Hey Guys, I just realized I left out the contents of my fanny pack. That's what happens when you don't fully unpack from your last trip. Wooops! I'm actually experimenting with shifting the contents of my fanny pack into an HMG shoulder pocket and my ditty bag. Going in the ditty bag: NiteCore NU25 Headlamp, Sharpie. Going in the HMG pocket: 10,000 mah Anker battery, short usb cord, S10e phone, sunglasses when necessary. Snacks will go in the Waymark pocket shown in the video. I didn't have the HMG pocket when I shot the video, but the weight of the pocket and all listed items are included in my baseweight. Have a great day!

I've been using a fanny pack for about 25 years for everything from fly fishing, to trail running, to international travel. Currently I'm trying out two new shoulder pockets for backpacking. Maybe they will take the place of my fanny pack, maybe they won't.

I've worked in dialysis close to 20 years using dialysis water purification now for use in backpacking, and the only reason Sawyers freeze in winter is campers don't back flush with AIR to remove the water from inside those tubule fibers. A dry fiber Sawyer doesn't freeze and crack. Of course in the morning you'll have to prime like you did first use, but most people wouldn't have a problem with that anyway. Dry flush should be a habit when using hollow tubule filteration no matter who makes it ... Grayl, MSR, Sawyer, BeeFree ... or any tubule product on the market for use in the field. The katadyn is the easiest. Empty the bag and then remove the screw cap to let the bag fill with ambient air, put it back on, and then remove the sip cap so there's less back pressure on the fibers through the sip opening, and GENTLY squeeze the inflated bag until no more water comes out the filter through the cap resin. Store it upside down with sip cap loosened to drain any residual water, but this shouldn't be absolutely necessary if you did it right the first time. Sawyer with LifeWater is basically the same except GENTLY squeeze the plastic bottle to remove fiber water. Faster squeeze with more grip power will not help the filter and on off chance might damage it. That's still unlikely. Grayl is more difficult due to the hard case bottle, but still do-able. Loosen cap from bottle but leave it on to release bottle vacuum, store upside down and passive drain water from the fibers. Pump style filters can be reverse pumped GENTLY to remove residual water. If you're fine with sleeping with your water, do that. But if in more severe cold weather even sleeping, or you don't want to sleep with water in a down bag, gravity drain or gently squeeze residual water so there's nothing to freeze and split fibers in the first place.

Thats a LOT of great information....👍 I push all the water out to dry fibers between trips. I just toss my Sawyer in a ziplock or bread bag and keep it in my bag in below freezing temps.

Two suggestions. Turn your shepherd hook stakes upside down so that the pointy ends face up. That’ll help you avoid getting holes in the bottom of your stake bag. Second-turn your fuel canister upside down-you won’t risk rust rings that way and the stove and lighter fit better in the concave bottom of your canister. I also wrap everything in my bandanna to keep it all from rattling around in my Toaks 750 rather than use two separate pieces. Love the videos.

Another option is to keep a small silicone mat {4"x2"} inside my toaks with my stove. no rattling and u have a food prep surface that weighs nothing.

Thanks for the video! I'm in the market for a 2P tent I can comfortably take solo as well. The duplex looks great, but I'm also considering some other options and was wondering about your thoughts: (1) DCF Two by gossamer is basically the duplex with silynylon floor, which makes it more packable (would be nice because my pack is small). (2) Tarptent double rainbow li has a single arch pole so it can be semi-freestanding and has tons of room. I guess my question is whether you like using the duplex and whether the big pack size and lack of freestanding ability has been an issue. Thanks!

I love the Duplex. I do wish it packs a bit smaller but it works just fine with my gear in a 30 liter pack. If I have to carry extra food or layers I can always strap it on top of my pack. The GG Two DCF does look interesting. I'd love to see one in person. I have seen the one. Pretty sweet. A bit tight at the foot end. I'm guessing the two also tapers at the feet. The Duplex is super light, I can sleep two comfortably, its crazy easy to pitch and put away, and you can leave the doors open in nice weather for a great breeze and a great view.

Hey, great video; watched the whole thing in one shot. Guess that makes me a gear nerd. Some very interesting, low-cost ideas here -- especially want to try the night socks/mittens diy project! Really appreciate the encouragement to carry out trash. I once carried out a thrown horseshoe! That was a bit much.

Thanks for the kind words. Much appreciated. Honestly, I have packs made of Xpack, Dyneema, Robic Nylon, and more. I like all of the fabrics. Each has its plus and minuses. I like the rigidity of Xpack. It helps the pack sit upright when I'm loading it full of gear. I think the difference in weight with dyneema would be minimal. There's a new material that just came out that looks like it could be better than Dyneema and Xpack. Its much stronger and it incorporates recycled polyester, and its made in the US. Keep an eye out for "Challenge Sail Cloth Ecopak". Take care

Thanks for the video. Can you comment on the specifications for your Nunatak 3D quilt (size, etc.). I just sold my Nunatak ARC UL25 as I made a sizing mistake and bought it too large and I also really didn’t like the pad attachment or tensioner system. I’ve been considering the 3D quilt for the same reasons you mentioned and your comments have convinced me to give it a try.

I think I will go with the 35F version to save weight and I have a Western Mountaineering Alpinlite for below freezing (20F comfort rated but I also have 3oz of overfill as well so it's a bit heavy) .

Scott, How did it feel to go from a zero drop shoe (Altras) to the 5mm drop on the Hoka's, especially after so many years with the Altras? Thanks for your usual good review of your stuff as always, I always pick up some helpful information. We saved our feet from frostbite on a cold cycling ride by slipping breadbags over our socks, held all the moisture but it was the heat that got contained that was critical, so a total winner!

Sorry for the late reply. I didnt have any issues going from a zero to 5mm drop. Ive been using Reebock Nanos (4mm drop) for all my Crossfit workouts for years, so I was already kind of going back and forth a little bit. I do love the Hoka Speedgoats. The new Speedgoat 5 comes out soon, and I will be buying a few pairs for sure! Bread Bags For Life!

Hello, is it the VX07 material on all sides of your backpack or did go you with a mix of VX07 and VX21? I did order mine in full VX07 - front/back/sides - but as the lead time allow me to think, I still have doubt with VX07 for the back (I am a bit afraid it could be a problem on long term wearing the pack on you bag all day long, I suspect the VX21 could be a bit stronger, my other concern is that it would not be as rigid as the X21 which can be a point when using frameless packs). Front and sides are not a issue with VX07. Just hoping that the lead time for these packs do not increase too much and I would still receive mine with the original 4 weeks (just noticed lead time is now 6 weeks :-()

My pack is all VX07, except for the bottom VX21. I cant vouch for the long term durability. I have only switched to Xpack in the last 8 months. As far as the lead time, I'm sure you'll get the pack within the time listed at the time of your order....👍

Great loadout. I've been working on mine big time in the past year. A lot of is the same as yours. I do have one worry and its my Uberlite. I haven't really been able to test it in cold weather but I will here soon. How cold have you had yours down to? I also have one of the gossamer gear thin pads that I will also be using and I'm a warm sleeper. I hope I can get down to about freezing with it.

I have slept in 26 degrees on the Uberlite with my Katabatic Alsek (22 degree rating). I was definitely chilly by early morning, but it worked. I'd say low thirties would be a safe bet for being comfortable on the Uberlite for the average person. Anything below freezing I'd switch to a warmer pad or supplement with a ccf pad. I've really enjoyed mine. Crazy light!

@@TheUltralightMindset I do have the Gossamer Gear 1/8 foam pad. I could double it up for my torso and add 1 R Value. That's my plan and hope to do this on the Colorado trail this summer.

Do you still use the Columbia Silver Ridge? Just wondering if you have any new suggestions for warm weather long sleeve that stays cool with a backpack on.

Nope. Ive been trying to get away from synthetics as much as possible in my gear. Ive been testing a lot of other merino, and alpaca long sleeves. 150 or lower weight merino works really well. Most companies use a blend of merino and nylon. Alpaca has been my goto lately, but I find it to be a bit warm in anything over 75 degrees while moving. Check out Icebreaker, woolx, or Woolly. Questions: 1. do you use the skirt instead of rain pants, or with them? 2. Does the rain drip off the skirt directly into your shoes or is it wide enough to miss them. Thanks! 😀

Nope. I wear the rain skirt OR I wear the rain pants. I never hike with both. I use the rain skirt in 3 season conditions (20 degrees +) I hike in lightweight trail runners that drain well so I don't usually worry about rain or stream crossings. I just walk through the rain or stream. If its cold enough for the rain pants, I will try to keep my shoes dry, but in rain they will get wet.

I’m curious if those shoes are zero drop. I never had an issue with Plantar Fasciitis until I wore zero drop shoes. When i stopped wearing them the PF went away. Weird, because Ive heard the opposite from some folks.

Nope. Those are Hoka Speedgoats. Minimal drop and max cushion. I have moved away from high cushion shoes and embraced a more minimalist barefoot style shoe. My feet are MUCH healthier, stronger, and pain free! I'll be making a video about my transition to barefoot style shoes in the near future.

I watch Bryce Newbold as well and saw your hike together.....are you telling me that I've been taking backpacking advice about the Sierras from a guy that lives on a sandbar in the middle of the ocean!? This is NOT what I didn't pay for. Shade for you is a bush....fish can walk the coast to coast trail going west. Wells are above water. Damnit. My packs down to about a pound and a half and now I know why.... its only because WE pack shorts sandals and beer. Signed San Diego Cheers brother

Synthetic I belive. Its just a cut piece of shammy. Actually I belive it was sold as a cooling towel at Walmart, but its the exact same material as a car shammy. I think you should read up on transitioning to a mid foot strike when running and eventually a fore foot stride with minimalist shoes with no cushioning or arch support. It have great potential in leaving that plantar fasciitis in your past. That thing is weak and need some proper strengthening. Perhaps try to find a physiotherapist who believes in the same thing and try that persons advise as a second opinion. Great video by the way! A lot of great advice and inspiration.

I use both, 20 liter and 35 liter packs. Depends on the hike and what I need to carry. Most of the time I like less volume, but in winter or hikes with family or friends I may need to carry some extra food, clothing, etc. All the packs have webbing loops for attaching hip belts. Happy Hiking

It's a nice hoodie, but at 12 oz the warmth to weight ratio is not good at all. Love the muli use of the legs you cut off and use on your arms and feet. Well thought out.

Always pick up new tips watching your video's.... No need to pack the Sawyer syringe... simply use the flip top from your Smart Water bottles!

UMMM.....Nike. Lol. I think they are called Nike Pro Combat. They may have changed the name. They are very lightweight so that I don't overheat while hiking or running. Let me see if I can dig up a link.....

HaHa! Yea, I do like those things quite a bit. Funny thing is, I have no idea where to find them. I bought them from a local K-Mart maybe 3 or 4 years ago. The K-Mart closed down shortly after that and I don't think they sell anything online. I do know they were K- Mart brand XL women's fleece leggings. I think they cost me $5. They must have a good bit of spandex, elastane, or something because they are super stretchy. Ill look around some more and see if I can find something similar.

Some potential weight savings: 1. Use the two bigger tent stakes as a trowel. 2. Dicth the cut-off bottle and use the toaks to scoop water with. 3. Ditch the blow up pillow and use a DIY pillowcase stuffed with your jacket. 4. Trim the sleeping pad below the hips. 5. Ditch the knife and get a Derma-Safe Folding Razor Knife. 6. Remove those plastic rings on your water bottles. 7. ADD a bottle cap, they are a bitch to lose.

1. I use my trowel as a multipurpose item and I like to make sure I dig a proper cathole. Worth the minimal weight. 2. The water bottle can bend and flatten out when collecting water from very shallow sources. The Toaks can't do that. 3. My jackets are part of my sleep system. I wear my puffy, when I have one, to boost the warmth of my sleep system meaning I don't need to carry a heavier quilt. I slide my rain jacket over my footbox for added warmth and protection from condensation. Plus, I like to get a good nights sleep. A 2.5 ounce pillow is absolutely worth the weight. 4. Definitely a way to save weight. I used an Xlite short for a couple years, then the Uberlite came out. Same weight, full length pad. I still use a torso length Zlite in summer. Love that thing. 5. I use the scissors and tweezers enough to stick with the knife. Not a bad idea though. 6.Great idea. I knew there was Something weighing me down! 7. I always carry an extra sport cap in my ditty bag. You must have missed it. All great ideas and very much appreciated! Thanks for sharing...👍
