Considering what chemicals were spilled, you won’t have to worry about them getting into the water or soil. These particular chemicals quickly evaporate into the air at anything warmer than -106 degrees Fahrenheit. The biggest issues will be in the air and, because they burned the chemicals, it could be widespread. At least the effects should be weaker than they would have been locally if they had left the spill alone (instead of people inhaling pvc, they’ll inhale chlorine gas).

Norfolk Southern train crash...5 train cars were carrying Vinyl Chloride, a colorless gas used in making plastic products that can cause dizziness, headaches and drowsiness when inhaled in the short term and a rare form of liver cancer after chronic exposure. Questions about DE-REGULATION to the railroad sector are becoming key to the investigation, and if de-regulation is a key factor, it becomes another example of 'profit before people, the environment, local agriculture, animal life, etc.'

When President Obama was in office, a Republican congressman wrote a bill that required trains to have pneumatic brakes and chemical warning and tracking systems on trains and the train cars carrying chemicals. It ws a good safety bill. So Democrats voted for it too. It passed the house and senate and President Obama signed it into law. As soon astrump became president, the republicans had full control of congress and trump in the White House and they did away with the law. Train companies didn't want to pay for the safety upgrades. Now Republicans are blaming the devastating event on President Obama. Their depraved, corrupt liars.

The toxic aftermath of the train derailment is horrifying and I wonder if Norfolk is offering so little for two reasons: To offer appropriately high dollar amounts is close to admitting responsibility. There may be conditions attached to accepting the $1000. The fine print might include language which prevents individuals from suing them because the corporation has to know that this is a crisis that will not go away anytime soon, possibly not in our lifetime. Those poor people will most likely suffer physical effects which range from immediately severe, to underlying, simmering debilitations for decades, along with chronically compromised lifelong autoimmune conditions. Norfolk is gaslighting the suffering residents in attempt to save massive amounts of money. Pretty much standard playbook for big corporations who hold out in taking responsibility for environmental disasters until they are finally forced to do so. Force them now. Don't wait.

This is an extremely dangerous situation with probably unimaginable long-term consequences for the environment and peoples' health...and what Norfolk Southern tried to offer as compensation...is absolutely abhorrent. Equally disgusting is the fact the authorities are telling people it's safe to breathe the air there DESPITE the health problems this is clearly causing (the nausea and such). This would be as if someone went down into the sewers of a place like, say, New York, and starting helping themselves to a raw sewage cocktail because the authorities told them the contents were safe to consume.

Age is not an issue for me since my grandfather turns 80 this year. He runs 2.5 miles a day and does puzzles all day. But, he's not. Watch Biden in interviews or press conferences. He's slow, inarticulate, often confused. He's a shadow of his former self. We need candidates that can reliably form coherent sentences, and find their way off stage. 80 is WAY too old to be president.

@ALICE PHILIPS Exactly. Finally one person in the comments who has a brain. I've been saying this, that the majority of the US would make fun of the most experienced heart surgeon and instead choose to go under the knife with a med student. That's how ridiculous it is to consider old age something to insult rather than something to admire. It isn't funny and isn't that edgy/offensive "funny" that people want it to be. It's just plain boring and nonsensical. We have someone who has made such excellent health choices that he's, at age 80, in better condition than most 30-year-olds in the US. And 80 isn't even that old these days. Must be jealousy, since most Americans would rather sit around binge-watching Netflix and eating Doritos than take care of themselves, and most are so self-absorbed and arrogant they insult every other human being in sight, while President Biden shows a Fred Rogers level of concern for every person he meets. I'm not fazed by celebrities, but I'd love to spend an afternoon with President Biden. It's the next best thing to spending an afternoon with Fred Rogers. They are both such caring and uplifting human beings! By the way, I have not forgotten how people made fun of Fred Rogers for his age, too, insulting his thoughtfulness before speaking, claiming his slow speaking style was a sign of dementia, until years later he died and suddenly they pretended they'd never talked about him that way and always admired him. Evidence of their regret for their words toward him. But they haven't learned from it.
