Don't Live Each Day As If It Were Your Last | Leana Delle | TEDxMountainViewCollege

In this fast-paced world filled with high expectations and a wealth of distractions, is it really practical or realistic to “live each day as though it’s your last?” This talk will explore the age-old advice, challenge its wisdom and argue for a better alternative - one that may actually be more motivating.
Leanne Delle is an RN, speaker, podcast co-host and author of the Amazon Bestselling novel "Control Switch." She completed her studies in creative writing at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, where she is an alumna of their New York seminar. Originally from Canada, she became an American citizen in 2009 and is proud to write and stack her books permanently in The Big D.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

"If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I'm about to do today?" It's my last day. Whatever work I have to do won't bear fruition today, as it will take more than one day. I might as well be lazy and do nothing. "If today were the first day of my life, would I want to do what I'm about to do today?" Hmm, I was about to procrastinate on all my work and waste my time. Since this is my first day, and I have a lot of time ahead, I might as well take it chill and not do anything today. I can do it tomorrow.

Exactly!! It's hilarious how she invents a new way to think simply because she clearly didn't understand the original proposal. Nothing good ever bears immediate fruit, so either we confront our limited lives, and become happy with the effort itself. The latter, always leads to procrastination. I have unlimited time, no one died shortly after their first day!! I have time to putts around. Leading us towards unfulfilling lives.

Live everyday like it’s the first or last. Both have the same meaning. Each day is a gift so don’t take it for granted. Treasure and make each day the best it can possibly be. The past is already gone, the future unknown, so the most important is the present moment. It doesn’t mean you forget the past or not plan for the future, it means the journey may be more important than the destination.

One time I had a shroom trip and I ad the clearest realization and sensation as if my entire life I was living on auto pilot and following a narrow path created by the walls of social norms. I had felt as if I was just born and it's my first day on Earth. The very next day I started on projects that I had told myself I would get to one day and in 6 months I accomplished more than I thought I could do in years.

The expression only means "Enjoy each day and don't miss an opportunity to do something great." In other words "Don't be afraid to do something that you would finally do, if you only had a day left to live." Nobody actually lives that way 100%. Planning for short term as well as long term things is part of every persons daily life. The old saying is not meant to take so literally.

I know it may sound silly but the game Red Dead Redemption 2 is one of the most incredible games made in that it puts you in the boots of someone going through that very example of existential clarity. You play as a character who hates themself and and goes along with the morally ambiguous tasks they’ve lived their whole life doing. However, when you learn about that expiration date you get a character who sees the world clearly and realizes they can redeem themself and their actions

This is the only Ted Talk I’ve really connected with. It was very powerful and beautiful. I’ve been going through a lot of anxiety lately, I’m about to go through a huge change in my life (graduating college :) ) I’ve been freaking out the in the first couple days of my last semester. I was scared and angry that I might never seen my friends again, that the pandemic took away so much time from me, that Im just going to end up working some mundane job while I reminisce about the best years being behind me. But your speech showed me that I have a future, I have a life to live. I’ve had a lot of pain and problems due to my past but after hearing friends story I feel so inspired. If she can overcome the dark coulds so can I. Bless you Leana and thank you for the talk, I’m going to start living each day like it’s my first!

I think it's just playing with semantics. Living each day as if it were the last or as if it were the first is the same thing. The point of it is exactly the same. The point is to not think of the future nor the past but to be present in the now. If using these words instead of those help then by all means subscribe to whatever points. But it's the exact same wisdom that's encompassed in that "cliche" saying or the one you're trying to use instead. The goal is the same, the message is the same, it's just to stop having regrets about the past or freak out about the future and not take things for granted. The only reason why people use more living each day as if it were your last is because death is easier to use as an incentive to gain clarity as it's final and doesn't leave you with any other alternative. Thanks for the intent nonetheless and your desire to spread positivity. That's always a good thing

I have a little doubt in my mind . How do you live like it's your first day when there are a lot of things you have experienced in the past and you just cannot ignore them and feel happy about it?

If I lived every day as if it was my last, I'd be unemployed within a week, and right within a month.

Tried to live each day as if it was my last. Emergency services now want me to pay for calling them every day and telling them I will die today.

I prefer to live my life as if I was alive. Because, although being alive, of course, from 16 to 19 years old I was dead, i thought all the good things in my life had already past and there was nothing good waiting for me in the future. I thought I was old and it wasn't my time animore. But someday I started to wake up slowly, realizing I had all my life ahead, and that good things can happen to me again. I was young and live was full of opportunities. And little by little i started to resurrect. Now I'm scared of dead, which is a good sign, cause before I wasn't. And thinking that one day I am going to die paralises me. Actually if you ask me what would I do in my last day i wouldn't know what to say... I mean, does it even matter? It's gonna end in 24 hours. What gives me energy and makes me life my life to its fullest is knowing that I am alive. So i prefer to live my life as if I was alive, cause you can be dead inside when your body is still alive, and it's not cute.
