Don Rickles: The Donny & Marie Show ca. 1999

Комедия

#donrickles #donricklesinterview #donnyandmarie
Don Rickles at about 73-years old, makes an appearance on the Donny & Marie Show circa 1998/99. Rickles is in top-form leaving the two Osmond hosts & crowd in hysterics. Dick Clark, show producer, is also seen.
Donald Jay Rickles (May 8, 1926 - April 6, 2017) was an American stand-up comedian, actor, and author, known especially for his insult comedy. His film roles included Run Silent, Run Deep (1958) with Clark Gable and Kelly's Heroes (1970) with Clint Eastwood, and beginning in 1976 he enjoyed a two-year run starring in the NBC television sitcom C.P.O. Sharkey. A headline performer at Las Vegas hotel-casinos and peripheral member of the Rat Pack via friendship with Frank Sinatra, Rickles received widespread exposure as a frequent guest on talk and variety shows, including The Dean Martin Show, The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson and Late Show with David Letterman, and later voicing Mr. Potato Head in the Toy Story franchise. He won a Primetime Emmy Award for the 2007 documentary Mr. Warmth: The Don Rickles Project.
Donny & Marie is an American talk show hosted by Donny and Marie Osmond, that aired in syndication from September 1998 to May 2000 and was produced by Dick Clark.
Donald Clark Osmond (born December 9, 1957) is an American singer, dancer, actor, and former teen idol. Osmond first gained fame performing with four of his elder brothers as the Osmonds, earning several top ten hits and gold albums. Then, in the early 1970s, Osmond began a solo career, earning several additional top ten hits, including "Go Away Little Girl," (U.S. #1) "Puppy Love," (U.S. #3) and later, "Soldier of Love" (U.S. #2). He also recorded the popular song "I'll Make a Man Out of You" for the 1998 Disney film Mulan. He also gained fame due to the success of the 1976-79 self-titled variety series, and due to a string of gold records.
Olive Marie Osmond (born October 13, 1959) is an American singer, actress, author, philanthropist, talk show host, and a member of the show business family the Osmonds. Although she was never part of her family's singing group, she gained success as a solo country music artist in the 1970s and 1980s. Her best known song is a remake of the country pop ballad "Paper Roses". From 1976 to 1979, she and her singer brother Donny Osmond hosted the television variety show Donny & Marie.

This must have been the second episode of Donnie and Marie that Don Rickles appeared on. The first episode Don was involved with was recorded in LA in July 1997 (I was in the audience of that episode). In the 1997 recording, before Don Rickles came on, Dick Clark very politely spoke to the audience like we were friends. He informed us that Don Rickles was doing him a "favour" because they were down a guest and they needed someone to fill the space. That was the very first season of The Donny and Marie show. Perhaps a guest had second thoughts and pulled out? Whatever happened, Don Rickles did Dick Clark a favour by coming on the show. Looks like Don helped him out again. As an Australian, I wasn't too familiar with either Dick Clark or Don Rickles, but I was very impressed by their genuine bond, friendliness and professionalism.

My dad, who is no longer with us God test his soul, used to say Donny is prettier than Marie, but not in a bitter way, that was just my dad. My family lived in Utah for about 4 years because he was a civilian employee for the US Air Force and got transferred to Hill Field in Utah near Clearfield, where I graduated from high school. Then we moved to California. We were Irish Catholics from New York and Utah was a big culture shock for us. One time I was in a school bus at the end of school day waiting to go home and the bus driver struck up a conversation with me because he new I was a new kid. He said oh you’re from NY, the man who started our religion, Joseph Smith, was from NY and I understand they have a yearly statewide celebration there in honor of his life. I looked at him and said who’s Joseph Smith?
