If you experience anxiety when practising street photography, you are not alone. Feeling nervous in street photography is very common if not the usual for most of us. This isn't something you will overcome overnight, you can avoid it with longer focal lengths and a more architectural focus but if you want to take any photo in any location, learning to handle your anxiety and nerves will be very important. It doesn't matter whether you're using a Leica, a Sony, a Fujifilm, a Canon or an Olympus; this is a problem that applies to everyone. There's no quick fix for this problem, but I hope this video provides some assistance in learning to calm your anxiety on the street.

The biggest thing that helped me was realising sometimes I just don't have the energy for street photography. I felt bad about that at first but I'm an introvert and sometimes I'd rather walk in nature and take a nice landscape photo. Giving myself permission to enjoy other genres of photography was a big help.

We'll put Michael, letting your creativity rest and also appear in other areas is great for longevity. Not always beating the same drum and trying new things is really helpful
I agree about the headphones. Especially due to safety concerns in downtown areas.

Walking slow is my biggest struggle! I walk fast all day at work and its so hard to turn that off if im out on a street walk. Definitely need to pace myself better.

I get that! Especially the pressure of feeling like you don't have time to shoot, that often feels like an obstacle for me
This video was not only hilarious with the b-roll but the a-roll is very sobering, in a good way. My takeaway is to -get out of your head -get out into the world -realize this is a gift -you’re care more than anyone else does. People often times are inspired by photographers, and even if they’re not, it’s only an opinion

This helped me a lot. I didn’t know it was called the “spotlight effect” but now that I know what it’s called, I definitely struggle with that. And rushing. I want to practice street photography so so so much I just get so nervous.

Great tips here! I’m guilty of both rushing around , due to lack of time , and wearing ear buds all the time. I will try to take my time and get the buds out !! I’ve also got to be abit more confident walking around town with the camera. Not sure what my problem is there, naturally a pretty shy person I guess?

Really enjoying your content. Some great advice here especially the headphones. I always try to engage with the people who look at me strange when I get caught taking a shot. I try to make a joke and smile. Something like ` Damn that shot nearly made you famous then. Can I take another?' By engaging I find that any doubts they had melt away and they are then more than willing to allow a more focused shot to be taken. I have never had a real problem or been asked to delete anything with this approach. Well it works for me anyway. Happy shooting. 😀

Well listening to music while doing street photography can help but you are right sometimes it’s nice to be a part of the urban environment and listening to all the noise around You forget to talk about not caring so much about the Gear Many ones think that they need expensive camera with an expensive lens to do Street Photography Me my self I recently bought a Nikon D70S An OG One It will be nice if you can do a video about using old DSLR to do Street Photography
@GeorgeHolden

Yeah both can work, depending on how you're feeling! Definitely, I always use a variety of cheaper cameras as well as my pro bodies. Maybe I will, I have no plans to pick up another DSLR for now
@lourdesgyan

I use an "expensive" camera by my African standards. But I'm very curious to get older cheaper models to learn more of photography and especially street photography, which is significantly harder to accomplish in some regions of Africa (west Africa where I live) people are hostile to cameramen
Up your way in a few weeks doing some street photography

@@yumenolala interesting idea, I'll give it a think - I'll make it if I think I can provide something useful 😊
I'm absolutely not candid about my street photography. Just the contrary. I sit in my wheelchair, which already attracts attention. I have build up a 5x7" large format camera on a tripod beside me for street portraits, and in the bags on my wheelchair I have half a dozen medium format film cameras of different types and sizes and loaded with different films which I use depending on what I want to photograph. A digital camera is hanging from my neck and a TLR, which is my main street photography tool, lies on my lap. I obviously don't move around or roam the streets, everybody sees what I'm doing, and very, very rarely someone complaints. Just the contrary, again. More often than not I'm asked to take a picture of them. Lastly, I don't own any book about street photography, on purpose.

Any advice for a gal trying to get into street?😂 I’ve gotten some street shots here and there in the past 5 years and they are by far my favorites but I’ve always been with family/friends. Now I am seriously thinking of honing my skills on the street but it’s a bit daunting to go alone as an introvert. And I haven’t found many female street photographers on KZread documenting their experiences haha
@GeorgeHolden

I agree there's not a lot of female photographers sharing their street experience online, but there are some! Check out Paulie B's Walkie Talkie with Emily Howe, Melissa O'Shaughnessy and Poupay Jutharat - each of those videos are fantastic and show different women sharing their experiences!

Japan, photographing people is banned in common sense. They feel like it's violating their personal space. If someone sues you by that, it would be hard to get out from it. But unless you photograph a people's face, it is okay to photograph the 'street'(buildings, random structures, nature) mainly.

Cops won't arrest us by photographing in Korea or Japan. But if someone doesn't like it, we are in trouble
Fear ? It's not that. Simply it is forbidden to shoot random people in the streets. DSGVO killed candid street photography.
