Don't make this mistake!

Hey there. You may have noticed that we changed the name of the channel to The Ultralight Mindset. You'll still find tons of videos related to ultralight backpacking, hiking, and outdoor content, but also tips on living with less (ultralight) in your day to day life.
Thanks for watching!
Boots are certainly the go to for most people in snow and cold weather, but the lightweight comfort of a trail runner paired with a waterproof insulated sock is definitely something to consider. I used this system recently in deep snow while hiking and snowshoeing and I loved it! My feet stayed warm and just as dry, if not drier than they would in an insulated boot. Only a slight bit of moisture in my thin liner sock from sweat. I'm sure this system has its limits, but if your thruhiking or looking for an alternative to heavy boots this is definitely worth looking into.
Happy Hiking!

Heavy boots are not always the best option, especially for a thru - hike! Hiking and backpacking in winter and in snow can be challenging. This set of gear may help you ditch the boots and have a more comfortable hike.

I'll be posting more videos soon. Definitely continuing with backpacking content, but Im also going to be focusing a bit more on the environmental side of outdoor gear. Im working on a new MBM website. Taking that Ultralight mindset and applying it to all aspects both on AND off trail. Hope to run into you guys again soon! Take care...

Wow. Thanks for the kind words. Yes, I'll have new videos starting back soon. I'm also working on a new MBM website. Bryce did such a great job on the VTC video. Plus, I told him at the start that if he was making a video I'd just shoot a little B roll for him and not worry about capturing the hike. I really enjoyed hiking with Bryce. Hes a good dude. I've hiked the VTC several times. Anything in particular you'd like to know?

Just keep doing what you’re doing. I’ve actually got most of my set up based on a lot of your advice. The through hikers have a lot of good info. But they’re just in a different world from a lot of the working class weekend hikers. So it’s just good to hear from somebody that works hard every day and also enjoys the outdoors. Thanks and keep it up.

I live in alaska and discovered seal skinz early this winter while looking for neoprene socks to use with my trail runners. I really like them. Now I have another pair and also got a pair for my friend who’s about to hike the CDT. For short hikes I dont wear anything under them. I’ve hiked multiple times in 10 degree F for a couple hours with out getting cold feet while stomping through fresh snow. On over night trips I would wear an extra pair under them to help absorb sweat, that way I’m not having sweaty feet all night and in the morning.

Yes. Having the thin liner sock was great. Its definitely a plus to be able to seperate everything, turn it inside out and dry everything overnight. With a boot, once its wet from sweat or water its very hard to dry out.

I was pleasantly surprised how warm my feet were in mid rise Lone Peaks trail runners wearing wool socks with gaiters this winter. We generally walked previously broken trails, and if we were out in fresh/deep snow I'd wear pack boots. The only "problem" I ran into was my microspikes are a little too big on these shoes, and the shoes are not sufficiently rigid. The metal parts of the microspikes rode up and over the nose of the shoe and compressed it uncomfortably into my toe. I'm not sure what the solution is, but may try a size smaller on the microspikes to see if that helps.

I haven't made a video comparing trail runners to hiking boots. I prefer trail runners. Lighter by far, way more comfortable, much less potential for blisters, and they dry quickly.

Did you stay the night…or multiple nights with that set-up? The biggest detriment I see is that your entire footwear system would freeze unless you put it all in your sleeping bag as everything on the outside would freeze from exposure, and everything in the inside would freeze from sweat.

Put your shoes in a plastic bag that you can seal and put them next to you in your tent. Its usually a few degrees warmer than outside or under your vestibule. If it's going to be well below freezing put them in the footbox of your quilt or sleeping bag. You may want to do the same with gas canisters, water filters, batteries, phone, and hiking clothes. Putting on cold clothes is no bueno. Take care.
