Thank you, Gavin! Can’t agree more. I just hate the fact that people who have a little experience taking an advantage on other people who eager to learn. I had a masterclass from a well known youtuber and it was a huge scam. The information given I realized later was all wrong!

Interesting topic. Cullen Kelly also got a "SHOWLUT DESIGN" class for 250 Dollars on "colour training" website. And an even more advanced "color science" course on TAC. But this is NOT for Beginners. But really good. I don't agree with "Lowepost" and "Mixing Lights". I am a member on both sites for more than 2 years. Mixing Light content is pretty "old" and the "talk" a lot but show very little. A lot of content is just "outdated" or they focus on masks or sharpening or "little things" but you will learn how to grade a whole TV series or movie. On "Lowepost" there is one or two good videos. How to grade a TV show like "suits". But this course now is only available on "Ravengrade". BUT: On Ravengrade they also do a lot of "name dropping". I can recommend the videos. Those are good. But not the "ravengrade" grading tool itself. So "professional sites" are often not really better. It depends. I think "tacresolvetraining" ---- Learn with the masters and all master classes with Walter Volpatto are amazing. You can also search for Walter Volpatto here on KZread and you will find some videos which are very similar to his masterclasses. So watch the free content first, and if you want to learn more... check out "TAC Resolve Training". Nico from "demystify-color" is also very technical but I can highley recommend his website. And search for "Color Management in DaVinci Resolve 17 with Alexis Van Hurkman" - A video for 80 DOllars... that teaches you everyhting on "Color Management". The fundamentals. Stay away from "Dado" and his "colour.training" website. I think this one is outdaded and he just pushing his tool (Look Designer) in those videos and he is talking for hours without teaching you much. Stay away from Qazi. You will only learn how to do it the wrong way. May advise: BUY the courses if you have the money. But don't expect much. Try to find free content first. Like "Walter Volpatto". I highly everything from Walter Volpatto and his classes on TAC / and on KZread. About money. I´ve spend 750 Dollars on "Dados Colour Training" website. Watched 20 hours and more. And i WOULD not recommend it. And there are coures on "ravengrade" for 80 Bucks. And those are basic, but good. /but only 10, 20% of the courses are good.) As I said. Don't expect too much. And expensive doesn't mean it is better. BUT: I don't think those courses are overpriced at all. every single one of them spend time into those courses and I con´t care if they cahrge 100 or 500 for a course. I think most color grading courses are pretty cheap if you compare if to "designer courses" or "writing courses" and so on. Those are often 700-1200 bucks. And "Color grading" courses are often just 100-200 bucks. Creating a good course is time consuming and not that easy.

Thanks for this Gavin Absolutely agree with your choices. I went down the M'class road initially and spent a long time unlearning bad habits. All those you mentioned are the best out there and should be compulsory viewing for everyone wanting to break into the Colouring world. 🙏 Thanks again for your content Gavin.

Love your stuff, do you think that there is room for more colourists in this world? I took 2 weeks off work to buy a course on colouring. What would you choose lowepost or mixing light? I defiantly need structure so a course is the way to go. Maybe it you were starting from day one again?

Darren is an actual working in the industry colorist, his tips are basic, sometimes a little more in depth, but well explained and very useful, not like those youtube hacks who aren’t actual colorists and just give you “tricks”. He explains over and over again who this masterclass is for these last few weeks. If you belong to this demography , I’m sure it will be an incredible masterclass. Darren is the real deal.

Rarely to see someone sayng what most pro colorists think about youtubers. Sad that a lot of people watch youtube and think they learn a lot, when its mostly entertaining and marketing of some "educational" product

It comes down to whether being a colorist is a viable and lucrative career or not. If it is, then it is worth buying a premium masterclass. If it isn't then it's not worth using free sources either, because you would still be wasting your time.

I have also transitioned from following youtubers as well in general. When I first started, I was looking at Qazi's stuff and his masterclass is the only one I've ever bought, but he isn't a "youtuber" he color grades for real, as a profession. Outside of him, I was tempted to engage with some others, then I got put on to Cullen Kelly and Darren Mostyn ( Just did an awesome video on the RGB Mixer), and decided from then on that if I was going to spend time, or money on someone's product it was going to be from someone who was a full time colorist with verifiable credentials who happens to put content on youtube. All of the sources listed here by Gavin are the people or companies I've ended up gravitating towards. If I could recommend one more group, it would be Raven Grade, Cullen Kelly is also associated with them as well. I would say their stuff is a little more for the intermediate to advanced. The interest in color grading has exploded over the last 3 years, please seek out the professionals who do this everyday and also happen to make content for us to consume. Some have youtube channels, most don't, they tend have their stuff behind a pay wall, but most of it is reasonably priced. If you feel like it's a worth while investment then go for it. If not, there is plenty of free stuff from legitimate professionals for you to consume and learn from.

  • @TechMediaLifr

@@YJKadventure heard a lot negative opinions about Qazi since I went to the resources mentioned by Gavin here. I'd rather stay with Darren and Cullen. Qazi to me sounds more like a good salesman then anything else. His videostyle also annoys me by now. I'm a bit allergic to it you could say. Finding Darren and Cullen much more pleasing to watch and learn from, way less hyping and more toned down.
