This video was helpful on a different level. I'm coming up on the fourth year since I've had my stroke. I'm a pretty positive person even throughout this whole process. There are times well I've felt hopeless and times I've felt like I can do it! One of the things that were messing with my head was watching stroke survivors that have made these quick turnabouts and gotten back to life so quickly and a friend of mine had a stroke and her life is awesome. I celebrate these people and encourage others. But I'd be lying if I said as the years started going by I didn't start wondering what am I doing wrong? Why aren't I this far yet? And in those moments I'd see an immediate decline in morale. But you put it out there first. There are many factors in recovery. Support, financial situation, resources, how severe and where your stroke was. I absorbed that and the journaling would be an awesome idea. Like a boost for strength and my will to go on and stay optimistic🙂🙏🏿✌🏾

@dontagotti, Thank you so much for sharing your experiences. I hope others reading these comments will feel less alone in their comparison experiences. We're human and comparison is a very natural process. It just gets in the way if it limits progress or causes you to beat yourself up! ❤️ Glad you liked the journaling idea!

Thank you for another fantastic video, Elyse! I am a 21-year-old stroke survivor and the second type of comparison ("survivor's guilt") plays out in my head every time I achieve something. Your patients are so lucky to have a knowledgeable and experienced OT like yourself! Your videos either perfectly describe my situation, or help fix a problem I didn't even know I had.

@@PostStrokeOrg I think one thing I need help on is how to reduce biceps/brachialis tone. This is mainly about arm swing when walking, but my elbow tends to bend when I’m getting out of cars and I get bicep activation when I’m reaching for things on shelves. I’ve seen a couple other videos advocating for bicep stretches against a doorway but was curious if you have a recommended approach to keeping the arm straight and relaxed during walking/movements.

It’s coming up 3 years since my stroke and while I have not kept a log of wins I see and experience the things i do on a daily basis that would’ve been so difficult to do at the start of my recovery. I learned it was important to manage expectations (I thought i’d be back to normal a month after throwing myself hard at the in patient OT and PT) My body and brain disabused me of that notion so I prepared and settled in for the long haul. I’ve accepted that there’s no going back to normal but I can achieve a new normal.

I'm so sorry that you feel that way and your family is being that way. One of the first things you said is you are a stroke survivor. That word means alot to all of us. Survivor. Our lives may have changed in ways we or our family and or friends don't like. But we are still here and still have purpose. Never give up on yourself and where your going to go. If your family makes you feel less than or worthless they aren't good family, support, nor energy to have around you. Like Elyse said take advantage of financial and mental resources that are available. Remember you didn't die. You survived. So live, smile, and keep fighting. Stay strong beautiful. 😁🌹

@adenthapa, I'm so sorry to hear about your stroke and especially having one so young. I'm really glad to hear that you're trying to reduce your habit of smoking, but I know it's really hard! I won't lie to you, it's definitely not good. Smoking not only damages your lungs but can cause increased blood pressure and damage to your blood vessels. These last two issues are what are particularly concerning for stroke risk. Keep on trying to reduce how many cigarettes you smoke and talk to your doctor to see if there's anything that can help you come off of them! ❤️ You got this

@sakshinemade, I'm so sorry to hear about your grandmother. I know that can be so scary. Her need to rest a lot is normal. If you've ever had an injury or been sick, you've likely been tired and wanted to rest, too. When a stroke happens, this is an injury to the brain. It takes a lot of energy to keep all the functions of the body working while also trying to repair the injury in the brain. So, let her sleep and rest. She needs it! ❤️ I hope this helps!
