy if he tried to lift it like that sheathed. And to be fair, it would have taken probably 3 able people to lift that in one shot. If you want to see something truly scary, check out "The Crazy Framer" on KZread. He's a Canadian and hasn't uploaded in a while, but his work is phenomenal, inspiring, and terrifying lol.

That knowledge came in handy when I dug out a flat area for our car at our first house to move big rockes out of the ground and across to the "rock garden." I gave my poor neighbour the hebie gebies.
